I am so mad about this special issue on architecture by one of Austria’s largest newspapers. Most obviously, there are sixteen men and only one woman, only three people who are not Caucasian men. But it is even worse in the details; Zaha Hadid is referred to as British and not Iraqi-Birtish architect; Kazuyo Sejima, who is arguably one of the most famous female architects living — and who teaches in Vienna!! — is completely left out; in supplementary interviews male Viennese professors talk at length about other men and their projects, but fail to acknowledge the work of Liz Diller when they mention the high line in passing. For an issue on designers throughout time and architectural history (eight of the seventeen selected architects are dead) this is an outrageously narrow selection. And did I already say: where is Margarete Schütte-Lihotzky?
