Peer feedback is the engine of #The_Geneva_Learning_Foundation’s learning system. A new screening tool protects that engine, and its design answers three questions education specialists have been circling for decades: what peer assessment is for, how much verification a learning system can afford, and what a certificate can honestly claim. “Ok ok ok […]

Protecting our #FLOSS commons from LLMs — Codeberg News
    ▻https://blog.codeberg.org/protecting-our-floss-commons-from-llms.html

    In Brief:

    – Two motions regarding “#artificial_intelligence” and Large Language Models (#LLMs) were voted on among Codeberg e. V. members and passed.
    – We are promising to not use any of your data to train #LLM and explain what the planned Terms of Use change mean for ’#vibe-coded' projects.
    – We believe that LLMs endanger the free/libre software #ecosystem as a whole.

The #Codeberg e. V. annual assembly is the meeting that puts power into the hand of our active members. Proposals are discussed live, and later voted on asynchronously.

Since Large Language Models (LLMs) are an emerging but controversial technology, it is not surprising that two of the votes were concerned with Codeberg’s position about this technology. The 14-day voting period ended yesterday and both proposals were accepted.

Stop the GUARD Act and age verification laws worldwide
    ▻https://www.fsf.org/blogs/community/stop-the-guard-act

    (...)

If passed, the #GUARD_Act would place a nationwide ban on minors using “chatbot” services, and would require all users of such services in the #United_States to submit to mandatory verification. In short, it would open the door to a “#surveillance_regime.” Such a regime would make creating a free machine learning bundle almost, if not totally, impossible through its development restrictions and threats of criminialization. Say goodbye to the anonymous use of such tools, and hello to the suffocation of free software development and technology more generally.

While it’s nominally about protecting children from #chatbots, which are powered by so-called “#artificial_intelligence,” the Act has wide-reaching implications for all software users — and should be regarded as an existential threat to the entire free software movement. Chatbots and their ilk aren’t popular with our movement, but that doesn’t mean barring children from them is the right thing to do. What’s at stake is freedom 0 as we know it: the right for anyone of any age, anywhere, to use any program for any purpose. This freedom should be regarded as a cornerstone for a free digital society. Even as I write this, we’re teetering toward #dystopia. Freedom 0 is a fight we can’t afford to lose.

Europe must choose between AI and climate goals, data center lobby says

BRUSSELS — #Europe must prioritize #artificial_intelligence over its immediate #climate ambitions or risk surrendering its #tech #sovereignty to #China.

That’s the view of the president of the European Data Centre Association, which lobbies the #EU on behalf of data center companies.

Lex Coors said that Europe’s energy system is not ready to power advanced AI data centers, and Europe may need to fall back on new #carbon-emitting gas power plants to meet its tech sovereignty goals.

AI Tools in Society: Impacts on Cognitive Offloading and the Future of Critical Thinking
    ▻https://www.mdpi.com/2075-4698/15/1/6

    Abstract
The proliferation of artificial intelligence (AI) tools has transformed numerous aspects of daily life, yet its impact on critical thinking remains underexplored. This study investigates the relationship between AI tool usage and critical thinking skills, focusing on cognitive offloading as a mediating factor. Utilising a mixed-method approach, we conducted surveys and in-depth interviews with 666 participants across diverse age groups and educational backgrounds. Quantitative data were analysed using ANOVA and correlation analysis, while qualitative insights were obtained through thematic analysis of interview transcripts. The findings revealed a significant negative correlation between frequent AI tool usage and critical thinking abilities, mediated by increased cognitive offloading. Younger participants exhibited higher dependence on AI tools and lower critical thinking scores compared to older participants. Furthermore, higher educational attainment was associated with better critical thinking skills, regardless of AI usage. These results highlight the potential cognitive costs of AI tool reliance, emphasising the need for educational strategies that promote critical engagement with AI technologies. This study contributes to the growing discourse on AI’s cognitive implications, offering practical recommendations for mitigating its adverse effects on critical thinking. The findings underscore the importance of fostering critical thinking in an AI-driven world, making this research essential reading for educators, policymakers, and technologists.

How AI Destroys Institutions by Woodrow Hartzog, Jessica M. Silbey :: SSRN
    ►https://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cfm?abstract_id=5870623

    Abstract

Civic institutions—the rule of law, universities, and a free press—are the backbone of democratic life. They are the mechanisms through which complex societies encourage cooperation and stability, while also adapting to changing circumstances. The real superpower of institutions is their ability to evolve and adapt within a hierarchy of authority and a framework for roles and rules while maintaining legitimacy in the knowledge produced and the actions taken. Purpose-driven institutions built around transparency, cooperation, and accountability empower individuals to take intellectual risks and challenge the status quo. This happens through the machinations of interpersonal relationships within those institutions, which broaden perspectives and strengthen shared commitment to civic goals.

Unfortunately, the affordances of AI systems extinguish these institutional features at every turn. In this essay, we make one simple point: AI systems are built to function in ways that degrade and are likely to destroy our crucial civic institutions. The affordances of AI systems have the effect of eroding expertise, short-circuiting decision-making, and isolating people from each other. These systems are anathema to the kind of evolution, transparency, cooperation, and accountability that give vital institutions their purpose and sustainability. In short, current #AI_systems are a death sentence for civic institutions, and we should treat them as such.

