Memories On Stone

Hussein et Alan, deux amis d’enfance kurdes décident de tourner un film qui retracerait le génocide perpétré par Saddam Hussein et ses troupes dans les années 80 où près de 200’000 Kurdes furent massacrés. Mais tourner dans l’Irak de l’après-guerre ne s’avère pas une chose si facile. La plus grosse difficulté arrive lorsqu’il s’agit de trouver la femme qui devrait jouer le rôle principal. Toutes celles pressenties se désistent l’une après l’autre. Alors qu’Hussein voit le projet capoter pour cette seule raison, une jeune femme apparaît et se propose. Sinur correspond tout-à-fait à ce qu’ils espéraient, il reste maintenant un dernier obstacle à franchir : obtenir l’accord de sa famille, c’est-à-dire celui de son oncle Hamid et de son cousin Hiwar qui en est follement amoureux et voudrait l’épouser. Etrangement, Sinur, elle, est prête à tout pour jouer ce rôle. Cependant, les problèmes ne s’arrêtent pas là pour nos deux amis, l’argent vient à manquer, mais ils sont prêts pour pouvoir finir le tournage. Le dernier jour du tournage, un coup de feu se fait entendre, Hussein s’écroule sans connaissance. Le film pourra-t-il enfin être vu sur un écran ?

The Narrow Frame of Midnight

A young orphan, Aïcha, is found alone in the forests of central Morocco. Taken and sold from her home in the hills of the Atlas mountains, Aïcha finds herself at the mercy of Abbas, a petty criminal, and his conflicted girlfriend, Nadia. They soon cross paths with Zacaria, a Moroccan/Iraqi writer, who has left everything behind- including a passionate relationship with a teacher, Judith- to follow in the path of and search for his missing brother. The group embarks on a journey that will lead them from Morocco, to Istanbul, across the plains of Kurdistan to Iraq and beyond.

The Narrow Frame of Midnight charts the journeys of several characters as they struggle to find their place in the world; in search of the living and of the dead, of others and of themselves. The paths of these characters intersect at different points in the film and though their destinies eventually diverge, they are connected in profound ways. The arc of each respective journey reflects and informs the circuit of the other journeys. Three of the characters (Aïcha, Zacaria and Judith) are people who are searching; they are explorers who at different points decide to take the leap and embark on a voyage whose end is unknown. The Greeks believed, as writer Jeanette Winterson reminds us, that the hidden life demands invisible ink. And so in a way, the characters with whom we travel in The Narrow Frame of Midnight are people who have decided to discern the hidden story within themselves and to continue to write it at any cost.

Queens of Syria

Queens of Syria tells the story of fifty women from Syria, all forced into exile in Jordan, who came together in Autumn 2013 to create and perform their own version of the Trojan Women, the timeless Ancient Greek tragedy all about the plight of women in war.

What followed was an extraordinary moment of cross-cultural contact across millennia, in which women born in 20th century Syria found a blazingly vivid mirror of their own experiences in the stories of a queen, princesses and ordinary women like them, uprooted, enslaved,and bereaved by the Trojan War.

Thanks to all the women who took part in this project and made this film possible.
