« Cette contribution est une exploration des représentations visuelles produites par une Allemagne nazifiée qui « exploitait » la puissance de ce mécanisme de communication. Ces figures associaient propagande militaire, sociale et culturelle par le biais de visuels inventifs et effrayants, qui travestissaient la réalité en profondeur et au profit de la propagande nazie. L’auteur nous présente ici une sélection de ces images, essentiellement parues dans le magazine Signal entre 1940 et 1944, et nous invite à rester vigilant·es face à ces illustrations au design spectaculaires, dont l’objectif était de véhiculer les idéaux fascistes dans une Europe largement dominée par l’Allemagne. »

Between 1901 and 1915, the Ministry of Trade and Commerce published five annual reports on the state of industrial education nationwide. The maps in the report covering the years 1902–1905, published in 1906, and in the subsequent reports published in 1909 and 1912, were drawn by the Ministerial Advisor for Industrial Affairs, Director General, later City Clerk of Budapest, and incidentally an amateur literary critic, Andor Gyula Zulawski (1867–1936). As a literary critic Zulawski was a conservative-nationalist, he accused the poet Endre Ady of spreading moral Bolshevism and blamed Mihály Babits’s poems for the Treaty of Trianon.

This selection consists of data graphics, infographics, and maps that are unique, but I couldn’t write not even a short post about them. When I found them, I put them in a separate folder, thinking they might come in handy someday. My grandfather also collected every piece of scrap metal, piece of leather, tiny button, and paintbrush bristle in his drawer, thinking they might come useful for patching a hole in a bucket or repairing the speaker of his Soviet-made Sokol radio for the tenth time.

Of course, these graphics and drawings are not junk, they just have no match. Like the porcelain green angel inherited from the granny.

Two of the twenty-two map appendices in Pál Balogh’s book A népfajok Magyarországon (The Ethnic Species of Hungary), published in 19021, which runs to more than one thousand and thirteen pages, are remarkable for the way they present the ethnicities and religions of Hungary (Figs 1ab & 2). The graphic method used to produce them is variously known as as equal square/area grid map, or tilegram, or mosaic map, and it has been suggested that they may be the first examples of maps employing this method2. The two maps, designed by Pál Balogh and drawn by Sándor Kocsárd Proff are well known in Hungarian map history, especially within ethnic cartography.3 Balogh’s work is also a frequently cited source in the Hungarian historical demographic literature. But the now popular method of the maps4 or ‘anamorphic cartograms’5 is worth a closer look.
