  • Unhappy with the recently lost file upload feature in the Nextcloud app for Android? So are we. Let us explain. - Nextcloud
    https://nextcloud.com/blog/nextcloud-android-file-upload-issue-google

#Google is stating security concerns as a reason for revoking the permission. This is hard to believe for us. #Nextcloud has had this feature since its inception in 2016, and we have never heard about any security concerns from Google about it. Moreover, several Big Tech apps as well as Google’s own still have this. What we think: Google owning the platform means they can and are giving themselves preferential treatment.

To make it crystal clear: All of you as users have a worse Nextcloud Files client because Google wanted that.

The more tech-savvy of you are certainly able to use the alternative app store, such as #F-Droid. But for our user base of roughly one million users on the #appstore, this will hardly be an option.

I won’t lie: it’s easy to add or remove startup apps, commands, and scripts in Ubuntu. Just open the Startup Applications tool, click ‘Add’, and away you go. But while Ubuntu’s utility is adequate, it’s not as user-friendly as similar tools available elsewhere. Sure, Startup Applications is equipped with the critical customisation fields a user will need to curate a set of software/services to start at login — SSH agent, VPN app, password manager, backup script, resolution tweaks, and so on — but it’s rather rote. Take the way you add an app to start at login: Ubuntu’s Startup Applications […] You’re reading Ignition is a Modern Startup Applications Utility for Linux, a blog post from OMG! Ubuntu. • These alternatives to popular #apps can help reclaim your online life from billionaires and surveillance

There is immense power in being in control of your own data. As ownership and governance of apps and online services consolidate, it’s understandable if you want to consider your options when it comes to where you store your private data and records of your everyday activities.

Fortunately, not every service out there is trying to monetize your personal data, and many offerings are just as good (if not often better) as their commercial or ad-supported rivals.

Take a minute to think about what you’d want to leave behind. #Big_Tech giants that hoard your data? Subscription services? Invasive ad tracking? Government surveillance? Your needs and risks are unique to you, but hopefully a few of these recommendations help to hit the spot.

#Wallabag the stories you want to read later

If you ever wanted to read something later, like a news story, feature article, or anything else with a web address, save it to your #Wallabag. This read-later web-archiving service may not have the same ring to it as its main commercial rival Pocket, but Wallabag is a strong competitor with article-saving tools and features as good as what Pocket offers. You can save your must-reads for later on a Wallabag server you can run for free on a network attached storage (NAS) server that you host somewhere in a closet at home, or hosted in the cloud for a low-cost subscription.

Why does this matter? Other read-later apps track usage in order to find trends and recommend content (often sponsored) to you. Some want this, and that’s cool! But some don’t.

#Signal is the encrypted messaging app to use

Signal is one of the most revered secure messaging apps for the simple reason that, by design, it knows nothing about you. On occasion, Signal will make this point by publishing the search warrants it sometimes receives, knowing that it can’t provide to the authorities data that it doesn’t keep. Signal’s security has been called the “gold standard” of messaging apps by cryptography experts. Signal is free to download and use but relies on donations as a nonprofit.

Why you should care: It’s not just your private messages and calls that Signal keeps encrypted from prying eyes and ears, but Signal also crucially scrambles who you contact and communicate with, and when, which can also be incredibly revealing about a person’s life.

    #Nextcloud is a self-hosted #Dropbox alternative

Nextcloud is a Dropbox alternative that features all of the document editing and sharing features you’d expect from a file storage system. A huge benefit to Nextcloud is that you can host a server yourself for free at home, where you can keep it private and under your control, or have a Nextcloud server run for you by a specialized hosting provider.

Nextcloud is built with security in mind and provides you end-to-end encrypted access to your files from your phone or any other device you have. Or, if simply having a self-hosted Dropbox-like alternative as a storage backup for your most sensitive and personal files sounds like something you’d want, Nextcloud is a great place to start.

Why does this matter? Cloud storage is often secure and private in some ways, but the companies that run them are beholden to law enforcement and may also invisibly scan your files (for good reason, but still) that can get you suddenly and permanently banned from your online accounts. Hosting your own doesn’t mean you are free from police showing up at your house with a warrant, but at least you’d be aware of it.

Never forget your #passwords again with #Bitwarden

Password managers are a great investment in your personal security; these apps securely store your passwords, passkeys, credit cards, and other secrets, so you don’t have to remember them. Bitwarden is a popular open source password manager that helps you log in quickly to your favorite sites and auto-fills your credit card details when you want to pay for something, and more. You can access your Bitwarden password manager anywhere, including from your phone. Bitwarden is free for anyone to use, but low-cost for additional features.

