Épisode 1 : Quand les Anciens abattent leurs cartes
Imaginer le monde et se représenter la Terre n’est pas une évidence. Les cartes, #atlas ou autres n’ont pas toujours existé. Comment la cartographie s’est-elle développée de l’Antiquité au Moyen Âge ?
Comment imaginait-on la Terre avant l’invention de la mappemonde ? Jusqu’au VIe siècle avant J.-C., la description de l’espace terrestre était l’affaire des textes littéraires. Dans L’Iliade, Homère l’imaginait hors de toute théogonie : « un disque plat, entouré du fleuve Océan où de puissantes colonnes supportent le ciel ». Peu à peu, l’observation des astres se développe tout comme la géométrie, l’art de mesurer la Terre. La géographie se rationalise et la Terre peut être représentée dans sa globalité.
Claude #Ptolémée marque un tournant dans le savoir géographique. Mathématicien, astronome alexandrin du IIe siècle, sa Géographie apparaît comme une synthèse de près de huit cents ans de savoir grec. Il mêle le traité théorique, où il recense près de huit mille lieux grâce aux récits de voyageurs, à une approche mathématique. Chaque lieu se voit détaillé en fonction de ses latitude et longitude. Il propose de nouvelles méthodes de projection et de créations cartographiques qui vont constituer les fondements des sciences astronomiques et géographiques. Ses travaux se transmettent dans un cercle savant pour ensuite se diffuser plus largement à partir du XIVe siècle.
Qu’est-ce qui motive le dessin des premières cartes dans l’#Antiquité ? Quelle est la postérité de Ptolémée ? Comment se transmet le savoir géographique et quelles en sont ses réappropriations au Moyen Âge ?

In February 1580, Francisco Gali was headed across Mexico to the Pacific Ocean. A mariner and cartographer who’d crossed the Pacific more than once, he had been living in “New Spain,” as Europeans called that part of the world, and was likely on another official mission that would take him to Asia. To sail out, first he had to make his way down the country’s Atlantic coast to manage a narrower crossing to the Pacific. On his journey, he passed through the coastal towns of the east, where the mayors had a special request of him. Make us a map, they asked.

These stories have perhaps overshadowed other Stanford news of a more academic nature: the arrival of the David Rumsey Map Center, which celebrated its grand opening yesterday and continues the festivities today and tomorrow.

The search engine for historical maps
OldMapsOnline developed out of a love of history and heritage of old maps. The project began as a collaboration between Klokan Technologies GmbH, Switzerland and The Great Britain Historical GIS Project based at the University of Portsmouth, UK thanks to funding from JISC. Since January 2013 is the project improved and maintained by volunteers and the team of Klokan Technologies GmbH in their free time.

Technology
The website has been created by Klokan Technologies GmbH, specialists in online map publishing and in applications of open-source software. It aims to demonstrate a combination of tools for publishing historical maps with a focus on their easy accessibility for the general public. The core of the retrieval system is the MapRank Search software, developed originally for the Swiss Kartenportal.CH project. The web is optimised for search engines with GeoSEO powered by Linked Data, and it also exposes Structured Data (Schema.org microdata). The technology and expertise from this project can be applied on another projects on request.

La distinction entre l’ « étendue » et les « provinces réputées étrangères » avait pour origine le refus de certaines provinces de payer les aides qui avaient été établies par les États généraux, pour payer la rançon du roi Jean II dit le Bon, fait prisonnier lors de la bataille de Poitiers. Libéré à la suite du traité de Brétigny, Jean II décida, pour punir les provinces récalcitrantes, qu’elles seraient traitées comme étrangères et ajouta aux droits de rêve et de haut passage, établis respectivement en 1321 et 1324, un troisième droit de sortie : l’imposition foraine, en vertu de laquelle, toute marchandise venant des provinces où l’aide de 1360 avait cours, était frappée, à son entrée dans une des provinces réputées étrangères, d’un droit de sortie de douze deniers par livre, soit un sou par livre

With generous funding from the Indigo Trust, the British Library has started to catalogue and digitise a unique archive of military intelligence maps of British East Africa - a region encompassing modern-day Kenya, Uganda and neighbouring parts of South Sudan, Ethiopia and Somalia. The maps are held in the War Office Archive and were created by British intelligence officers, surveyors and cartographers between the years 1890-1940.

During this period the requirement to administer newly-created British protectorates in Africa brought with it the need for mapping of a new order in terms of volume, scale and subject matter. As a result, the archive represents both a milestone in the history of the cartography of Africa and a goldmine of historical information for the modern-day researcher.
The example below is finely executed in watercolours and coloured inks, and shows a region to the north and east of the Nile River in north-western Uganda. It was drawn in 1901, at a time when the area was under British administration within the Uganda Protectorate, and represents the first systematic survey of the area.

Ever been to the town of Agloe in New York State? Whitewall in California? Or Relescent in Florida?
While these towns are clearly marked on a number of antique maps of the United States, they don’t actually exist.
“Paper towns” were fake places added to maps by early mapmakers in order to dupe forgers into copying them, thereby exposing themselves to charges of copyright infringement.

Old Maps Online. C’est mon favori dans cette liste. Voici une porte d’entrée façon moteur de recherche qui va vous permettre de naviguer à travers des dizaines de bibliothèques à travers le monde pour y dénicher la carte ancienne que vous recherchez. Une interface graphique ludique et une ergonomie bien pensée en font un bon outil en ligne. L’utilisation est simple. Vous commencez par définir sur une mappe monde la zone que vous voulez explorer. Sous cette première carte globale, vous avez accès à un curseur du temps. Vous allez pouvoir remonter les années en glissant le curseur sur la période historique qui vous intéresse. À droite apparaissent alors les cartes historiques disponibles sous forme de vignettes. Un clic et vous allez directement sur la carte et sur le site où elle se trouve. Formidable. Historical Maps Work. Autre ressource intéressante qui nécessiterait cependant un petit coup de peinture graphique pour rafraichir une interface un peu vieillotte. Cette base de données n’en propose pas moins une bonne quantité de cartes anciennes sur les États-Unis et sur le monde. Elle offre aussi l’accès à des collections intéressantes de cartes du ciel et des étoiles ainsi qu’a des annuaires spécialisés. Lien : Historical Maps Work
David Rumsey Map Collection. Plutôt centré sur les États-Unis et l’Amérique du Sud, ce site propose également des vieilles cartes historiques de l’Europe, l’Asie et l’Afrique.
