JERUSALEM (Ma’an) — Israeli forces shot dead a Palestinian man on Sunday after he allegedly stabbed and injured an Israeli police officer near Damascus Gate in occupied East Jerusalem, an Israeli police spokesperson said.

Micky Rosenfeld said the alleged attacker was a 38-year-old Palestinian from Nablus district in the northern occupied West Bank. Local sources named him as Baseem Abdul-Rahman Mustafa Salah .

The Israeli police officer who was injured during the attack is reportedly in light to moderate condition, a Magen David Adom medical service spokesperson said.

Witnesses near the scene told Ma’an that Israeli police shot the Palestinian man at least 11 times during the incident, adding that Israeli forces did not allow medics to reach him.

  • What Drove a Popular Palestinian Girl to Attempt a Stabbing Attack? -
Gideon Levy and Alex Levac Nov 28, 2015 4:30 AM

A Palestinian teen who tried to stab an Israeli woman in the West Bank was run over and shot to death. Her father, imam of the refugee camp where she grew up, says his daughter was ’responding to the occupation.’

A memorial poster of Ashrakat Qattanani on the wall of the Askar refugee camp. ’If the Israelis want to live in peace and security, our children too must live in peace and security.’ Credit : Alex Levac

One can, of course, label a 16-year-old girl a “terrorist” and also justify, with unbelievable, knee-jerk insensitivity, the wild car-ramming and then the confirmation-of-kill that occurred immediately after her attack – the two bullets fired by a settler, and the two others by a soldier, into the body of the girl who was run over and lying injured on the road.

No one is questioning the fact that this past Sunday morning, the teenager Ashrakat Qattanani, wielding a knife, chased an Israeli woman at the Hawara junction, near Nablus, attempting to stab her. But we must ask what motivated the daughter of the imam from the Askar refugee camp to tell her father that she was going to school – where she was a good student and a popular girl – and then instead to go to the junction and try to stab an Israeli woman.

The next day, memorial posters were pasted in the narrow alleys of Askar, a crowded, desperately poor refugee camp on the southern outskirts of Nablus. But Qattanani’s funeral has not yet been held, because Israel hasn’t yet returned her body. (“That is something that takes time,” a Shin Bet security service officer told her father on the day of her death.)

On Monday traffic in the camp was slow and totally chaotic; only one car at a time can travel through the crowded streets here. Groups of young people huddled on street corners. Even this battle-weary camp hasn’t yet come to terms with the idea of a 16-year-old shahida (martyr).

Taha Qattanani, the girl’s father and the local imam, is an impressive man in a traditional robe and with a well-groomed beard. Speaking softly, he doesn’t try to conceal the fact that his daughter set out to stab Jews.

“Ashrakat responded to the occupation,” he says with self-control, hiding his emotions. Those are the emotions of a newly bereaved father who must face the loss of his daughter alone, because Israel continues to deny Ashrakat’s mother entry into the West Bank, even during the mourning period.

Such was the reality in which Ashrakat grew up and in which she went to her death. Her mother, Abala, 46, a Kuwaiti-born Palestinian, had been living with her family in the West Bank without a proper entry permit. In 2006, when Ashrakat was 4, Abala went to Jordan to visit her parents. Taha was being detained by Israel at the time for being active in Islamic Jihad.

Taha explains now that his wife went to Jordan in the wake of psychological pressure and a campaign of intimidation conducted against her by the Shin Bet in an effort to extract information about him. Her plan was to stay in Jordan until Taha was released from prison. That happened on the last day of 2007, but since then, Israel has refused to allow Abala to return home to her husband and what were, until Ashrakat’s death, their three children, even for a short visit.

Nine years without a mother. That is the lot of those who live in their own country, defying the law, the law of the occupation, and then are banned from returning after they’ve left it.

Until her father’s release, then, Ashrakat and her siblings were without either parent and resided with the family of her uncle, Yassin, her father’s brother.

Every summer the children went to Jordan to be with their mother. This past summer they were accompanied by their uncle Hassan, Taha’s brother, who speaks fluent Hebrew and is familiar with almost every residential building in the affluent Tel Aviv neighborhood of Ramat Aviv, some of which he renovated. He spent two months in Jordan with the Qattanani children.