Why does this matter? When it comes to security of password managers, the more eyeballs inspecting the source code to ensure its reliability and integrity, the better. And while other password managers are also good, open source systems like Bitwarden are more readily auditable and open about their software development process.

#Joplin and #Notesnook keep your notes and scribbles encrypted

For those who want to leave #Google_Docs or #Microsoft_365 behind, there are plenty of note-taking apps that keep all of your notes, thoughts, and scribbles in one place that you can access anytime. Joplin is a popular document and productivity app that keeps your files organized, encrypted, and in open formats (like Markdown) so you can take them with you anywhere else. Notesnook is another note-taking app that lets you export your notes to use with other apps and is end-to-end encrypted so that nobody can read your files. The same cannot be said for Google Docs!

Why does this matter? Big companies like Google and Microsoft are increasingly unifying their services, which today means exposing your notes, emails, and files to their AI systems. This can be useful for sure, but if you’d rather just have a simple, cross-platform text syncing app, there are plenty of options that don’t do any kind of invasive analysis at all.

#Ente is an encrypted vault for your #photos

If you want to leave behind Apple Photos, #Flickr, Google Photos, YouTube, and the like, Ente.io bills itself as a privacy-focused photo storage app designed simply to securely back up all of your photos and videos to the cloud. Ente scrambles your data with a password only you know, protecting your memories from anyone else, and backs up your data in multiple locations around the world for safekeeping. Plus, Ente offers all of the photo management and sharing features you need from a photo app. Ente is free for basic accounts and reasonably priced for more storage options.

Why does this matter? Much like notes and documents, images are a huge target for AI systems. Auto-tagging your friends might sound helpful, but it requires consent. You should have to opt in before a machine learning model scans every face you’ve ever taken a picture of. That alone is a good reason to look at an independent service that gives you a little more choice.

    #Open_Scanner is a very simple document-scanning app

Document scanning doesn’t have to be a complicated or convoluted process. Open Scanner is an incredibly simple point-and-click document-scanning app for iPhones, and its code is published online. That’s it. Sometimes that’s the true beauty of disconnecting from profit-driven corporations that bloat their apps with AI junk and features nobody really needs. Open Scanner can snap receipts, notes, textbooks, or anything else you can point your phone at.

Why does this matter? Unless you really need a professional scanner, your phone is more than good enough and probably better than a lot of cheaper scanners out there. Skip the need for any printer-brand hardware gear and use something simple and free.

Aggregate your news headlines using #FreshRSS

#RSS is an amazing web technology that lets you subscribe to feeds of information from your favorite sites, blogs, news sources, and more. Most news sites offer RSS feeds (TechCrunch does!) that deliver the headlines to RSS-compatible apps, known as RSS readers. There are loads of RSS readers to choose from. For more than a decade, FreshRSS has been one of the most feature-packed RSS readers for its overall simplicity. You can self-host an instance, or deploy a private server to a specializing cloud host. Once you get your favorite feeds subscribed, the end result is like having your very own self-updating digital newspaper.

Why does this matter? You’d be surprised how different the news feels when you see it this way. And having your own RSS setup skips the kind of sponsored posts and tracking that you see on hosted services, much like the read-it-later ones.

    Own your livestreams with #Owncast

For those who broadcast their own shows, gameplay, or anything in between, Owncast is a self-hosted streaming system for setting up and hosting livestreams. Owncast is wildly popular, as it’s free, fairly easy to use, and works with your existing livestreaming gear. You might not have thought about livestreaming before, but this is a good way to wade into unfamiliar but friendly waters.

Why does this matter? Sites like Twitch are certainly popular, but you may not want to rely entirely on the tools of a giant corporation for every step of a creative process (in this case, Amazon). Owncast and other open streaming apps are a great way to hedge your bets while maybe opening up a new audience.

    #Stirling_PDF is a one-stop #PDF editing shop

Handling and editing PDF documents has never been consistently easy. For those who don’t want to pony up for Adobe’s software or upload their files to sketchy-looking file conversion websites, Stirling PDF is the Swiss Army knife for PDF documents. Convert, edit, merge, split, sign, and more, without having to hand over your personal or sensitive files to a cloud giant. Stirling PDF also lets you self-host if you prefer to handle documents with particular sensitivity.

