The continued collapse of The Baltic Dry Index remains ignored by most – besides we still have Netflix, right? But, as Dollar Vigilante’s Jeff Berwick details, it appears the worldwide ‘real’ economy has ground to a halt!!

Last week, I received news from a contact who is friends with one of the biggest billionaire shipping families in the world. He told me they had no ships at sea right now, because operating them meant running at a loss.

This weekend, reports are circulating saying much the same thing: The North Atlantic has little or no cargo ships traveling in its waters. Instead, they are anchored. Unmoving. Empty.

You can see one such report here. According to it,

Commerce between Europe and North America has literally come to a halt. For the first time in known history, not one cargo ship is in-transit in the North Atlantic between Europe and North America. All of them (hundreds) are either anchored offshore or in-port. NOTHING is moving.

This has never happened before. It is a horrific economic sign; proof that commerce is literally stopped.

Today, Thursday, February 04 2016, the Baltic Dry Index decreased by 5 points, reaching 298 points.

Baltic Dry Index is compiled by the London-based Baltic Exchange and covers prices for transported cargo such as coal, grain and iron ore. The index is based on a daily survey of agents all over the world. Baltic Dry hit a temporary peak on May 20, 2008, when the index hit 11,793. The lowest level ever reached was on Thursday, February 04 2016, when the index dropped to 298 points.

Ah oui, j’avais vu passer ça. Non pas l’effondrement du BADI, mais l’arrêt absolu du transport maritime. C’est bidon ! Et pourtant, le truc a fait un buzz d’enfer.

En fait, y a un gugusse qui a pris la vue mondiale du suivi de trafic (aussi bien sur Vessel Finder que Marine Traffic) et qui n’a rien vu sur les océans, oubliant que le système AIS ne fonctionne qu’en vue directe des côtes (35 à 50 km maxi de portée).

Ceci dit le fret maritime ne va pas bien, comme l’indique l’indice du vrac.

Et ce n’est pas faute d’utiliser tous les artifices possibles : ainsi, la vitesse moyenne des bateaux marchands a perdu plus d’un nœud par rapport à l’année dernière, ce qui a de nombreux effets positifs, baisse des consommations de fioul et donc réduction des émissions, mais aussi réduction automatique de la capacité disponible (pas loin de 10%)

Un démenti du 12/01/16, « l’info » avait été mise en circulation le 8, l’article de Zero Hedge qui a vraiment lancé le buzz est du 16.