This year Ashrakat was in the 11th grade in the Cordoba School in the old section of Askar, not far from the new camp, where her family lives. She’d already begun preparing for the first high-school matriculation exams. Her father shows us her photo on his cell phone, taken a few days before her death. She’s giving a sermon to the girls in the schoolyard, a white kerchief on her head, a sheet of paper in her hand, wearing the striped school uniform and using a microphone to be heard.

What happened to the 16-year-old on Sunday morning? She got up around 5 o’clock for the morning prayers, fed her cat and added water to the birdcage. She asked her father how he was doing; he had felt sick during the night. She left home after a quick breakfast, at about 7:30. She said nothing to him about her plans. Nor did anything in her behavior indicate what was about to happen, he says.

At around 9 o’clock, news spread in the camp that there had been a stabbing attempt at the Hawara junction by a local girl and that she had been run over by a settler and shot to death. Shortly afterward, a Shin Bet agent who called himself “Zechariah” phoned Taha Qattanani and instructed him to come to the army base at Harawa. The caller promised that he would not be arrested. Taha went with Hassan; he already understood that he was being summoned about his daughter. Zechariah told the two brothers what had happened and asked them to try and calm tensions in the refugee camp and not call for revenge. “We have to move on from these things,” the agent said.

The stunned father left immediately. Hassan stayed on to speak to the Shin Bet man. He says that the agent expressed regret over the incident. “He related that the girl had come to the junction that morning and tried to stab someone, and then the settler ran over her. She was knocked to the ground but got up and then was shot by settlers and soldiers,” Hassan says.

The settler who hit the teenager with his car was Gershon Mesika, the former head of the Samaria Regional Council, who was forced to resign from that post earlier this year after being suspected of corruption offenses involving the Yisrael Beiteinu party and turned state’s witness in the police investigation of the affair. This is not the first time Mesika, recipient of a 2012 national award from the Education Ministry on behalf of his regional council, has run over a Palestinian. In 2001, he hit a 90-year-old pedestrian but was acquitted of causing death by negligence.

In the meantime, Ashrakat’s mother, in Jordan, was given the news by phone. Here’s the last text message between mother and daughter – Taha reads it out from his cell phone: “What were you cooking?” Ashrakat asked. “We woke up in the morning from the noise of the army coming into the camp. The intifada is starting. I hope we get through this year safely,” she wrote her mother. Ashrakat concluded the correspondence with the parting words, “Salamu alaykum” – peace be upon you. That was on the eve of her death. As her father reads out his daughter’s last words to her mother, tears well up in his eyes for the first time. He quickly wipes them away.

In the past month, he tells us, Ashrakat spoke a great deal about her dream of praying at the Al-Aqsa mosque in Jerusalem. “The occupation prevented her from living with her mother, and the occupation also prevented her from praying at the holiest place for her in her country,” he says. She often watched television reports of the recent acts of stabbing and the killing of the assailants, he says.

“I will not beg the Israelis: If they want to live in peace and security, our children too must live in peace and security,” he says. Pointing to a soft-drink bottle on the table, he adds, “This bottle has a price.” The import of that comment is that the occupation, too, has a price.

Ashrakat’s uncle, Hassan, adds, “Since the Dawabsheh family in Duma was burned to death, all our children see on television what is going on – the terrorist behavior of the settlers and the army that supports them. No respect for women or the aged. The humiliation is so deep in the soul of every Palestinian. The way our women are pushed around at Al-Aqsa. Everyone starts to light a bonfire in his head, and that is not good for the Jews or for the Arabs. It’s one big bonfire.”

“You are deepening the hatred,” Khaled Abu Hashi, who lives in Askar, tells us. His son, Nur a-Din, stabbed a soldier to death in an attack at a Tel Aviv train station a year ago. He has not been allowed to visit him in prison even once, and is waiting for Israeli forces to demolish his home.

