Today many people would be lost without the interactive, highly mathematical GPS maps that we carry in our pockets. But entire traditions of mapmaking exist outside the norms of latitude and longitude, from routes drawn in sand to itineraries for early traders to topographical guides for the earliest hobby cyclists.
What inspired you to focus on maps that don’t rely on a grid system?
There is a Western tradition of mathematical mapping that undergirds digital wayfinding like what you have on your Google Maps. Other ways of saying this are Cartesian, universal, or Ptolemaic maps, from the ancient Greek mathematician who came up with the idea of placing an imaginary grid over the globe from which you could measure one point to another.

16th Century Historical Map by Urbano Monte Digitally Stitched Together

Cartography expert David Rumsey, together with his nephew, painstakingly joined together one of the world’s largest maps for the first time. For over 400 years, Urbano Monte’s color world map was spread out over 60 individual pages. Created just 95 years after the discovery of America, the 1587 rendering is one of the earliest world maps; and when placed together, it stretches out a little over 10 feet.
By digitally joining together Monte’s hand-drawn sheets, it’s even easier to appreciate the incredible details of the historical map. “Monte’s map reminds us of why historical maps are so important as primary resources: the north polar azimuthal projection of his planisphere uses the advanced scientific ideas of his time; the artistry in drawing and decorating the map embodies design at the highest level,” writes Rumsey. “And the view of the world then gives us a deep historical resource with the listing of places, the shape of spaces, and the commentary interwoven into the map. Science, art, and history all in one document.

Plus de 1600 cartes et infographies, issues des travaux de l’#Observatoire_des_territoires et de bien d’autres, sont désormais à disposition du grand public et des spécialistes, sur des thématiques aussi diverses que l’emploi, les services au public, l’industrie, les ruralités, le cadre de vie, les mobilités, etc. La recherche se fait par mot clé, ou à partir des quatre filtres proposés (par thème, par échelle de territoire, par série et par année). Les cartes sont toutes téléchargeables en haute définition. Enfin, le tout sera mis à jour et enrichi régulièrement pour satisfaire les besoins des professionnels et des amateurs de cartographie.

Valorisation du #Fonds_cartographique du Laboratoire de Graphique de l’#EHESS
Ce projet #PSL-EHESS s’inscrit dans le déploiement d’une Plateforme géomatique à l’EHESS qui vise à construire un référentiel de données géoréférencées pour le mettre à la disposition de la communauté scientifique dans une démarche d’ouverture des données et d’élaboration d’une #cartothèque patrimoniale numérique, en articulation avec le portail PSL-Explore.
L’ EHESS a souhaité valoriser les travaux produits par le #Laboratoire_de_Graphique créé par #Jacques_Bertin qui a acquis et produit, entre 1954 et 2000, plusieurs milliers de cartes. Celles-ci publiées au format papier ne sont, la plupart du temps, pas accessibles sous format numérique. Elles concernent la plupart des aires culturelles et des périodes (de la préhistoire à la période contemporaine) étudiées à l’ EHESS. Les archives du laboratoire ont été déposées en deux versements aux Archives Nationales (2001 et 2015). Elles regroupent les archives de fabrication des cartes, les notes de travail ainsi que certains des documents finalisés. Outre les cartes produites par le Laboratoire de Graphique, le fonds contient également plus de 2500 cartes topographiques acquises auprès de différents organismes (IGN, Orstom, services de cartographies étrangers…) et datant de la fin du XIXe siècle aux années 1990.
