The Role of Maps: Maps are pieces of material culture. (Remember the relationship between Ideas, Norms, and Material that we studied in class.) What are the symbolic ideas that influence the concept of a border on a political map? How do these concepts affect the lives of migrants, like Bouchra Khalili? In your opinion, are these concepts valid today? Do maps empower humanity and cultural freedom? Or are the concepts embedded in cartographic images restrictive?