“I don’t care about the house, I care about the children who are growing up with all this,” he says. “As a father, I know what effect all these photographs have on our children. How will we live together with all this hatred?” Abu Hashi relates that he built and renovated “all of Ra’anana, from Kfar Sava to Kiryat Sharett,” and that, like most of the older people in the camp, he misses the old, beautiful days of friendship with the Jews.

A bus driver, Adham al-Sharfa, told Ma’an: “I saw what happened with my own eyes as Israeli soldiers opened fire at a youth for attempting to stab an Israeli soldier and then several Israeli soldiers arrived and shot the youth more than 10 times and he fell to the ground.”

Palestinian security sources said Samah was shot in the head while sitting inside her car near where the incident occurred.

Her injuries were reported as critical.

      http://www.pchrgaza.org/portal/en/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=11391:weekly-report-on-israel

At approximately 14:45, Israeli forces stationed at Hawarah checkpoint, south of Nablus, shot dead a Palestinian child who had crossed the checkpoint and was present at the intersection in front of a settler bus stop. Israeli forces claimed that the child had attempted to stab 2 settlers at the bust stop. However, investigations conducted by PCHR refuted the Israeli story, as the child went out of the checkpoint in front of Israeli soldiers. He was not carrying anything and the bust stop was empty then. The child was identified later as Alaa Khalil Hashash (16) , from new Askar refugee camp, northeast of Nablus. The gunfire resulted also in wounding Samah Abed al-Mo’men Ahmed Abdullah (18), from Amoriya village, southeast of the city. She sustained a bullet wound to the head, while sitting in her father’s car as they were going home from Nablus. At approximately 20:50, the aforementioned girl was transported by a Palestinian ambulance from Rafidya Hospital to Hawarah checkpoint to be then transported by an Israeli ambulance to Tel HaShomer Hospital in Israel.

Abed al-Mo’men Ahmed Abdullah, Samah’s father, said to PCHR’s fieldworker:
"At approximately 14:45 on Monday, 23 November 2015, I was driving my car with my wife Hala Ibrahim Abdullah (36) next to me and my children in the back seat: Ahmed (16), Hanin (17) and Samah (18). Samah was inbetween Ahmed and Hanin. We went out of Nablus heading to Amoriya village, southeast of the city. While getting out of Hawarah checkpoint, I entered the intersection area and saw a boy in blue sport outfit. He was not carrying anything. I thought he was a settler, but after I drove 20 meters ahead, right in front of a settler bus stop that was empty then, Israeli forces opened fire at the boy. He fell down before he reached the bus stop. They then opened fire from a watchtower and soldiers on the ground towards my car, as my car was the last one to cross the checkpoint. I lowered my head and then heard my son screaming, “Samah got killed”. I froze and Israeli soldiers gathered around us. A Palestinian ambulance arrived and took us to Rafidya Hospital, where my daughter was admitted to the operations room. She sustained a bullet wound to the forehead."

  • So These Are Israel’s New Heroes? -
    Gideon Levy Nov 21, 2015

Israel’s recent military operations in Palestinian hospitals are a blatant violation of the Geneva Convention, and make you wonder how low the country can sink.
    http://www.haaretz.com/opinion/.premium-1.687530

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=12&v=6DMFJry4xDk

This is the next step in our decline: the storming of hospitals and abducting patients from their beds. The undercover forces carry out another kind of war crime, clearly against the Geneva Convention, and Israelis applaud in wonder. Heroes overcoming the wounded and medical staff. Over the weekend, the current affairs show “Uvda” (“Fact”) disgustingly salivated in awe at their actions.

It’s not hard to imagine what would happen if a Palestinian terrorist were to break into an Israeli hospital, abduct a patient from his bed and kill the cousin who was nursing him. But when the police counterterrorism unit and Shin Bet security service do it, they are cheered here. Next time Israeli propagandists complain about the use Palestinians make of hospitals, they should be reminded of Makassed Hospital in East Jerusalem, Al-Ahli Hospital in Hebron, and the private hospital in Nablus, where our undercover heroes raided, confiscated, abducted and killed.

