The Open 3D Foundation will support open source projects that advance capabilities related to 3D graphics, rendering, authoring, and development. Amazon Web Services (AWS) is contributing an updated version of the Amazon Lumberyard game engine as the Open 3D Engine (O3DE), under the permissive Apache 2.0 license.

Conscient de cet état de fait, Amazon a décidé de rendre le Lumberyard complètement open source et a choisi la licence Apache 2.0 qui est très permissive. Le résultat s’appelle bêtement Open 3D Engine et le code est même déjà dispo sur GitHub. Le tout est géré par la toute nouvelle Open 3D Foundation, une nouvelle ONG créée par la Linux Foundation qui compte parmi ses membres fondateurs Adobe, Audiokinetic (Wwise), Huawei, Intel, Niantic (Pokémon Go), Red Hat et Wargaming.
