A modern incarnation of the pushpin dental chair is the sleek BrainPort, which sits on a blind person’s tongue and translates information from a wearable digital camera (similar in looks to Cyclops’ visor) into electrical vibrations on the tongue.

With time, users are able to interpret the “bubble-like” patterns as the shape, size, location and motion of objects around them. They get so good that they can navigate through an obstacle course.

“I do not see images as if I were sighted, but if I look at a soccer ball I feel a round solid disk on my tongue,” says one user, “the stimulation…works very much like pixels on a visual screen.”

A Palestinian newspaper published in Gaza has launched a Braille edition, becoming the first of its kind in the besieged strip to provide access to the visually impaired. #Palestine newspaper released its first copy for blind readers on Saturday, its website said. “The Braille edition gives people with visual disabilities the right to access details via hard copy,” the site boasted. Shubham Banerjee, a seventh-grade student from Santa Clara, Calif., developed the Braille printer using toy construction Lego pieces. The low-cost invention could be an accessible solution for blind and disadvantaged people across the globe, Banerjee said.
 
The printer, dubbed Braigo (short for Braille with Lego), was created from the Lego Mindstorms EV3 set, which retails for $349. Banerjee also added $5-worth of additional materials, which means the finished product costs about $350. This makes Braigo much more affordable than other Braille printers, which can retail for more than $2,000, according to Banerjee.

Le projet est assez fou, mais complètement inédit : permettre aux aveugles de lire une bande dessinée, en s’appuyant sur l’invention de Braille, c’est tout le projet de Philipp Meyer, un designer basé à Copenhague. Il a ainsi réalisé le premier comics pour aveugles, intitulé sobremement Life.

The Atlas of the United States Printed for the Use of the Blind was published in 1837 for children at the New England Institute for the Education of the Blind in Boston. Without a drop of ink in the book, the text and maps in this extraordinary atlas were embossed heavy paper with letters, lines, and symbols. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first atlas produced for the blind to read without the assistance of a sighted person.

Braille was invented by 1825, but was not widely used until later. It represented letters well, but could not represent shapes and cartographic features.

Una nueva etapa en la definición de los derechos digitales y de autor se inauguró en Colombia luego de radicarse la semana pasada la «Ley Romero», que intentará regular estos puntos de una manera distinta a la «Ley Lleras», que el Gobierno presentó en abril causando polémica tanto en el mundo académico como el digital.

(...) «La ’Ley Lleras’ presume la culpa de los usuarios. Nosotros estamos jugados en que se respete el debido proceso y la Constitución», explicó Romero, el principal redactor de la nueva ley, al momento de presentarla.

Según los expertos, la nueva propuesta defendería de mucho mejor forma conceptos como la cultura y las artes, sin dejar de lado la posibilidad de utilizar las obras para fines justos. «Las obras literarias, científicas, artísticas, audiovisuales y radiofónicas, fonogramas (...), producidas en cualquier formato, podrán ser reproducidas, distribuidas, comunicadas, traducidas, adaptadas, arregladas o transformadas en lengua de señas, en #braille (...), sin autorización de sus autores ni pago de los Derechos de Autor, siempre y cuando sea sin fines de lucro», indica el proyecto.
