Concentrated world population : World population is estimated to be 6.9 billion people (2011), and while that is a lot of people, it suddenly doesn’t seem like that much in these maps of Per Square Mile. Simply imagine that the world lived with the same density of a real city, and see how much area they take up.

Ce billet a un an déjà, mais il est très intéressant, spécialement si on le met en rapport avec un texte d’Elisée Reclus qui s’appelle « À propos d’une carte statistique » qui semble dater de 1889 ou 1890. Elisée Reclus présente une carte dessinée par son complice Charles Perron qui représente l’humanité si « elle était rassemblée au même endroit comme dans une fête électorale... »

La carte est titrée « Espace où se tiendrait le genre humain, à 4 habitants au mètre carré » et représente en gros Paris et sa proche banlieue... On est à la fin du XIXe siècle et la planète rassemble environ 1,5 milliard de personnes.

Fox News tried to show the change in the top tax rate if the Bush tax cuts expire, so they showed the rate now and what’d it be in 2013. Wow, it’ll be around five times higher. Wait. No.

The value axis starts at 34 percent instead of zero, which you don’t do with bar charts, because length is the visual cue. That is to say, when you look at this chart, you compare how high each bar is. Fox News might as well have started the vertical axis at 34.9 percent. That would’ve been more dramatic.

Carnegie Mellon statistics professor Cosma Shalizi considers the differences and similarities between statistics and data science.

If people want to call those who do such jobs “data scientists” rather than “statisticians” because it sounds more dignified, or gets them more money, or makes them easier to hire, then more power to them. If they want to avoid the suggestion that you need a statistics degree to do this work, they have a point but it seems a clumsy way to make it. If, however, the name “statistician” is avoided because that connotes not a powerful discipline which transforms profound ideas about learning from experience into practical tools, but rather, a meaningless conglomeration of rituals better conducted with twenty-sided dice, then we as a profession have failed ourselves and, more importantly, the public, and the blame lies with us. Since what we have to offer is really quite wonderful, we should not let that happen.

Some time during the past couple of years, statistics became data science’s older, more boring sibling that always plays by the rules. There are a lot of statisticians who now call themselves data scientists. I still call myself a statistician.

If you had, say, five bits of information, would you say I only have five data? If you really, truly believe that data is a plural noun, you’d have no problem with this. But does anyone actually do it?

t’s a given that some colleges and programs give more A’s than others, but according to data collected by Stuart Rojstaczer from about 230 schools, it seems that average GPAs have been increasing overall.

In the 1930s, the average GPA at American colleges and universities was about 2.35, a number that corresponds with data compiled by W. Perry in 1943. By the 1950s, the average GPA was about 2.52. GPAs took off in the 1960s with grades at private schools rising faster than public schools, lulled in the 1970s, and began to rise again in the 1980s at a rate of about 0.10 to 0.15 increase in GPA per decade. The grade inflation that began in the 1980s has yet to end.

This bump and difference in GPA carries with it implications:

These trends may help explain why private school students are disproportionately represented in Ph.D. study in science and engineering and why they tend to dominate admission into the most prestigious professional schools.
