Lawful Interception is carried out within a clearly defined legal regime of checks and balances, targeting specific individuals and letting all other information go.
Massive Interception is carried out by storing all messages going through the communications infrastructure, providing “Global search and surveillance of all internet traffic”, and gives a “global synthesised view”. Amesys’ Eagle system gives you both options. This presentation from the French company Amesys illustrates and acknowledges two narratives that many technologies share in this sector: what is legal and what is technically possible.

95% of the world’s communications flow through undersea fibre-optic cables. Glimmerglass provides the technology to intercept those cables at the ’submarine cable landing station’, allowing a nation state full access to the information flowing in and out of its borders.
Glimerglass’ Intelligent Optical Systems are advertised on the basis that they can allow for interception of optical signals to take place without disrupting network traffic. In other words: this system can operate without cable operators knowing, from the monitoring of their own network, that interception is taking place.