The alarms are valid. The images are harmful. But I am deeply concerned that in our rush to condemn the new technology, we are misdiagnosing the cause. The problem is not the tool. The 2025 State of AI Report has arrived, painting a picture of an industry being fundamentally reshaped by “The Squeeze.” This is a critical, intensifying constraint on three key resources: the massive-scale #compute (processing power) required for training, the availability of high-quality data, and the specialized human talent to build frontier models. This squeeze, the report details, is accelerating a consolidation of power. It favors the “hyperscalers”—the handful of large technology corporations that can afford to build their own power plants to run their data centers. For leaders in #global_health and humanitarian action, the report is essential reading. However, it must be read with a critical eye. Artificial intelligence is forcing a reckoning not just in our schools, but in how we solve the world’s most complex problems. When ChatGPT exploded into public consciousness, the immediate fear that rippled through our institutions was singular: the corruption of process. The specter of students, professionals, and even leaders outsourcing their intellectual labor to a machine seemed to threaten the very foundation of competence and accountability. In response, a predictable arsenal was deployed: detection software, outright bans, and policies hastily drafted to contain the threat. Three years later, a more profound and unsettling truth is emerging. Most people not deeply involved in the #artificial_intelligence frenzy may not have noticed, but perceptions of AI’s relentless march toward becoming more intelligent than humans, even becoming a threat to humanity, came to a screeching halt Aug. 7.

That was the day when the most widely followed AI company, #OpenAI, released #GPT-5, an advanced product that the firm had long promised would put competitors to shame and launch a new revolution in this purportedly revolutionary technology.

As it happened, GPT-5 was a bust. It turned out to be less user-friendly and in many ways less capable than its predecessors in OpenAI’s arsenal. It made the same sort of risible errors in answering users’ prompts, was no better in math (or even worse), and not at all the advance that OpenAI and its chief executive, Sam Altman, had been talking up.

Through a peer learning network—where health workers develop projects addressing real challenges, review each other’s work, and engage in facilitated dialogue—she connects with other health professionals across Latin America who are learning to work with AI as a collaborative partner. Together, they discover that AI becomes far more useful when combined with their understanding of local contexts, cultural practices, and community (...)

    #Eric_Schmidt’s #San_Francisco_Consensus about the impact of #Artificial_intelligence
    ▻https://redasadki.me/2025/07/16/eric-schmidts-san-francisco-consensus-about-the-impact-of-artificial-intel

“We are at the beginning of a new epoch,” Eric Schmidt declared at the RAISE Summit in Paris on 9 July 2025. The former Google CEO’s message carries unusual weight—not necessarily because of his past role leading one of tech’s giants, but because of his current one: advising heads of state and industry on #Artificial_Intelligence. “When I talk to governments, what I tell them is, one, ChatGPT is great, but that was two years ago. Everything’s changed again. You’re not prepared for it. And two, you better get organized around it—the good and the bad.” At the Paris summit, he shared what he calls the “San Francisco Consensus”—a convergence of belief among Silicon Valley’s leaders that within three to six years AI will fundamentally transform every aspect of human activity. Whether one views this (...)

The #agentic_AI revolution: what does it mean for #workforce_development?

Imagine hiring an assistant who never sleeps, never forgets, can work on a thousand tasks simultaneously, and communicates with you in your own language. Now imagine having not just one such assistant, but an entire team of them, each specialized in different areas, all coordinating seamlessly to achieve your goals. This is the “agentic revolution” —a transformation where AI systems become agents that can understand objectives, remember context, plan actions, and work together to complete complex tasks. It represents a shift from AI as a tool you use to AI as a workforce that you collaborate with. Understanding AI agents: More than chatbots When most people think of AI today, they think of ChatGPT or similar systems—you ask a question, you get an answer. That interaction ends, and the (...)

The business of #Artificial_intelligence and the #equity challenge
    ▻https://redasadki.me/2025/06/13/the-business-of-artificial-intelligence-and-the-equity-challenge

Since 2019, when #The_Geneva_Learning_Foundation (TGLF) launched its first AI pilot project, we have been exploring how the #Second_Machine_Age is reshaping learning. Ahead of the release of the first framework for AI in global health, I had a chance to sit down with a group of Swiss business leaders at the PanoramAI conference in Lausanne on 5 June 2025 to share TGLF’s insights about the significance and potential of #Artificial_Intelligence for global health and humanitarian response. Here is the article posted by the conference to recap a few of the take-aways. The Global Equity Challenger At the Panoramai AI Summit, Reda Sadki, leader of The Geneva Learning Foundation, delivered provocative insights about AI’s impact on global equity and the future of human work. Drawing from (...)

The Chicago Sun-Times newspaper’s “Best of Summer” section published over the weekend contains a guide to summer reads that features real authors and fake books that they did not write was partially generated by #artificial_intelligence, the person who generated it told 404 Media.

Chicago newspaper prints a summer reading list. The problem? The books don’t exist | CBC News

That’s because, while the authors may be real, the books don’t actually exist. And the Chicago Sun-Times is being roasted online for publishing the AI-generated list. The paper initially couldn’t explain how the piece was published.

Parait que les recettes de cuisine, c’est pas mieux. Diffuser de la merde pour des recettes de cuisine doit engager effectivement la responsabilité du diffuseur. Tôt ou tard, quelqu’un va tenter la pizza à la colle.
