“Germany and the United States supply 99% of the weapons exported to Israel,” Ben Saul, the UN special rapporteur on the observance of human rights in the fight against terrorism, said on Wednesday in Geneva. “They could end this conflict overnight by stopping the weapons that kill Palestinians.”
Palantir CEO Makes Shocking Confession on Disrupting Democratic Power
▻https://www.yahoo.com/news/articles/palantir-ceo-makes-shocking-confession-160030835.html
Palantir CEO Alex Karp thinks his AI technology will lessen the power of “highly educated, often female voters, who vote mostly Democrat” while increasing the power of working-class men.
“This technology disrupts humanities-trained—largely Democratic—voters, and makes their economic power less. And increases the economic power of vocationally trained, working-class, often male, working-class voters,” Karp said in a CNBC interview Thursday. “And so these disruptions are gonna disrupt every aspect of our society. And to make this work, we have to come to an agreement of what it is we’re going to do with the technology; how are we gonna explain to people who are likely gonna have less good, and less interesting jobs.”
Trump Gets His Own Father’s Birthplace Wrong in Rambling White House Exchange
▻https://www.yahoo.com/news/articles/trump-gets-own-father-birthplace-190603660.html
As reporters began shouting more questions, Trump launched into a falsehood-riddled rant that included the false claim that his own father was born in Germany:
[…] My father was born–. (GESTURES TO GERMAN CHANCELLOR) He knows all about my father. My father was born there.
So, you know, there are places that you sort of automatically very, very feel warmly about. […]
President Trump’s father Fred Trump was born in the Bronx in New York City, a fact that seems to come and go from Trump’s knowledge base. He made the Germany claim during the same 2019 photo op where he repeatedly referenced the “oranges” of the Mueller investigation.
Trump also made the claim in a CBS News interview in 2018 and in a 2020 Fox News interview. But other times, he has made the more accurate claim that his father’s parents were from Germany, as he did just a few months ago.
Apparemment, Trump ne fait même plus rire les nostalgiques des confédérés.

President Donald Trump’s jokes at an elite closed-door Washington, D.C., event bombed so badly that “the room fell silent repeatedly,” The Washington Post reported Sunday.
The awkwardness happened Saturday night at the Alfalfa Club dinner, an invitation-only event for some 200 of the rich and powerful who gather together each year on Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee’s birthday.
Trump administration says sign language services ’intrude’ on Trump’s ability to control his image
▻https://www.yahoo.com/news/articles/trump-administration-says-sign-language-165203170.html
The Trump administration is arguing that requiring real-time American Sign Language interpretation of events like White House press briefings “would severely intrude on the President’s prerogative to control the image he presents to the public," part of a lawsuit seeking to require the White House to provide the services.
Department of Justice attorneys haven’t elaborated on how doing so might hamper the portrayal President Donald Trump seeks to present to the public. But overturning policies encompassing diversity, equity and inclusion have become a hallmark of his second administration, starting with his very first week back in the White House.
The National Association for the Deaf sued the Trump administration in May, arguing that the cessation of American Sign Language interpretation — which the Biden administration had used regularly — represented “denying hundreds of thousands of deaf Americans meaningful access to the White House’s real-time communications on various issues of national and international import.” The group also sued during Trump’s first administration, seeking ASL interpretation for briefings related to the COVID-19 pandemic.
In a June court filing opposing the association’s request for a preliminary injunction, reported Thursday by Politico, attorneys for the Justice Department argued that being required to provide sign language interpretation for news conferences “would severely intrude on the President’s prerogative to control the image he presents to the public,” also writing that the president has “the prerogative to shape his Administration’s image and messaging as he sees fit.”
Government attorneys also argued that it provides the hard of hearing or Deaf community with other ways to access the president’s statements, like online transcripts of events, or closed captioning. The administration has also argued that it would be difficult to wrangle such services in the event that Trump spontaneously took questions from the press, rather than at a formal briefing.
Trump Wanders Through Comical Riff on Walking Down Stairs During Scattershot Speech
▻https://www.yahoo.com/news/articles/trump-wanders-comical-riff-walking-150244907.html
PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP: America is respected again as a country. We were not respected with [Joe] Biden. They looked at him falling downstairs every day. Every day, the guy’s falling downstairs.
Said, it’s not our president. We can’t have it.
I’m very careful, you know, when I walk downstairs, like I’m on stairs, like these stairs, they’re very… I walk very slowly.
Nobody has to set a record. Just try not to fall. Because it doesn’t work out well.
A few of our presidents have fallen and it became a part of their legacy. We don’t want that.
You have to walk nice and easy. You’re not having, you don’t have to set any record.
Be cool. Be cool when you walk down, but don’t, don’t bop down the stairs.
It’s the one thing with Obama, I had zero respect for him as a president, but he would bop down those stairs. I’ve never seen, da-da, da, da. Pop, pop, pop.
He’d go down the stairs, wouldn’t hold on. I said, “it’s great. I don’t want to do it.”
I guess I could do it, but eventually bad things are gonna happen. And it only takes once.
But he did a lousy job as president. A year ago, we were a dead country. We were dead. This country was going to hell.
An increasingly popular conspiracy theory falsely centers around the existence of “med beds,” a fabled medical instrument that does everything from reversing aging to regrowing missing limbs. The theory has grown in popularity among followers of far-right movements like QAnon, some of whom claim to be urgently awaiting a med bed to treat severe health conditions.

