Refugee deaths in the Mediterranean: An imperialist crime
    20 April 2016

The deaths of hundreds of refugees in the Mediterranean on Monday is not only a tragedy, it is a crime. Those responsible are the governments in Washington, Berlin, Athens, Rome and other European capitals, as well as the European Union Commission in Brussels.

They bear the guilt for these tragic deaths in two regards. The decades of imperialist oppression of the Middle East and Africa and the wars in Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya and Syria have created the conditions in which millions of people would rather risk their lives by fleeing than face the constant danger of death and ever-present reality of bitter poverty at home. And the sealing of Europe’s borders, together with naval patrols in the Mediterranean, force refugees to take ever more dangerous routes.

The brutal murder of Italian student Giulio Regeni in Cairo has resulted in an open diplomatic crisis between Egypt and Italy.

On April 8, the government in Rome recalled its ambassador to Egypt. Prime Minister Matteo Renzi said that Italy had a duty to Regeni’s family “but also to the dignity of us all” to bring the “genuine truth” to light.

Italian student and journalist Giulio Regeni was tortured to death in Egypt in January in a bestial manner. On January 25, the fifth anniversary of the Egyptian revolution, he disappeared without a trace close to Tahrir Square. Then on February 3, his horrifically disfigured body was found in a ditch by a highway.

Demolition: Take an investment banker apart, and what do you find?
    By Carlos Delgado

Directed by Jean-Marc Vallée; screenplay by Bryan Sipe

Demolition is the new film from Canadian-born director Jean-Marc Vallée (Dallas Buyers Club, Wild). The film tells the story of Davis Mitchell (Jake Gyllenhaal), a New York investment banker working for a $6 billion firm who experiences an emotional unraveling after his wife dies in an automobile accident. While the film purports to give us an unvarnished look at the inner life of its protagonist, in truth Demolition is little more than a pastiche of clichés and easy outs, many of which serve to reinforce some of the most pernicious myths about American life.

US-Russia tensions flare in Baltic Sea

The Pentagon announced Saturday that it was filing a formal complaint with the Russian Defense Ministry and US Secretary of State John Kerry threatened retaliatory action after two incidents involving US and Russian forces in the Baltic Sea.

The Pentagon alleged that a Russian SU-27 fighter jet flew within 50 feet of a US reconnaissance plane in international airspace on April 14, and that a Russian jet and helicopter “buzzed” the Navy destroyer USS Donald Cook as it was conducting military exercises with Poland in the Baltic two days earlier.

Life expectancy gap between US rich and poor widens
    By Jerry White
    12 April 2016

A study published Monday in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) provides more evidence that life expectancy in the United States is chiefly determined by economic class. Higher income is the most critical factor in longevity, the study found, with the gap between the richest one percent and poorest one percent of individuals averaging 14.6 years for men and 10.1 years for women.

The study was based on income data derived from 1.4 billion tax records between 1999 and 2014 of individuals aged 40 to 76, and death records obtained from the Social Security Administration. It found that men in the top one percent had an expected age of death of 87.3, compared to 72.7 years for the poorest one percent. The richest women on average lived 88.9 years, while the poorest lived only 78.8 years.

Nepal tries to balance between India and China
    By W.A. Sunil
    12 April 2016

Two trips by Nepalese Prime Minister K. P. Sharma Oli—the first to India in February and the second to China late last month—highlight the increasingly precarious balancing act facing the country. New Delhi, backed by Washington, is seeking to ensure its dominant position in landlocked Nepal, as part of US efforts to undermine China in every corner of Asia.

Oli’s visit to India sought to bring an end to the five-month trade blockade, including of fuel supplies, mounted by the United Democratic Madhesi Front (UDMF) in the southern Terai region of Nepal. India denied allegations it was behind the UDMF’s disruption of supplies, but called on the Nepalese government to make constitutional amendments to address the “legitimate aspirations” of all sections of the population, including ethnic Madhesi.
