Yes, We Were Warned About Ebola

Part of the problem is that none of these articles were co-written by a Liberian scientist. The investigators collected their samples, returned home and published the startling results in European medical journals. Few Liberians were then trained in laboratory or epidemiological methods. Even today, downloading one of the papers would cost a physician here $45, about half a week’s salary.

Pour informer sur l’#Afrique ne faites pas comme “60 Minutes” (pétition)
We, the undersigned, are writing to express our grave concern about the frequent and recurring misrepresentation of the African continent by “60 Minutes.”
In a series of recent segments from the continent, “60 Minutes” has managed, quite extraordinarily, to render people of black African ancestry voiceless and all but invisible.
Two of these segments were remarkably similar in their basic subject matter, featuring white people who have made it their mission to rescue African wildlife. In one case these were lions, and in another, apes. People of black African descent make no substantial appearance in either of these reports, and no sense whatsoever is given of the countries visited, South Africa and Gabon.
The third notable recent segment was a visit by your correspondent Lara Logan to Liberia to cover the #Ebola epidemic in that country. In that broadcast, Africans were reduced to the role of silent victims. They constituted what might be called a scenery of misery: people whose thoughts, experiences and actions were treated as if totally without interest. Liberians were shown within easy speaking range of Logan, including some Liberians whom she spoke about, and yet not a single Liberian was quoted in any capacity.
Liberians not only died from Ebola; many of them contributed bravely to the fight against the disease, including doctors, nurses and other caregivers, some of whom gave their lives in this effort. Despite this, the only people heard from on the air were white foreigners who had gone to Liberia to contribute to the fight against the disease.

Ebola: Critical analysis of the global response one year into the deadliest outbreak in history - Médecins Sans Frontières Australia (Doctors Without Borders) - International Medical Humanitarian Aid

Médecins Sans Frontières today released a critical analysis of the Ebola epidemic in west Africa over the past year, revealing the shortcomings of the global response to the crisis and warning that the outbreak, despite an overall decline in cases, is not yet over.
The report, Pushed to the Limit and Beyond, is based on interviews with dozens of Médecins Sans Frontières staff involved in the organisation’s Ebola intervention. (...)
“Today we share our initial reflections and take a critical look at both Médecins Sans Frontières’ response and the wider global response to the deadliest Ebola outbreak in history,” said Dr Joanne Liu, Médecins Sans Frontières International President. “The Ebola epidemic proved to be an exceptional event that exposed the reality of how inefficient and slow health and aid systems are to respond to emergencies.”

Bill Gates: The Ebola Crisis Was Terrible. But Next Time Could Be Much Worse. - NYTimes.com
▻http://www.nytimes.com/2015/03/18/opinion/bill-gates-the-ebola-crisis-was-terrible-but-next-time-could-be-much-worse.
The Ebola epidemic might have been a lot worse if the United States, Britain and other governments had not used military resources to fly people and equipment into and out of affected areas. But we should not assume that the next epidemic will limit itself to countries that welcome Western troops.
#Data is another crucial problem. During the #Ebola epidemic, the database that tracks cases has not always been accurate. (...)
Then there’s our failure to invest in effective medical tools like diagnostic tests, drugs and vaccines. (...)
Compare all this to the preparation that nations put into defense. Armies have systems for recruiting, training and equipping soldiers. NATO has a mobile unit that is ready to deploy quickly. Although the system isn’t perfect, NATO members do joint exercises where they work out logistics like how troops will get food and what language they will use to communicate.

The #model may have been wrong, but it doubtless put the British in a suitable frame of mind. No doubt we will hear more now-it-can-be-told stories when Ebola is (for now) stamped out. But the real scare stories will stay with the NGOs, health agencies, and senior bureaucrats, to be shared late at night after enough drinks, and very rarely shared at all with spouses.
Care Differs for American and African With Ebola - NYTimes.com
▻http://www.nytimes.com/2015/03/17/world/africa/hospital-says-american-clinician-being-treated-for-ebola-is-worsening.html
Before falling ill, both the American and Usman, an employee of the Sierra Leone government, worked at an Ebola treatment unit supported by Partners in Health. The group has distinguished itself by promoting the principle articulated by its co-founder Dr. Paul Farmer that people in poor countries deserve the same high standard of medical care as those in wealthy nations.
The paths taken by the Americans and their Sierra Leonean colleague have raised questions about whether the charity has been acting in concert with its stated values.
“This person’s life is less than the American’s?” asked Dr. Kwan Kew Lai, a doctor who helped care for the ailing health officer at an International Medical Corps treatment unit in the Port Loko district of Sierra Leone. Dr. Lai said there was little to offer him other than encouragement, intravenous fluids and morphine.
“There’s a dilemma that Partners in Health is facing, or all of us need to look at,” she said. “I don’t think it’s right.”

Good Fences Aren’t Enough

#Ebola crisis: the unequal impact on women and children’s health - The Lancet Global Health
▻http://www.thelancet.com/journals/langlo/article/PIIS2214-109X(15)70009-4/fulltext?rss=yes
There seems to be no biological sex difference regarding vulnerability to Ebola virus disease,1 yet many sociocultural and health-care-related factors increase the risks for women in the Ebola outbreak in west Africa.
First, the worsening of suboptimal access to reproductive and maternal health care in the Ebola crisis countries is posing a major threat to the lives of mothers and infants.2 Second, women are the primary caregivers in their homes, communities, and health facilities and, as such, assist most infected individuals, which puts them at an increased risk of contracting the virus. Moreover, traditional burial practices, typically performed by women, can also place them at higher risk.3 Finally, there is evidence of sexual transmission of Ebola after individuals recover from the infection.4 Since women have little control over sexual behaviour including abstinence or protected sex, this represents an additional source of increased exposure to the virus.