Korean women target US military in landmark forced prostitution lawsuit
▻https://www.yahoo.com/news/articles/south-korean-women-sue-us-062831445.html
More than 100 South Korean women forced to work as prostitutes for US soldiers stationed in the country have filed a landmark lawsuit accusing Washington of abuse, their lawyers said Tuesday.
Historians and activists say tens of thousands of South Korean women worked for state-sanctioned brothels from the 1950s to 1980s, serving US troops stationed in country to protect the South from North Korea.
In 2022, South Korea’s top court ruled that the government had illegally “established, managed and operated” such brothels for the US military, ordering it to pay around 120 plaintiffs compensation.
Last week, 117 victims filed a fresh lawsuit, this time officially accusing — and seeking an apology from — the US military, for the first time.
The lawsuit seeks 10 million won ($7,200) in compensation per victim.
Unlike the better-known “comfort women” used by Japanese soldiers until the end of World War II, those who worked for the US troops have received relatively limited attention, largely due to Washington being Seoul’s key and longtime security ally.
The economy surrounding military brothels in US base towns, including restaurants, barbershops and bars catering to American GIs, made up about 25 percent of South Korea’s GDP during the 1960s and 70s, according to historians.
“I still cannot forget being beaten by US soldiers — slapped for lowering my head while pouring drinks, for not smiling, or for no reason at all,” one of the plaintiffs, in her 60s and who did not wish to give her name, said in a statement sent to AFP.
She said she was only 17 when she was tricked into the job — she thought she was going to be a bartender, but was forced into sex work and told she could not leave due to her “debt”.
’I couldn’t walk’
“Every night we were dragged to US soldiers and sexually abused. Every week we were forced to undergo venereal disease tests. If there was the slightest abnormality, we were locked in a small room and injected with a thick needle of strong penicillin,” she said.
“The shots were so harsh that my legs gave out and I couldn’t even walk.”
In a joint statement, women’s rights activists supporting the victims said the US military “ignored the South Korean Constitution” and stripped the women of their personal freedom and “destroyed their lives”.
The suit names the South Korean government as the defendant, since under existing laws Seoul must compensate victims of illegal acts committed by US soldiers on duty and later seek reimbursement from Washington, lawyers said.
“This lawsuit seeks to hold both the South Korean government and the US military authorities jointly liable for the unlawful acts,” lawyer Ha Ju-hee told AFP.
The US still stations around 28,500 troops in South Korea to help protect it against nuclear-armed North Korea.
The United States Forces Korea (USFK) told AFP it was “aware of the reports regarding the issue”, adding “we will not comment while legal proceedings are ongoing”.
“We affirm that we do not condone any behavior that violates Republic of Korea laws, rules, or directives, and we remain committed to maintaining the highest standards of good order and discipline.” the USFK said.
In a First, Korean Women Target U.S. Military in Suit Over Prostitution - The New York Times

In 2022, the women won a court ruling against their own government. South Korea’s Supreme Court ordered the government to compensate dozens of women for the trauma they endured as “comfort women for the U.S. military,” as they were once known. The court found the government guilty of encouraging prostitution for American G.I.s to help bring in badly needed U.S. dollars for the economy and maintain ties with the United States, on which it relied for security.

Israel Craters Runway To Keep Turkey From Taking Over Syrian Airfield

The Israeli Air Force carried out more strikes on Syrian air bases on Wednesday, including on an airfield in central Syria that Turkey may take over. The attacks will make it harder for Ankara to deliver troops, air defenses and other equipment and to operate the facilities in general, should it attempt to do so.

