Construction of Moscow’s Hovrinskaya Hospital began in 1980 and halted five years later, leaving behind an unsettling, brutalist shell of what would have been a 1,300-bed hospital. At a glance, it’s easy to imagine how a plethora of creepy tales and urban legends might have emerged from the ruins of the abandoned, unfinished hospital. And indeed they have. But not all of these stories are the stuff of folklore.

Dans la cour du sanatorium Amra, « soleil » en abkhaze, Galina et Alexandra savourent l’air doux de la mer et des montagnes alentour, à l’ombre des palmiers et des sapins. « Saviez-vous que l’Abkhazie était le pays de l’âme ?, demande la première, vêtue d’une robe ample à fleurs, on la ressent partout, où que vous alliez. » Une phrase qu’ici, dans ce petit morceau de terre de 215 kilomètres de côtes le long de la mer Noire, au nord-ouest de la Géorgie, habitants et touristes ne se lassent pas de répéter.

Mirko Nahmijas has lived in Belgrade his whole life, but looking through the lens of his Canon 6D has helped him see the futuristic buildings looming over his city with new eyes.

“When you’re born here you never appreciate it,” he says. “You never notice the buildings.”

Nahmijas started shooting images of the brutalist buildings of his hometown in January. The style of architecture, also known as socialist modernism, was popular in Serbia in the 1970s when the country was still known as Yugoslavia and was under the communist rule of Josip Broz Tito. His images capture the stark, almost alien beauty of the structures against clear blue skies, free of their urban context and empty of humans.

This article is a sequel of the one written on October 26 about the weaponized architecture of police stations in Paris’ Northern banlieues. Now that the state of emergency has been declared (see previous article), the power granted to the police is even stronger and the imaginary created by their antagonism crystallized into architecture seems to be even more relevant. As described in the part 1 of this research, architecture, through its usual codes (material, spatiality, aesthetics, etc.) attempts to disguise with more or less success the militarized function that these eight police stations clearly fulfill. A future study should show that police stations in Paris Western banlieues, where most of the wealthiest municipalities are located, drastically differ from this weaponized paradigm of the Northern banlieues, where live the most economic precarious populations partially constituted by a stigmatized Black and Arab youth.
