Alternatives to Europe: Syrian Refugees in Brazil
As of May 2016 more than 4.8 million Syrians have been displaced from their country and are searching for safety in neighbouring countries and beyond. In 2015 more than one million refugees and other mixed migrants entered Europe by land and sea, the vast majority of whom were Syrian. The dangerous nature of the Eastern Mediterranean route (the route most frequented by Syrians), with its tumultuous conditions and often unreliable boats and smugglers, resulted in the reported deaths of 806 people in 2015 and 376 thus far in 2016. Despite these numbers, and the surrounding media and public interest, European countries are not the only destination for Syrian refugees leaving the Middle East.
