A group of Activision Blizzard employees calling itself the ABK Workers Alliance has rejected the company’s decision to employ the law firm WilmerHale to conduct a review of the company’s policies and procedures. In a letter shared with IGN, the group told CEO Bobby Kotick that his delayed response to employees following a lawsuit alleging widespread sexual harassment and discrimination at the company “did not meaningfully address” employee demands, and that WinterHale’s pre-existing relationship with Activision creates a conflict of interest that means it cannot conduct an impartial review.

The Georgia War, Ten Years On

The year 2018 marks the 10th anniversary of the so-called “#five-day_war” or “#August_war”, namely the conflict between Georgia, Russia and the Russian-backed, self-proclaimed republics of South Ossetia and Abkhazia. According to Ghia Nodia, the August war was a “moment of truth” for Georgia and for the region, but even for the broader international system’s equilibrium. As such, the conflict’s consequences stretched far beyond the geographic boundaries of the actors involved, having a huge impact on the whole post-Soviet region, the European Union and on warfare in general, as it marked the first use of cyber attacks in support of kinetic operations. This dossier collects a number of different views on the conflict’s consequences on Georgian politics and the region generally. On the one hand, the dossier analyses the implications of the conflict for EU foreign policy and Russia-EU relations. On the other, it also takes stock of Georgia’s political changes and, particularly, its process of integration with the EU and NATO.

The United States condemned on Wednesday the Syrian regime for recognizing two breakaway regions in Georgia and establishing diplomatic ties with them.

“The United States strongly condemns the Syrian regime’s intention to establish diplomatic relations with the Russian-occupied Georgian regions of #Abkhazia and #South_Ossetia,” US State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert said in a statement.

It added that it fully backed Georgia’s independence and reiterating its call for Russia to withdraw from the area.

“_These regions are part of Georgia. The United States’ position on Abkhazia and South Ossetia is unwavering,” the statement said.

On Tuesday [29/05/18], Georgia said it would sever diplomatic relations with Syria after Damascus moved to recognize the two regions as independent states.

“With this act the Assad regime declared its support for Russia’s military aggression against Georgia, the illegal occupation of Abkhazia and (South Ossetia) regions and the ethnic cleansing that has been taking place for years,” Georgia said.

Russia, Nicaragua, Venezuela and Nauru previously recognized the independence of Abkhazia and South Ossetia, both of which broke away from Georgia following the collapse of the Soviet Union.

Alors qu’elle est étudiante à l’Université des Sciences Appliquées et des Arts de Hanovre, en Allemagne, Ksenia Kuleshova décide de travailler sur l’Abkhazie. Coincé entre la Russie et la Géorgie, au bord de la mer Noire, ce territoire hérite d’un statut disputé et n’est reconnu que par quelques États. « Les gens y vivent un peu comme dans une bulle parce que leur pays n’est pas reconnu. Ils essayent d’exister dans l’incertitude », raconte la photographe dont le travail Abkhazia est toujours en cours. « L’Abkhazie ne fait pas l’objet d’un traitement médiatique. C’est comme un endroit perdu sur la carte du monde. » Son projet est l’un des huit gagnants du concours Tokyo International Photography et fera l’objet d’une exposition en 2018 à New York, Sydney et Tokyo.

In the Soviet period Abkhazia, a balmy region on the Black Sea coast and popular summer destination among the USSR’s elites, enjoyed autonomous status within the Georgian republic. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, ethnic Abkhaz with some Russian support fought a brutal war against the Georgian government in 1992-93. The catastrophe left more than 250,000 Georgians (who had constituted a majority in the region) homeless. In August 2008, Russia recognised the territory as independent – the overwhelming majority of states consider it part of Georgia.

This fascinating realization came to him in 2005, when he learned about “#unrecognized_countries” while studying at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. At the time, he was just becoming interested in photography as well, so he applied to graduate school at Syracuse University with the express intention of visiting unrecognized countries for a long-term documentary photography project. It was a big stretch, given his limited knowledge of either subject.

“This is the first thing I ever worked on; the first photographic idea I ever had,” he said. “I had a point-and-shoot digital camera, and I didn’t know what aperture meant. I didn’t know an f-stop from a stop sign.”

He soon learned. Financing his project with student loans and a grant from the Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting, he embarked on his research in earnest. He set some very strict standards for the places he wanted to visit: that it maintain its borders and have a working government that seeks — but does not receive — international recognition.

Le 9 septembre au matin, alors qu’il sortait de son garage pour se rendre comme d’habitude au travail, Dmitri Vichernev a été assassiné à Soukoumi, Abkhazie, d’une balle dans la tête. Son épouse Olga, qui se trouvait également dans la voiture, a été grièvement blessée. Survenu le jour même du cinquième anniversaire de l’établissement des relations diplomatiques entre l’Abkhazie et la Russie, l’événement a aussitôt été qualifié par les officiels de l’ambassade de Russie d’« acte terroriste ». Avec un peu plus de recul, l’ambassadeur russe en Abkhazie Sergue Grigoriev affirma ensuite qu’il serait « prématuré de spéculer sur les théories ».
