Trump said he agreed to the proposal by Pakistan, which calls for a two-week cease-fire and the immediate opening of the Strait of Hormuz. Over the next two weeks, Trump said that the United States will work on finalizing an agreement with Iran.
“The reason for doing so is that we have already met and exceeded all Military objectives, and are very far along with a definitive Agreement concerning Longterm PEACE with Iran, and PEACE in the Middle East,” he wrote on social media. “We received a 10 point proposal from Iran, and believe it is a workable basis on which to negotiate.”

Trump said that the agreement was “subject to the Islamic Republic of Iran agreeing to the COMPLETE, IMMEDIATE, and SAFE OPENING of the Strait of Hormuz,” meaning that Iran has not yet agreed to conditions. In the past, Iran has insisted it would only open the Strait in return for a complete peace agreement, guaranteeing no further attacks by the U.S. and Israel, but not a cease-fire.

Iran accepted Pakistan’s two-week cease-fire proposal following frantic diplomatic efforts by Pakistan and last-minute intervention by China, a key ally, asking Iran to show flexibility and defuse tensions, and amid growing concerns about the economic devastation from damages to critical infrastructure, according to three Iranian officials. They said the cease-fire was approved by the new supreme leader, Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei.

Just three weeks ago, President Trump was calling for Iran’s “unconditional surrender.” But in his new statement on social media, Mr. Trump said he was willing to discuss a 10-point proposal from Iran, saying it was “a workable basis on which to negotiate.” Those 10 points, at least those that have leaked out, did not address whether Iran would give up all of its nuclear stockpiles and permanently halt all enrichment of uranium.

The Iranian 10-point proposal includes a lifting of all sanctions — placed on Iran by every American administration since the George W. Bush administration. But it is unclear whether the West would want to give up that powerful economic leverage before winning major concessions on Iran’s nuclear program, its missiles, and its repression of protestors.

Iran’s foreign minister, Abbas Araghchi, said in a statement that Iran has agreed to Pakistan’s proposal for a cease-fire and that attacks against Iran are halted, Iran will also “cease their defensive operation. For a period of two weeks, safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz will be possible via coordinating with Iran’s Armed Forces.”
