Neptune Frost – Official Trailer
▻https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=acfBNIXovww
Co-directed with the Rwandan-born artist and cinematographer Anisia Uzeyman, the film takes place in the hilltops of Burundi, where a group of escaped coltan miners form an anti-colonialist computer hacker collective. From their camp in an otherworldly e-waste dump, they attempt a takeover of the authoritarian regime exploiting the region’s natural resources – and its people. When an intersex runaway and an escaped coltan miner find each other through cosmic forces, their connection sparks glitches within the greater divine circuitry. Set between states of being – past and present, dream and waking life, colonized and free, male and female, memory and prescience – Neptune Frost is an invigorating and empowering direct download to the cerebral cortex and a call to reclaim technology for progressive political ends.

▻https://pan-african-music.com/gystere-strange-breathin

▻https://pan-african-music.com/le-vol-du-boli

Williams conceived MartyrLoserKing’s title character, a cyber hacker living in the East African country of Burundi who builds a Frankenstein’s Monster-like super-computer from the parts of abandoned desktops, teaches himself how to code and develops an online cult following. He’s in love with a transgender woman named Neptune Frost and hosts a cryptic and anarchist podcast, through which his eventual hacks into Google and the Pentagon turn him into Public Enemy No. 1, a kind of militant Edward Snowden.
“Poets are midwives of reality.” ~ John Keats
Not long ago, I began writing and recording MartyrLoserKing- the screen-name of a hacker, living in Burundi, who rises in virtual fame and escapes authorites who assume that someone in a more popular location must simply be throwing their signal.
I was inspired by current events and reailties playing out in real time, from the Arab Spring to the Occupy movement, the actions of players like Chelsea Manning and Edward Snowden, the suicide of Aaron Swartz, and the proliferation of new technology: cameras, phones, tracking devices, drones and the growing sense of the unexpected, the flashmob, the protester in the face of an increasingly militarized world, and decidedly rooted the story in a world I was growing more and more familiar with through my personal life, living in Paris, and it’s proximity to Africa.
I chose Burundi for the setting because of the role that Bujumbura played in the imagination of previous generations of the Great Lakes regions, as a destination for music, good times, a way of life, as a place to dream of and look forward to, like others might dream of Paris. Simultaneously, I learned of the role of Burundian drums in the sound of New Wave, of far off England. When I finally wrote the first song for the album, I never imagined that its release would coincide with actual unrest and protests in the area. Nor did I imagine the wave of protests that would arise in America in response to the unwarranted killings of youth, blacks, poor and the disenfranchised.
As it stands, I am on the cusp of releasing an album that feels completely aligned with a fight against religious extremes, dictatorships, poverty/wealth discrepancy, biased gender and marriage views set into law, and the continued oblivious nature of the wealthy and privileged whose comfort comes at the heavily exploited expense of natural resources and unseen/uheard people.
The middle finger is for the corporate, religious, and government pushback against the democratic progression of humanity; for the naysayers that force a new generation to face the same discrimination as their parents and grand-parents, for the continual and heartless push of the 1% and their minions. Needless to say, I’m fed up.

How women in pop are carrying the mantle of Afrofuturism
Maps & Legends
When my brother and I were young, our parents would build us igloo forts out of blue sheets in the living room before putting us to bed. They would turn off all the lights except for a string of white Christmas lights that looped through our plants, and turn on the jazz-fusion, African-rhythm synthpop of Afro-Parisian Wally Badarou, creating an icy new world for us. What I now recognize as a way to calm two small children before bedtime felt like magic to me then. Our living room was transformed into a timeless space that felt simultaneously prehistoric and futuristic.Grace Jones’s “Slave to the Rhythm” was in heavy rotation in our household. I remember poring over the cover art—her fierce eyes; her avant-garde high-top fade; her open, extended mouth like a chomping cyborg or an insect mandible; and her glossy brown skin. All this, paired with her booming and distorted voice over African percussion and synth, made her a mesmerizing figure to my 7-year-old ears and eyes. I had never heard music or a voice like hers, and although I didn’t completely understand her or the world she was creating with her music, she would go on to influence my ideas of womanhood, blackness, and the performative nature of identity.
#Toronto’s Afrofuture
▻http://africasacountry.com/torontos-afrofuture
Toronto’s downtown core feels like a city of the near-future these days. There’s the condo boom that, as someone said to me recently, makes TO feel like Gotham City on a sunny day; more and more surfaces are being used as a canvas for the bright barrage of shiny advertising, like a futuristic cautionary tale about corporatism and consumption; and there’s buildings you’ve long suspected are alien spaceships in disguise. Point is, Toronto lends itself to sci-fi imaginings, so it’s not surprising when Danilo the Artist says that he thinks Toronto could be a capital of #Afrofuturism.

James Brown - Escape-ism / Ray Bradbury
Way in the Middle of the Air (1950).

– Il faut que je voie ça. J’arrive pas à y croire. Et où vont-ils ? En Afrique ?
Silence.
– Sur Mars. »
