Green energy is Scotland’s leading source of power - The Scotsman

Green energy has overtaken nuclear for the first time to become Scotland’s number one source of power, according to new UK government figures.
Climate campaigners yesterday welcomed the figures, saying they mark a “crucial tipping point” and signal the “beginning of the end” for fossil fuels and nuclear power.
The latest energy trends report from the Department of Energy & Climate Change (DECC) shows renewables generated 32 per cent more electricity than any other single source of power in Scotland in the first half of this year.
The sector – including solar, wind, hydro and biomass energy sources – produced a record 10.3 terawatt-hours of power. This compares to 7.8TWh from nuclear, 5.6TWh from coal and 1.4TWh from gas-fired power stations in the same period. Nuclear was previously the nation’s primary source of electricity.

WWF Scotland director Lang Banks said: “Last month, while nuclear reactors were forced to shut because of cracks, Scotland’s renewables were quietly and cleanly helping keep the lights on in homes across the country.
Coming soon to Scottish skies? The ‘UFO’ wind farms

The BAT – Buoyant Airborne Turbine – is designed to harness energy from stronger winds and produce more power than traditional turbines.
Four prototypes have been developed and the first commercial product will be tested by American green energy firm Altaeros Energies in Alaska next year.
The round helium-filled devices have been designed to float in the air and channel wind through the turbine and could generate electricity at a much lower cost for customers.
Scottish independence within SNP’s grasp - poll

The largest swing towards a Yes vote recorded so far in the campaign is revealed today in an ICM survey for Scotland on Sunday, which has found that support for independence has grown from 32 per cent to 37 per cent since September.
The surge in those backing Yes was accompanied by a corresponding drop in No support by five percentage points from 49 per cent in September to 44 per cent currently.
Scotland’s Labour traditions are the real battleground for the yes vote
▻http://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2014/jan/23/scotland-labour-traditions-yes-vote-independence
This week’s Scottish Social Attitudes survey shows a strong correlation between support for independence and social class. Some 40% of households earning under £14,300 are likely to vote yes, while wealthy Scots are resolutely hostile, and 72% of business leaders are hostile to independence. Contrary to the views of many Labour supporters and liberals, the referendum is not about blood and soil separatism. It reflects longstanding societal divisions about the British state’s direction.

Independence is not merely reducible to working class desperation. It also reflects broad progressive values. Compared with the Scottish average, yes supporters are much more likely to favour spending on people with disabilities, on pensioners, and on the unemployed. They back taxation for redistribution, and other long-forgotten “Old Labour” principles, like universalism. And while the new wave of English nationalism, in all its varieties, seeks to win poor voters by blaming immigrants and Europe, Yes Scotland and SNP rhetoric has been free of bigotry and prejudice. Only 20% of Scots wish to leave the EU.
Le prix de la nature en Ecosse : £23 milliards par an

A PROJECT to put a price tag on Scotland’s air, water and geology has been launched as a means of saving the country’s natural assets.
First Minister Alex Salmond gave his support to the scheme at an international conference on environmental accounting in Edinburgh yesterday.
Nearly 500 people from 35 countries are attending the UN-backed World Forum on Natural Capital to debate whether putting a cash value on nature’s assets will make companies and governments more likely to protect them. [...]
#Nature is estimated to bring in up to £23 billion a year to the Scottish economy and its worth to society is enormous, according to Simon Milne, chief executive of the Scottish Wildlife Trust, the conference organiser and forum co-founder.
“Without a better appreciation of this value, we cannot properly track the damage that we are doing to our natural assets, nor can we properly incorporate this value into decision-making,” he said.
“The Scottish Forum will use the understanding we are developing to inform how we go about protecting and improving Scotland’s natural capital.
Row over ‘#Go_Home’ messages for asylum seekers
The #UK government has been accused of running an “insidious, cynical and racist” poster campaign in its Glasgow immigration office in an attempt to encourage refugees and asylum seekers to go home.

Mapping Immigration Controversy
A research project mapping the unfolding controversy of Home Office immigration campaigns
What have we found so far?
How are the messages of government campaigns understood by residents in targeted areas?
We found a range of responses, from people who had uncertain migrant status, who were settled migrants with legal right to remain, who were ethnic minority and white British citizens. All of the responses were emotionally charged, most notably with anger and fear – both from people who were angered and scared by the Home Office campaigns, and people who were worried about migration. Some people who had not heard about the publicity before we asked their opinions found it unbelievable that it was a government campaign – several thought the ‘Go Home’ van had been produced by groups such as the English Defence League or the UK Independence Party, and noted how the language echoed slogans of violent racists in the 1970s. In Scotland, we frequently heard the Home Office tactics being rejected as a Westminster imposition, not suited to Scotland, and used to support arguments for Scottish independence. The vast majority of people we spoke to in the focus groups thought that the Home Office publicity was a political stunt rather than an effective policy – whatever their political stance on immigration.

THOUSANDS of American school pupils are to be taught that the Loch Ness monster is real – in an attempt by religious teachers to disprove Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution.
Pupils attending privately-run Christian schools in the southern state of Louisiana will learn from textbooks next year, which claim Scotland’s most famous mythological beast is a living creature.
