As a behavioral scientist, Nicholas Epley is a bold explorer. For years he has plumbed the murky river of misunderstanding that runs between people. “There’s more blackness in the mind of another person than we think there is,” Epley says. In his 2014 book Mindwise, Epley demonstrates why our window into others is limited. “You can’t overcome your own experiences, beliefs, attitudes, emotions, knowledge, and visual perspective to recognize that others may view the world differently,” Epley writes in a Mindwise chapter, featured in Nautilus. I caught up with the outgoing Epley in his office at the University of Chicago, where he is the John Templeton Keller Professor of Behavioral Science.
