Greece: «As a doctor, I feel outraged»

Everything has now changed on the Greek island of Lesbos which last year saw well over half a million refugees and migrants take their first steps on European soil. During the chaos of last summer, 15,000 people were stranded on the island after the authorities stopped running ferries to the mainland. Now everything is clean and tidy, ready for the upcoming tourist season. The camps set up by volunteers and NGOs to provide temporary shelter to families arriving on the island are completely empty.

Asylum Applicants No Longer Detained in Registration Centers on Greek Islands

As of Monday, the “administrative restriction” process for asylum applicants on Lesvos and Chios is in effect, meaning that they cannot be detained in registration centers after 25 days.

The migrants are gradually free to leave the hotspots since their asylum applications take longer than 25 days to process.

The migrants released from the registration centers are given a specific document that says their asylum application is in process and they cannot leave the island until there is a decision on their case.

Open Hotspots Again

On April 20, more than 160 asylum seekers and migrants reached Lesbos and Chios from Turkey. The police detained them in the closed facilities on those islands, Moria and VIAL, as they do everyone who has arrived on the islands since the ill-conceived EU-Turkey deal came into force a month ago.

Security concerns flare up over Greek asylum centers

The European Asylum Support Office, which coordinates EU efforts to help Greece with the processing of asylum requests, said “a number of security measures have been taken while other measures are ongoing,” according to a letter the agency’s executive director, José Carreira, sent the Belgian government Friday, a copy of which was obtained by POLITICO.

Una notte nella prigione per profughi di Lesbo

Due livelli di recinzione con filo spinato. Le tende dell’UNHCR e gli “shelter” – i prefabbricati da trenta metri quadrati dove dormono fino a dieci persone alla volta. Le telecamere che sorvegliano l’hotspot e, di notte, fari e fasci di luce puntati verso la collina. E ancora: la coda per la mensa fatta di centinaia di corpi per ottenere una scodella in plastica di “Potatoes&Maccheroni” – che è anche il ritornello di una filastrocca sarcastica inventata dai migranti. La intonano polemicamente a orario pasti, contro la monotonia di questo regime alimentare. In realtà le patate non ci sono e i maccheroni sono delle mezze penne coperte da pomodorini, capperi, olive e un blocco di feta dal sapore nauseante.
