Vu que je ne passe plus trop par ici (sauf quand on me ping !), je ne sais pas si vous avez suivi aussi dans la rubrique musiconécrologique, la mort de Syl Johnson, de Robbie Shakespeare, de Alemayehu Eshete ?

J’ai suivi ça sur PAM, FIP, etc, mais on n’a pas fait de seen avec de la musique pour l’occasion. :(

Il y a un documentaire sur sa vie, assez émouvant qui raconte pourquoi elle a choisit d’arrêter la musique et la vie publique. Je vous le conseille.

Alemayehu Eshete, c’est mon préféré parmi les Ethiopiques, le plus funky (Ethiopiques n°9). J’ai eu la chance de le voir en concert lors de ses passages en France, souvent sur scène avec Mahmoud Ahmed, un peu plus connu que lui (par son tube Ere Mela Mela)

A peine 2 minutes d’images du fameux concert du Castellet (le son des deux dernières chansons n’est pas d’origine puisqu’elles n’ont même pas été chantées au Castellet. Pour la première, Steppin In Her I. Miller Shoes, c’est bien la version live, plus rapide que la version studio, qu’on entend), c’est tout ce qu’on a gardé de ses prestations pourtant furieuses... :

Betty Davis was a musical maverick with vision. Image, substance, sex, and grit combined with a badass band that could deliver the funk bed backbone to the sultry music between the sheets. After cutting two notorious discs for the Just Sunshine label (Betty Davis and They Say I’m Different), and Nasty Gal for Island Records, Davis went to work on her most personal and expressive record yet. After capturing 10 hard-hitting tracks in 1976 at the remote Studio In The Country (Louisiana), a creative difference with her then label caused the platter to be unexpectedly shelved. Davis would cut one final album and soon retreat from the music business, completely disappearing from the public eye.

Is It Love Or Desire is a little-known gem in the Davis catalog. Mastered from the original tapes, and untouched for over 30 years, this release features detailed liner notes, the originally intended artwork housed in a lavishly packaged digipak, rare photos, archival material, and recent interviews with Davis and her skin-tight band Funk House.

Never bootlegged, never released, never heard until now, the secret story of this lost album will finally enter the history books and cement this bold soul sisters contributions to music and popular culture. Its time to get down…

Très bien le #documentaire, merci @supergeante ! Contrairement à @sinehebdo, j’ai l’impression d’avoir compris grâce à ce #film pour quelles raisons elle s’est retirée de la scène : le combo des oppressions machistes, racistes, et du pouvoir des producteurs. Elle ainsi que ses ami·es disent que tout le monde voulait la forcer à se conformer à une image, une musique, une vie qui n’était pas la sienne, et que son corbeau—métaphore un peu sombre(?) de sa créativité—a fini un jour par… se barrer.
