Der umstrittene Vortrag von Francesca Albanese, UN-Sonderberichterstatterin für die palästinensischen Gebiete, an der Freien Universität Berlin (FU) darf nicht in Präsenz stattfinden. Das hat FU-Präsident Günter M. Ziegler am Mittwochnachmittag im Akademischen Senat angekündigt. Stattdessen darf die Veranstaltung digital stattfinden.

Eine Gruppe von Professor:innen hatte Albanese für kommenden Mittwoch zu einem Vortrag an der Uni eingeladen. Daran gab es von Politikern und Verbänden heftige Kritik.

Die FU zog nun die Reißleine. Uni-Präsident Ziegler verwies im Akademischen Senat auf die „umfassende Kontroverse“ im Vorfeld, weshalb der Vortrag nicht im geplanten Format stattfinden könne. Stattdessen sollen die Organisatoren eine wissenschaftliche Veranstaltung mit Albanese „im digitalen Raum“ machen dürfen. Der Grund dafür sei, dass man die Sicherheit aller nicht mehr garantieren könne.

„Es besteht die akute Gefahr, dass es angesichts der aufgeheizten Stimmung zu der Veranstaltung selbst gar nicht mehr kommt, sondern stattdessen einen großen Konflikt in den Saal trägt“, sagte Ziegler. Die Veranstaltung sei zudem von verschiedenen Aktivisten-Gruppen beworben wurden. Gemeint ist damit wohl auch die „Student Coalition“, die diverse pro-palästinensische Aktionen in Berlin organisiert. Bislang kam es dort immer wieder zu israelfeindlichen und antisemitischen Vorfällen. (...)

Luisa Morgantini, journalist for Il Sole 24ore Roberto Bongiorni and renowned Italian activist, was released by Israeli police thanks to the intervention of the Italian embassy in Tel Aviv and the consulate in Jerusalem. Morgantini, 84, was arrested on Thursday in Tuba (south of Hebron) because she allegedly entered a “military zone”. Morgantini, a member of the small leftist Communist Refoundation party, is a prominent member of the Italian peace movement and one of the founders of the Italian branch of the Women in Black anti-war organisation.

Prime Minister Starmer’s lapidary statement re the Gaza genocide is problematic in at least two respects:

1. it gives the impression that what happened on Oct7 may remotely justify the military course that has ensued (which it does not, in any possible way);

2. it casts a shadow on the ongoing work of the ICJ (South Africa v Israel; Nicaragua v Germany) - after the World Court recognised the plausible risk of genocide within 15 days from the starting of the proceedings (clearly the rapidity of the first response underscores the seriousness of the case).

I trust UK international law scholars and practitioners will make their voice heard, and stand firmly against the politicization of int’l law.

Because of their history, one might have thought Germans & Italians would be at the forefront of the opposition to the Netanyahu-driven assault on Gaza, which is now metastasising across the region.

Our collective obliviousness to what led, 100 years ago, to the Third Reich’s expansionism and the genocide of people not in conformity with the “pure race” is asinine. And it is leading to the commission of yet another genocide, yet another regional war and potentially yet another global one.

Shame on all those who are making it happen.

States should not forget, among others, the ICJ’s warning in Nicaragua v Germany, last April. May their responsibilities be investigated, including in the respective domestic courts.