The first violent raid was at the end of last month in East Jerusalem. Dozens of armed police twice raided Makassed Hospital, looking for the medical file of a 15-year-old boy suspected of throwing a firebomb. The intrusion in Nablus followed a week later. Anybody who didn’t hear about it saw it on “Uvda,” which loves to cheer actions like these without asking too many questions about their legality, morality or necessity. The target was a wounded member of the cell that murdered Eitam and Na’ama Henkin at the beginning of October.

“Not a simple operation,” “Uvda” explained, as if discussing the bombing of a nuclear reactor site in Iran. The forces dressed up as people accompanying an injured man in a wheelchair.

“Did you know what room he was in?” the worshipful reporter asked the daring commander. “We knew,” the warrior replied. “And what bed?” “We knew.” Wow, way to go! “We had our weapons drawn,” the officer said, describing the heroism of Israel in its war against nurses and orderlies. For a moment, it looked as if the real purpose of the action was the television segment – which army magazine Bamahane would have been ashamed to publish in its very worst days.

But this record was broken with the storming of Al-Ahli. This time, at dawn, the forces raided, seeking a suspect in a stabbing. Rambo dressed up like an expectant mother – what a stroke of genius! And the objective was another wounded man pulled from his bed. On the way, as they say, they killed the man’s cousin, who was just coming out of the bathroom and tried to attack them, they said. It’s not clear how or if at all.

“Civilian hospitals organized to give care to the wounded and sick, the infirm and maternity cases, may in no circumstances be the object of attack but shall at all times be respected and protected by the Parties to the conflict” – Article 18, Geneva Convention, to which Israel is a signatory. And Article 19: “The protection to which civilian hospitals are entitled shall not cease unless they are used to commit, outside their humanitarian duties, acts harmful to the enemy ... The fact that sick or wounded members of the armed forces are nursed in these hospitals ... shall not be considered to be acts harmful to the enemy.”

This is crystal clear, but not in Israel, which thinks treaties and international law are very important but don’t apply to it; that it is a special case, a country that is fighting for its life in the face of the devil that also hides in hospitals. But this is precisely the reason why these treaties were formulated.

These are essentially acts of revenge, for show. The wanted individuals can be taken into custody after they recover, without violating the principle of the protection of hospitals and without creating anxiety among thousands of sick and injured people. Next thing we know, a new unit will be established for fighting in hospitals: maybe a specialist labor room unit, or a force that specializes in raiding the ICU (there are more nurses there).

Beyond the ridiculous and the moral pall, the question asked by the physician from Nablus, Dr. Samir Khayat, reverberates: “From your point of view, are they heroes?” Yes, Dr. Khayat, these are Israel’s heroes.

  • Israeli forces storm East Jerusalem hospital, seize medical records

JERUSALEM (Ma’an) — Israeli forces on Tuesday raided al-Makassed Hospital in the al-Tur neighborhood of occupied East Jerusalem and seized the medical file of one of its patients, a staff member told Ma’an.

The staff member said that “undercover” special units had stormed the hospital’s emergency department, demanding to see the file of a Palestinian they said was treated at the hospital several days before.

They said that they had permission from an Israeli court to take the file, and refused to leave until it was handed over.

An Israeli police spokesperson said he had no information of the incident.

Israeli forces have frequently stormed hospitals to seize medical records and detain patients.

At the beginning of the month, undercover forces, dressed as Palestinians, detained a Palestinian patient after storming al-Arabi Hospital in Nablus in the northern West Bank.

In mid-October, the Palestine Red Crescent Society also decried the actions of Israeli forces toward its medical staff.

The society said that Israeli forces had attacked its ambulance crews and detained Palestinian patients from inside ambulances. It said that the incidents were “a blatant violation” of international humanitarian law.

  • Euro-Med Monitor Calls on International Community to Halt Israel’s Extra-Judicial Executions

    Author: Euro-Med Monitor

Geneva- Israel is escalating practices of extrajudicial execution, warns the Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights Monitor. Israeli forces use firearms against civilians who pose no threat although it is often possible to detain them instead.

