    Israeli occupation forces set off a massive underground explosion beneath the UNESCO-listed Shaqif Fortress (Beaufort Castle) in the Arnoun area of southern Lebanon overnight Thursday into Friday, using an estimated 700 tons of explosives, according to a joint statement by the Israeli prime minister’s office and the Ministry of War.

    The blast was powerful enough to be heard across much of southern Lebanon, with reports of the explosion being heard as far as Saida and Iqlim al-Kharroub in Mount Lebanon’s Chouf region. In Nabatieh, residents reported dust raining down over the area in the aftermath of the explosions in Arnoun.

      Israeli occupation forces carried out unprecedented bombardment in southern Lebanon at midnight on Thursday, triggering a series of powerful explosions that reverberated across the area, Al-Manar correspondent reported.

      The strikes targeted the Shaqif area, where massive explosions were reported, with their sound heard across wide parts of the south, our correspondent in Nabatieh region Ali Shbib said.

      “The intensity of the blasts caused homes to shake and sparked state of fear among residents,” the reporter added, noting that massive clouds of smoke and dust engulfed the targeted area, with the debris-filled air reaching villages across southern Lebanon.

      National News Agency (NNA), meanwhile, reported that the blasts resonated throughout the south, with shockwaves felt as far as Iqlim Al-Kharroub (north of Sidon) and Khalde (south of the capital, Beirut).

      Local residents described intense shockwaves that rock the area, accompanied by a heavy smell of gunpowder, according to NNA.

      For their part, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Israel Katz claimed that occupation forces had blown up a “tunnel system” allegedly used by the Hezbollah resistance group in southern Lebanon.

      In a joint statement, Netanyahu and Katz said: “Around 700 tons of explosives were used in the operation.”
