Le docteur Tamsir Mbowe, ancien ministre de la Santé, était un témoin très attendu devant la Commission vérité, réconciliation et réparations, en Gambie. Il a été directeur du programme de traitement du VIH/sida de l’ancien président Yahya Jammeh. Un traitement considéré comme un canular meurtrier par tous les autres témoins. #Sida, un héritage de l’époque coloniale

Des scientifiques mènent une enquête au coeur de l’#Afrique, à la recherche des origines du VIH. Un documentaire captivant, diffusé à l’occasion de la Journée mondiale de lutte contre le sida, le 1er décembre.

Il est l’un des plus grands tueurs de la planète. Avec plus de 36 millions de morts et près de 37 millions de personnes infectées, le sida constitue à ce jour la pandémie la plus destructrice de l’histoire contemporaine. Afin de mieux la connaître, une équipe de scientifiques part sur les traces de son origine, au cœur de l’Afrique, dans l’ancien Congo belge. En parvenant à mettre la main sur d’anciens prélèvements humains contenant le virus, ils arrivent à la conclusion que la première transmission du sida – du chimpanzé à l’homme – se situe autour de l’an 1908, des décennies avant les premiers cas connus.

Catastrophe en germe
Les chercheurs ne s’arrêtent pas là. Ils se plongent dans l’histoire coloniale du Congo pour comprendre comment le VIH a pu se propager. Au début du XXe siècle, soucieuses de ne pas perdre la main-d’oeuvre indigène qu’elles exploitent, les autorités coloniales lancent des campagnes massives de vaccination contre la maladie du sommeil, où l’on a souvent recours à des seringues mal stérilisées. De même, la syphilis, qui se répand alors, augmente considérablement les risques de transmission du sida entre les hommes. Parallèlement, le chemin de fer se développe dans le pays car Kinshasa est une plaque tournante de l’industrie minière. Le virus devient mouvant. Lors de l’indépendance du Congo, en 1960, la pandémie couve. Dans les années 1970, les ravages successifs de la guerre civile, puis les errements du régime prédateur de Mobutu, qui ruine l’économie, créent les conditions chaotiques d’une propagation fulgurante du virus...
Carl Gierstorfer signe un documentaire passionnant, où l’enquête scientifique se mêle à des images d’archives, parfois dures, témoignant de la cruauté et des ravages de la colonisation. Il rappelle également qu’à l’heure où les maladies infectieuses se développent dans le monde entier, les conditions d’une nouvelle pandémie sont peut-être à nouveau réunies.

En un été, un récit presque oublié devient légende. 120 Battements par minute, de Robin Campillo, a été à la fin de l’été 2017 un choc mémoriel pour des anciens d’Act Up-Paris en même temps que pour des jeunes qui découvraient la lutte contre le sida. Son récit a été produit vingt-cinq après par des militants de l’#Act_Up-Paris du tout début des années 1990, s’instituant ainsi « appeleurs de mémoire ». Confrontant notre expérience du film avec celle singulière d’un de ses auteurs, nous avons souhaité interroger la façon dont s’éclairent mutuellement mémoires individuelles et intentions d’écriture. Il y est question de cette écriture vingt-cinq ans après d’un scénario, mais aussi, de l’élaboration d’un récit qui commence sans doute avec Act Up-Paris le 9 juin 1989.

Yes, the Fight for Anti-HIV Drugs is a Fight against #Discrimination

The rate of of HIV infections in the UK is rising among gay and bisexual men. In 2014, in the UK, 2800 gay men contracted HIV (approximately eight men per day). Despite the change in the law in 2013 to allow gay marriage, there is still a lot of homophobia. For example, some media coverage of the UK High Court decision in National Aids Trust v NHS England trial, portrayed homosexuals as being irresponsible in opting for expensive drugs that absolve them from blame while transferring the cost to the public health system. In this piece, originally published in The Conversation, Sharifah Sekalala reflects on the significance of the recent UK High Court decision and discusses why the fight for anti-HIV drugs is a fight against discrimination.

Un enfant ou adolescent de moins de 15 ans sur quatre seulement ont accès à un traitement antirétroviral vital. Les décès diminuent dans tous les groupes d’âge à l’exception de celui des 10-19 ans.

Les nouvelles infections à VIH ne diminuent pas aussi rapidement chez les adolescents que dans les autres groupes d’âge. Les adolescentes sont les plus touchées, en particulier en Afrique subsaharienne. En Afrique du Sud, plus de 860 filles ont été contaminées par le VIH chaque semaine en 2013, contre 170 garçons

The Genealogy of a Gene: Patents, HIV/AIDS, and Race, Bosch Public Policy Lecture

In this lecture, Myles Jackson will explain how he has used the CCR5 gene as a heuristic tool to probe three critical developments in biotechnology from 1990 to 2010: gene patenting, HIV/AIDS diagnostics and therapeutics, and race and genomics. Taking an interdisciplinary approach, Jackson ties together intellectual property, the sociology of race, and molecular biology by showing how certain patent regimes have rewarded different forms of intellectual property. The decision to patent genes was not inevitable, Jackson argues, nor “natural.” Likewise, there is nothing inevitable about using race as a major category of human classification. Jackson explains the economic and political interests that rationalized those choices — and explains the alternatives. He attempts to resurrect the past in order to illustrate the alternative paths not taken and explain why they were never chosen.

Walt Odets is a clinical psychologist in Berkeley, Calif., who knew Mr. Cox and has written extensively about the aftereffects of H.I.V. on long-term survivors. Dr. Odets is reluctant to use terms like “post-traumatic stress disorder” and “pill fatigue” to describe what happened to the veterans of Act Up, but he said it was clear the epidemic did not end for them when therapeutic drugs came along.

“It was an extraordinary trauma comparable to a wartime experience,” Dr. Odets said. “For many gay men, after the epidemic was over, there was a loss of energy and vitality. It’s like going from a car that runs on rocket fuel to one that runs on gasoline. And it had to be bewildering for Spencer.”

Les ennuis ont commencé en juin 2011, malgré la mobilisation des associations, mais aussi de chercheurs, médecins, certains organismes officiels (Conseil national du sida, Conférence nationale de santé, etc.), la loi Besson (Eric Besson était alors ministre de l’Immigration et de l’identité nationale) est adoptée. Elle va considérablement vider de sa substance le droit au séjour des étrangers malades. "Il n’est désormais plus question de savoir si le traitement est « accessible » dans le pays d’origine : il suffit que le traitement « existe » quelque part dans ce pays pour permettre l’expulsion.

Deux hypothèses devaient s’affronter :

celle, américaine, du CDC d’Atlanta qui considérait – comme presque tout le monde – que le sida était principalement un problème d’homosexuels ;

celle des équipes françaises, néerlandaises et belges qui considéraient que l’Afrique était le principal foyer et probablement l’origine de l’épidémie.

Cette conférence fut boycottée par le CDC et l’’Organisation mondiale de la santé (OMS).