Video recordings of surveillance cameras in the central train station of Afula city showed Israel’s reckless disregard for lives as Israeli soldiers shot a Palestinian lady holding an Israeli ID, claiming that she attempted to stab a guard working in the station, while the recordings clearly showed that the woman did not attempt to attack anybody.

Eyewitnesses told a Euro-Med Monitor team that Israa’ Abed, 29, was very scared and got panicked when she found herself surrounded by a group of Israeli soldiers who were directly pointing their weapons at her. The soldiers shouted asking her to take off her head scarf and drop her bag. The woman refused, raised her hands, and begged them not to shoot.

“Even if the woman tried to attack someone, the Israeli police could detain her instead of shooting her with four live bullets” said Ihsan Adel, Euro-Med Monitor legal adviser.

In another incident, an Israeli police officer shot dead Tha’er Abughazaleh from Jerusalem after he stabbed an Israeli soldier and three other Israelis causing minor injuries to them. Israeli police declared that the man was shot while being chased by Israeli soldiers. However, photos showed that the man was shot directly in the head and the bullet was right near his head on the ground, which reveals that he was killed on purpose.

On Sunday, October 4, 2015, an Israeli police force shot dead Fadi Samir Mustafa Elwan, 19, from the village of Issawiya near Jerusalem, under the pretext that he stabbed a 15-year-old Israeli boy. Eyewitnesses told Euro-Med Monitor that a group of Israeli settlers chased Elwan when he was walking in Masrara area in Jerusalem at the same time Israeli settlers gathered protesting the killing of two Israeli settlers earlier in the morning. Apparently, when the settlers saw Elwan, they attempted to attack him before he ran to Haim Barlev street. An Israeli police car arrived at the scene shooting seven live bullets towards the boy. Video recordings shared on Israeli websites showed Israeli settlers chasing Elwan and attacking him in the Almasserarh area before beating and dragging his body after he was killed.

Hadil Alhashlamoun, 18, from Hebron, was also killed at an Israeli checkpoint, known as Checkpoint 56, where Palestinians are banned from passing, except for those who live in that area. The Israeli authorities claimed that the teen was shot when the soldiers knew she was carrying a weapon and asked her to stop and drop it while the girl continued walking before the soldiers fired live bullets towards the ground near her and she raised a knife. The soldiers immediately shot her in the chest and legs, according to Shaarey Tzedeq hospital where she was transferred.
However, photos taken by an international volunteer, who was present at the scene, and testimonies of eyewitnesses, including Fawwaz Abueisha who live in Tal Rmeidah near the checkpoint, showed that the teen posed no threat to the Israeli soldiers who dropped her bag and shot her in the left leg before she fell and dropped a knife she was hiding. While the soldiers could detain her as she did not move, one of thrm shot her again in the right leg, approached and shot her several times in the chest and belly before he stopped for a moment and shot another bullet in her chest.
Although an Israeli surveillance camera recorded the incidents, the Israeli authorities refused to publish the video, which confirms the fact that the girl posed no threat before being killed.

Such acts constitute a violation of the Principles on the effective prevention and investigation of extra-legal, arbitrary and summary executions (ECOSOC Principles), which were endorsed by the General Assembly of the United Nations on December 15,1989, and state that firearms may not be used against persons except in the case of self-defence or the defence of others against an imminent threat of death or serious injury, to prevent the perpetration of a particularly serious crime involving a grave threat to life, or to arrest a person presenting such a danger and resisting the law enforcement official’s authority or to prevent his/her escape. In addition, the Code of Conduct for Law Enforcement Officials adopted by the General Assembly “emphasizes that the use of force by law enforcement officials should be exceptional; while it implies that law enforcement officials may be authorized to use force as is reasonably necessary under the circumstances for the prevention of crime or in effecting or assisting in the lawful arrest of offenders or suspected offenders, no force going beyond that may be used.”

Israeli forces violated these articles not only in the aforementioned incidents, but also on Monday, August 17, when the Israeli border police killed Muhammed Bassam Amsha, 25, from Kafr Ra’i in the district of Jenin, as he was passing the Zaatara checkpoint, in the north of Nablus. While the Israeli police claimed that Amsha was carrying a knife and attempted to stab an Israeli soldier, eyewitnesses confirmed that they did not see any knives with the man. On the following day, Israeli forces stormed the house of Amsha claiming that they had photos showing him carrying a knife before being shot dead. However, when his father asked to see the photos, the Israeli officer refused.

