The head of Israel’s third largest political party Ayman Odeh began a four-day walk on Thursday from the Negev desert to Jerusalem in order to bring attention to the issue of unrecognised Bedouin villages.
Odeh has long campaigned for the rights of the Bedouins in the desert, where there are as many as 40 unrecognised villages that are not connected to the state’s electricity or water grids and lack basic infrastructure.
“The existence of unrecognised villages, which have no water, electricity, schools or institutions is not just a stain on the government but a continuous crime and tragedy,” Odeh said. “These villages existed before the creation of Israel by decades. I decided to walk from the Negev to the Knesset before the formation of the new government to emphasise the priority of the issue and the depth of the ongoing crime.”

Il n’y a pas de signalisation pour sortir de la Route 40 vers la route de terre qui mène au village d’al-Araqib.
Situé dans la région du Naqab (Negev) d’Israël d’aujourd’hui, al-Araqib est plus vieux que l’État lui-même : son cimetière date de 1914. Et pourtant, ceci n’est pas considéré comme important par les autorités.

Le vent, les oies, les chiens et les hélicoptères, qui se font entendre la nuit, se sont tus et ont laissé la place à un groupe de moineaux excités par l’approche de l’aube… La lueur du soleil se dessine à l’horizon à travers le halo de poussière qui surplombe ce bout de désert en forme de terrain vague, à première vue sans grandeur et sans majesté. La matinée commence à al-Araqib…

Israel denies Bedouin citizens basic services in life but claims them as civilians when they die.
Over 400 Palestinians have been killed since Israel began its current military operation in Gaza. According to the United Nations, approximately three-quarters of Gaza’s dead are civilians; many are children.
In Israel, two civilians have been killed. One was a Bedouin, the 32-year-old Oudi Lafi al-Waj, who lived in an unrecognized village in the Negev (Naqab) desert, near Dimona. Several Bedouin children have also been injured by rocket fire since Israel began “Operation Protective Edge.”
Bedouin villages do not have air raid sirens, nor are they covered by Iron Dome. They also lack bomb shelters.

Qui - dans un très bel article sur « Visions cartographiques » - a réconstitué le décors politique et social d’Al Araqib, et expliqué que le village avait été détruit une soixantaine de fois déjà. Donc une fois de plus.

J’y étais en décembre 2006, le village avait déjà été détruit 13 fois... Marion Lecoquierre y était en 2013, elle est revenue avec un très beau reportage qui sera publié très bientôt sur le nouveau site « Visions carto », l’occasion de faire un parallèle avec la situation en 2006 et celle de 2013.

Israeli forces demolish Bedouin village in Negev for 66th time
BEERSHEBA (Ma‘an) 12 Mar — Israeli forces demolished the Bedouin village of al-Araqib for the 66th time on Wednesday, leaving dozens of people in the open despite heavy rains. A large number of Israeli police and bulldozers surrounded the village in the early morning and demolished all of the residential steel structures. “Israeli occupation forces raided the village at 6:15 a.m. and demolished its houses for the 66th time,” one of the residents, Aziz al-Touri, told Ma‘an. “Under such conditions and with this heavy rain and severe cold, we tell Israeli officials that what you did is a crime against humanity. But no matter what you do, we will never give up our right in al-Araqib, the land of our fathers and grandfathers.” Two days earlier, inspectors from the Israel Land Authority had entered the village to take pictures of steel houses erected by residents near a cemetery.