Why does this matter? Frankly, any time there’s a realistic alternative to #Adobe, take it.

  • #Frontex and #Europol: How refugees are tracked digitally

Image: Border guards in Croatia „punish“ refugees by destroying their mobile phones. Europol and Frontex, on the other hand, want their forensic evaluation (Jack Sapoch).

EU agencies advise increased confiscation and extraction of asylum seekers‘ mobile phones and now provide a manual on how to do so. Apps to encrypt or disguise locations are disliked in the report as „countermeasures“ to surveillance.

Often the mobile phones they carry are the only connection between refugees and their relatives and friends in their country of origin or elsewhere. They contain contacts, personal communication as well as photos and videos as a memory of the home countries. Only within the European Union is it possible to apply for asylum in its member states. Therefore, the phones are also an indispensable aid for navigating to receiving countries and finding out about conditions and support there.

Asylum seekers‘ mobile phones are also of increasing interest to authorities. As punishment for irregular entry, border guards in Greece and Croatia, and most recently at the EU’s external border with Belarus, destroy them before abandoning their owners at sea or forcibly push them back. Police forces, on the other hand, confiscate the phones in order to gain information about routes used and people helping to flee.

Phones used to „lock, conceal and disguise“

Frontex is actually responsible for preventing irregular migration. „migrant smuggling“ is considered cross-border, organised crime, so its prosecution also falls under Europol’s jurisdiction. Five years ago, Europol opened an #Anti-Migrant_Smuggling_Centre (#EMSC) in The Hague. Europol has also set up two analysis projects, „#Phoenix“ and „#Migrant_Smuggling“, where all interested and involved member states can store and access information.

Both agencies monitor the #internet and social media, looking for any indications of „migrant smuggling“ there. Intelligence also comes from a „#Joint_Operational_Office“ in Vienna, in which Europol and the German Federal Police are also involved. An „#Internet_Referral_Unit“ (#EU_IRU) at Europol reports online presence of unwanted support for the transportation of refugees to the Internet service providers for removal.

Frontex and Europol have now published a report on the „#Digitalisation of people smuggling“. However, it is less about the tools of „smugglers“ and more about the phones of refugees. In the guide, the two EU agencies give handouts on the most commonly used messengers and how the authorities can access the content stored there.

No apps for „smuggling of migrants“ discovered

Over several pages, the report presents various apps and services, including Facebook, Instagram, Signal, Skvpe, Telegram, Viber, WhatsApp. Also included are popular VPN services or apps for encryption. They are described as „countermeasures“ to police surveillance. Frontex and Europol also list tools that can be used to disguise #GPS positions or phone numbers, calling them apps to „lock, conceal and disguise“.

Also listed are various mapping applications and open geographic data sources, including Maps.me and Google Maps, which can be used to share coordinates, routes and other information. This concerns, for example, immigration possibilities via the Eastern Mediterranean and the so-called Balkan routes. According to the report, these applications are used to a much lesser extent for routes from Russia and Ukraine or via Poland. Its contents were primarily aimed at asylum seekers from the Middle East, North Africa and Southeast Asian countries.

Frontex repeatedly claimed in recent years that there were apps specifically developed for „migrant smuggling“. The German government also claims to have heard „that so-called apps by smugglers exist, with which offers of boats and information about conditions in various destination countries can be retrieved“. According now to Frontex and Europol, however, such digital tools have not been discovered so far.

„Special tactics“ to obtain password or pin code

At the end of the report, the agencies give tips on how to seize and read mobile communication devices. According to the report, they come from „specialists“ and „experts“ from the #Centre_for_Cybercrime and the #Centre_for_Combating_Migrant_Smuggling at Europol. Recommendations from „other sources“ were also taken into account.

According to the „#checklist_for_facilitating_forensic_extraction“, the devices should be connected to a power bank and kept in a Faraday bag so that they do not connect to the internet. In this way, the authorities want to avoid their owners deleting content remotely. If the police have the PIN, the phone should be put into flight mode.

The authorities should „ideally“ also confiscate charging cables, memory cards and other SIM cards in the possession of the refugees. All items should be sealed and marked with the personal data of their owners. To facilitate their analysis, a device password or PIN code for forensic analysis should be provided „whenever possible“. According to the agencies, this can be done either by „addressing this matter to the user“ or by using „special tactics“.

