The Forever Pollution Project - Tracking PFAS across Europe

In 2023, the Forever Pollution Project, a pioneering cross-border and interdisciplinary collaboration, brought together journalists and experts to reveal and map, for the first time, the extent of PFAS contamination across Europe.

In January 2025, the Forever Lobbying Project exposes the lobbying and disinformation campaign orchestrated by the chemical and plastic lobbies to prevent the ban of these “forever chemicals” in the European Union. Fighting to keep their “chemical business as usual” with misleading, scaremongering arguments, polluting industries are shifting the burden of environmental contamination onto society, threatening the economic stability of European nations.

Working with 18 experts, the project calculated the cost of decontaminating Europe if nothing is done to combat PFAS emissions: the figure is more than €100 billion per year – and a staggering €2 trillion over twenty years.

The Forever Pollution Map was created by Le Monde and its 17 partners from the cross-border investigation, the Forever Pollution Project. It is the first map to show the extent of Europe’s contamination by per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), a family of ultra-toxic compounds used for a multitude of products and applications. Persistent in the environment, these “forever chemicals” will accompany humanity for hundreds of years – maybe even thousands.

In early February 2023, the European Chemicals Agency ECHA published a ban proposal on all PFAS – or per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances. In an unprecedented experiment of “expert-reviewed journalism”, involving 29 journalists and seven scientific advisers, the Forever Pollution Project revealed that there is way more contamination all over Europe than has been publicly known. The journalists gathered 100 datasets and filed dozens of FOI requests to build a first-of-its-kind public interest tool in the form of a free, online, interactive map of PFAS contamination in Europe. The scientific methodology behind this data collection was borrowed from the PFAS Project Lab and the PFAS Sites and Community Resources Map in the US.
