A Team of Volunteers Is Archiving #SoundCloud in Case it Dies
▻https://motherboard.vice.com/en_us/article/a3d4x8/archive-team-soundcloud
Spurred by recent reports the German streaming music and audio company may be running out of cash, The Archive Team is racing to preserve sound files—at high cost.
Scott estimates SoundCloud’s entire library is 1 petabyte (or 1 million gigabytes) in size. But a page on Amazon’s Web Services solutions site highlights SoundCloud as a case study customer, and says that SoundCloud was storing 2.5 petabytes of data.
“I think that page on Amazon’s AWS page is using old numbers, and they have little initiative to round downwards,” Scott wrote.
Motherboard emailed Amazon’s and SoundCloud’s press addresses to confirm the numbers, but did not receive responses in time for this article’s publication
Either way, we’re talking about a lot of cash. Scott said that at 1 petabyte, it would cost between $1.5 million and $2 million to store all the files for the foreseeable future on server space loaned out from the separate Archive.org, the non-profit organization that manages the Internet Archive (where Scott is also employed). Figuring Scott’s estimate of a cost of $1500 per terabyte to store on Archive.org servers, storing 2.5 petabytes for the foreseeable future would cost $3.75 million.

Epic Records drops Death Grips after they leak their own record

In news that should come as a shock to absolutely no one even a little familiar with the record business or business in general, after leaking their own record online, Death Grips have been dropped from Epic Records. No Love Deep Web hit the net last month after the group was told by Epic that the record wouldn’t see the light of day until 2013. “The label will be hearing the album for the first time with you,” explained the band.

Epic Records is a music first company that breaks new artists. That is our mission and our mandate. Unfortunately, when marketing and publicity stunts trump the actual music, we must remind ourselves of our core values. To that end, effective immediately, we are working to dissolve our relationship with Death Grips. We wish them well.

You know the story by now, but in case you don’t: On Monday, 10/1, Death Grips gave away their highly anticipated new album, NO LOVE DEEP WEB, ostensibly against the wishes of their label Epic Records. Call it a victory for Internet-freedom cheerleaders.

Scanning a Braille Playboy | Internet Archive Blogs
►http://blog.archive.org/2011/08/17/scanning-a-braille-playboy
There are lots of these scanning centers affiliated with or run by the Internet Archive worldwide, often in alliance with libraries or academic institutions, bringing in a whole range of materials – not just books. Audio, video, microfiche and a few other mediums are being brought in via a very well engineered combination of machines, processes and trained staff. This link gives a lot of information if you’re a group who has a bunch of books to scan in and want a great open service to work with.