The report leaves open whether this also includes exerting pressure or coercion on the asylum seekers or rather technical measures.

    https://gresea.be/Naissance-de-la-Federation-transnationale-des-coursiers-FTC-Transnational

  • On-demand home cleaning service Kisafi launches in Kenya
    https://disrupt-africa.com/2016/04/on-demand-home-cleaning-service-kisafi-launches-in-kenya

On-demand home cleaning and laundry service Kisafi has launched in Nairobi, Kenya, aiming to bring consumers convenience at the click of a button and spread across the region.

Kisafi – the name means “it is clean” in Swahili – allows homeowners to use the web or an Android app to have their laundry picked up and taken care of or their homes cleaned.

The platform has been in private beta since December but launched to the general public on Nairobi today, with launches in Tanzania, Uganda and Rwanda to follow before a rollout in West Africa at a later date.

Complete with a founding team with backgrounds at McKinsey & Co, Citigroup and Accenture, Kisafi has a quality control and assurance centre with modern commercial cleaning equipment in Nairobi, and offers a marketplace of former and current hospitality and hotel employees.

It has signed partnerships with two of the top laundry and dry cleaning service providers in Nairobi, and also has a tech-enablement suite, including body cameras for the recording of the cleaning process and a high-grade photo filing system for before and after wash clothing pictures.

Co-founder Janet Otieno said Kisafi was trying to make premium laundry and home cleaning a utility that is available to everyone, and save people time.

“Given the rate of growth of the emerging affluent and middle class across Sub-Saharan Africa, coupled with the fast pace of work and life, every minute spent on chores counts,” she said.

“We asked folks that were part of our closed beta why they love the service, and unanimously it was at least two things – ease and affordability.”

Kisafi – which has seed investment from angels in Lagos and New York – said it was aiming to take a significant portion of emerging affluent market, and has a pan-African focus.

“This is reflected in our team composition. Our founding and advisory team is made up of folks from Kenya, Nigeria and South Africa,” Otieno said.

  • Des marchés aux esclaves sur Instagram et autres applications | Slate.fr
    http://www.slate.fr/story/183654/marches-aux-esclaves-instagram-applications-travailleuses-domestiques-kafala

  • Spotify, The Apple App Store & Why PWAs Rule
    https://love2dev.com/pwa/spotify-apple-appstore

Comment Apple décourage au maximum le développement des PWAs...
    ...et pourquoi c’est un combat d’arrière-garde perdu d’avance !
(et avant tout une histoire de GROS sous)

The more I discuss the merits of progressive web applications over native apps with clients and potential clients I have formulated a simple way to determine if you should develop and ship a mobile app:
“Does your app help sell iPhones or generate significant store revenue for Apple?”
If your answer is yes then you should think about developing an app. Otherwise a progressive web app is probably your better choice.

We also know that consumers are tired of mobile apps. Today no one downloads apps anymore. Sure there are app downloads, but by and large the fad has ended. Most app downloads are to new phones, ‘restoring’ a user’s existing apps.
    [...]
Right now there are many large brands taking that journey. Uber, Lyft, Twitter and others are in the process of moving to a progressive web app solution. Most have PWAs with feature parity to their native apps. They typically have moved to a PWA as the client code base and use a hybrid wrapper like Cordova to put the solution in the store.

Blocking updates is another major aspect of Spotify’s complaints. I know they are not alone, I talk to app owners all the time that express frustration with long update cycles and rejections. It is a trail of frustration for many.
On the web, you find a bug, fix it and deploy an update as fast as you can. That could literally be a couple of minutes to just under an hour if you have your ducks in a row, and it is not a major bug of course.
I know some sites update 1500 or more times a day. Try that with your native app.
    [...]
Good luck doing that with Apple in the way. Developers I speak with tell me they expect 2-4 weeks before bug deployments are actually released in the store.

How We Achieved Nearly 4 Million Impressions by Getting Featured in the App Store. How we did it. What happened, and more importantly — what didn’t.GenM.coWhen we launched our mobile app earlier last year we were mainly concerned with making sure we were able to give users the same functionality that they have with our desktop experience. Letting businesses easily browse through the GenM talent pool of student marketers, letting students complete our digital marketing lessons on the go — these were priority. The last thing on our minds was getting featured in the App Store. But when the email from #apple landed in our inbox that they were selecting our app to be highlighted in their “This Week’s Favorites” category, our sights started to aim a little bit higher. After our hands ached from countless (...)
