Si le Liban ne possède pas les impressionnantes calligraphies des mosquées du Maghreb ou d’Andalousie, il comptait néanmoins d’illustres maîtres comme Kamel el-Baba (1905-1991) et Nassib Makarem (1889-1971) connus à travers le monde arabe.
« Aujourd’hui, il y a moins de dix authentiques calligraphes au Liban », selon M. Baayoun.
Dans son modeste appartement du quartier populaire de Basta à Beyrouth, Salah el-Hafi, 80 ans, se souvient encore du jour où Kamel el-Baba, a remarqué son talent. « Avant, le calligraphe gagnait bien sa vie. Avec l’ordinateur, il ne lui reste plus rien », dit-il, perdu dans ses pensées.
