Tech Addictions in the era of Attention Economy“Damn, I just opened YouTube for watching that one video and ended up spending hours on it”, “These apps are like rabbit hole”, “I logged in Facebook to find contact of one person, after an hour I found myself laughing at a meme” and so on. Feels related? Most of us, having active online lives have felt this way at some point or the other. Why do we end up wasting our precious hours online? Are we just being careless or is there more to it? Are we to be blamed in entirety? In order to answer these questions well, let’s understand how the tech giants operate and what are they fighting for. We have heard the phrase “Data is the new fuel”, “ If you are not paying for it, you’re not the customer, you’re the product being sold”.All the apps that we end up (...)

Back in the late 1990s, the web looked pretty much like the Wild West; anyone could grab a piece of digital land, put a name on it and start catching the attention of millions of users at the time, with a very lean team of people. This is how it started when the Netscape team, after having released their browser, made it available to millions of people in, at the time, nascent web. Netscape later IPOed and made clear to the world, that the Web was much more than just a few computers connected.Ever since new entrants have learned to dominate the scene, yet, over the years one thing has become clear. The most important asset on the web is people’s attention. Thus, web companies learned how to grab it, manipulate it, until the Web became a meme machine. If there is one thing our brain is good (...)

Push #notifications Are Not That Bad, You Just Need To Take Control Again

Just a year ago, the first thing I did when I woke up was picking up my phone and instantly reviewing my notifications. Despite what Tristan Harris said about tech hijacking my morning routine, I was still doing it.I didn’t want to check my social media in front of my employees. I wanted to show to an investor or client that emailed me overnight that I was working early in the morning. I needed to know if an important email would impact my morning meetings. As a startup founder, I always had a good reason to do it.And it seems that I’m not the only one. According to a recent survey from the tech analyst company ReportLinker, 46 % of Americans admitted to checking their #smartphones before they even get out of bed in the morning. How did that happen?Push Notifications Become Part Of Our Daily (...)

image source: pexels.comTime is the most valuable commodity we will ever have. All of the treasured and trying moments of our lives are measured with time, and everyone is aware that we have a finite amount of it. Most people want to prolong that time as much as possible, and strive to value it with the care that it deserves.“Live life to the fullest, because time is fleeting,” as the saying goes. In the here and now, companies are concerned about our time as well. They want us to give them our focus, attention, and, most importantly, our money. As a result, they spend millions of dollars on compelling advertising campaigns, they issue shiny annual releases, and they promulgate their products where they think we are most likely to purchase them. This isn’t usually done with any intentional (...)

How do I make my #attention span longer again? I found two ways

My mind when I surf the webSo yeah… Everybody is saying that because of the #internet and stuff our attention span is getting shorter and shorter. I don’t want that. I want to think deeply about topics and come with unbiased and good answers to questions, viewed from as many perspectives as possible. So how do I make my attention span longer again? That’s what I’m trying to answer, and don’t forget it (because of my short attention span and sparsely divided memory (which, obviously, accounts for memory loss, sometimes). So by writing it down as a #medium post, I hope not to forget it. Because it seems important. Wow, haha, I think there’s a movie about this!First of all. Why does your attention span get shorter from internet? It’s probably because of hyperlinks. At least, that’s what they say in (...)