At Pentagon, Elon Musk Is Preparing to Access Department Systems
source:
Members of billionaire Elon Musk’s so-called government efficiency team have arrived at the Pentagon amid unprecedented incursions at other agencies across the federal government, but on Wednesday had yet to access the military’s vast systems and data.
A defense official who was granted anonymity to speak candidly on the matter said that members of the Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE, were conducting onboarding procedures like getting IT access set up this week. Musk’s team of young aides with tech backgrounds has already accessed federal databases holding the sensitive information of millions of Americans, slashed agencies without Congress’ consent, and triggered at least 11 lawsuits.
[…]
It is not clear what systems or databases the DOGE team will be granted access to as part of its work. At other agencies, the Trump administration has been secretive about what type of access Musk and his team were given, and the president brushed aside concerns over conflicts of interest for Musk, whose companies have billions of dollars in contracts with the federal government, including the Defense Department.
The DoD, with its roughly $850 billion budget, is the largest federal agency and holds much of the U.S.’ most sensitive national defense information. It also includes more than 2 million service members, as well as facilities and programs at bases across the country and overseas that support them and their families.
As the team was getting ready to get started, The Washington Post reported Wednesday that Hegseth also ordered the Pentagon to develop plans for cutting 8% from the defense budget every year for the next five years.

Syrian rebels enter northern city of Manbij, Turkish source says
▻https://www.yahoo.com/news/syrian-rebels-enter-northern-city-112314123.html

Turkey-backed Syrian rebels entered the northern Syrian city of Manbij after taking control of most of the surrounding area from U.S.-allied Kurdish forces there, a Turkish security source said on Sunday.
Syrian rebels in the south declared President Bashar al-Assad’s ouster on Sunday after seizing control of Damascus. The Turkey-backed rebels in the north are aligned with the rebels in the south, sharing the same goal of defeating Assad.
“The fight against the YPG/PKK is very close to victory. Both air and land interventions are ongoing to take Manbij from the hands of the YPG/PKK,” the source said, referring to the Kurdish militia which has long been in control of Manbij.
The source said the Turkish-backed forces controlled 80% of the Manbij region, an area covering some several hundred square kilometres, and had entered the city itself.
However, the U.S.-backed Syrian Kurdish forces, who control northeast Syria and have been the target of several Turkish incursions in the past, said they were still fighting the Turkish-backed rebels in the city.
Manbij city is some 30 km (19 miles) south of the Turkish border and to the west of the Euphrates river.
The Turkey-backed Syrian rebels earlier said they had started an attack on Manbij.
The YPG has been a central element of U.S.-allied forces in a coalition against Islamic State militants. Turkey says the YPG is a terrorist group, closely tied to Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) militants who have fought the Turkish state for 40 years.
Renowned academic Noam Chomsky told The Wall Street Journal that his meetings with Jeffrey Epstein are “none of your business”
The Wall Street Journal, in an exclusive published Sunday, said it had obtained Epstein’s private calendar, which outlined numerous meetings with high-profile people, including Chomsky, the famed academic and political activist. When the Journal reached out to Chomsky for comment, the linguist had some choice words.
[...]
Epstein’s meetings with Chomsky appear to have taken place in 2015 and 2016, according to the Journal. Epstein was first charged with procuring minors for prostitution and registered as a sex offender in 2008.
In March 2015, Epstein scheduled meetings with Chomsky and a Harvard University professor, the Journal reported. Chomsky confirmed for the paper that there were several meetings where they discussed various topics.
The Journal reported that months later, according to the calendar, Epstein scheduled a flight with Chomsky and his wife for a planned dinner with movie director Woody Allen and his wife, Soon-Yi Previn, who is also the adopted daughter of his ex-partner, Mia Farrow.
“If there was a flight, which I doubt, it would have been from Boston to New York, 30 minutes,” Chomsky told the Journal. “I’m unaware of the principle that requires that I inform you about an evening spent with a great artist.”
[...]
“What was known about Jeffrey Epstein was that he had been convicted of a crime and had served his sentence,” Chomsky told the Journal about his meetings. “According to U.S. laws and norms, that yields a clean slate.”

5-year drought raises questions over Israel’s water strategy
▻https://www.yahoo.com/news/5-drought-raises-questions-over-062408778.html
It’s a confounding situation for a country that places itself on the forefront of desalination technology in an arid region, where water is a key geostrategic issue that has its own clauses in peace agreements.
“Nobody expected five years of drought in a row, so despite our desalination capacity, it’s still a very, very grave situation,” said Yuval Steinitz, Israel’s minister of energy.
Some say Israel’s technological prowess may not be enough to overcome the forces of nature.
Situated in the heart of the Middle East, #Israel is in one of the driest regions on earth, traditionally relying on a short rainy season each winter to replenish its limited supplies.
Years of decreased rainfall have reduced the Sea of Galilee, Israel’s main natural water source, to some of its lowest recorded levels, and Israel has stopped pumping water from it to its national system.
The current drought has also dried out some tributaries that feed into the Jordan River, which flows south into the Sea of Galilee then squiggles 220 miles (360 kilometers) to the lowest place on Earth, the Dead Sea.