Moreover, on Thursday, July 23, Israeli forces killed Falah Hamdi Zamel Abumaria, 53, from the village of Beit Amr in Hebron. The soldiers stormed his house to detain his son who they shot first causing his father to panic and throw a pottery vase at the soldiers from his balcony. The soldiers responded by firing three live bullets at his chest. The Israeli authorities claim that the family refused to hand their son and attacked the soldiers before they responded by shooting him.
According to Haidar Abumaria, Falah’s son, the soldiers beat the father as soon as they arrived at the house before they shot his son, Muhammed with two live bullets, critically injuring him. The father then started cursing the soldiers and asking them to leave the house when they shot him in the chest and prevented ambulances from reaching the place before he died.

A serious investigation must be opened into the aforementioned incidents, according to the Geneva Conventions and the Principles on the Effective Prevention and Investigation of Extra-legal, Arbitrary and Summary Executions which state that "there shall be thorough, prompt and impartial investigation of all suspected cases of extra-legal, arbitrary and summary executions.

The Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights Monitor calls on the Israeli authorities to open a real and transparent and investigation into the aforementioned incidents, and to bring the perpetrators to justice. Ignoring such incidents would give people the green light to perpetrate more crimes in complete disregard for lives. Moreover, the organization calls on the states parties to the Geneva Convention to take concrete steps in pressuring Israel to comply with international law and respect the right to life.

BETHLEHEM (Ma’an) — Fourteen Palestinians have been killed by Israeli forces and around 1,000 injured with live and rubber-coated steel bullets in the occupied West Bank and Gaza Strip since Oct. 1, the Palestinian Ministry of Health said Friday.

By the end of the day on Friday alone, seven Palestinians were killed and around 200 injured with live and rubber-coated steel bullets, while seven suffered from bruises after being physically assaulted by Israeli forces in clashes across the West Bank and Gaza Strip.

According to the ministry, the numbers include those who were admitted to hospitals, while hundreds of others were treated on the scene.

In the Gaza Strip, six Palestinians were killed and 145 others injured by the end of the day as Israeli military forces opened fire at a demonstration by the border fence east of Gaza City and near Khan Younis, the ministry said.

In Hebron, Mohammad Al-Jabari,19, was killed after allegedly stabbing an Israeli border police officer and 11 were injured, three with live bullets in the feet, the rest with rubber-coated steel bullets. One of the latter was hit in the head and taken to Yatta hospital.

In ongoing clashes near the Beit El settlement in the Ramallah district, eight people were injured with live bullets and 22 with rubber-coated steel bullets, according to the ministry. Four those injured are currently in serious condition.

As clashes persisted in Bethlehem, five were injured with rubber-coated steel bullets and one with live bullet in the foot, the ministry said.

Three Palestinians were injured with live bullets in the stomach and feet in clashes in Kafr Qaddum near Qalqiliya, and six others were beaten up by Israeli forces and settlers in Beit Furik in Nablus, one of them suffering fractures to the head.

In Jenin, nine were injured with live bullets to the feet and two with rubber-coated steel bullets, including one Palestinian who was hit in the neck.

Another Palestinian suffered several bruises and fractures after being beaten up by Israeli forces in Jericho, the ministry added.

According to Ma’an reports, eight of those killed since the beginning of the month have been shot by Israeli forces during demonstrations and clashes, including a 13-year-old boy. The majority of the others were killed during alleged stabbing attacks and are below the age of twenty.

Four Israelis have been killed during the same time period, two of whom were Israeli settlers.

      http://www.aurdip.fr/l-universite-de-birzeit-demande.html

  • Red Crescent declares ’state of emergency’ after attacks on staff

    http://www.maannews.com/Content.aspx?id=767977

BETHLEHEM (Ma’an) — The Palestine Red Crescent Society on Sunday declared a state of emergency across the occupied Palestinian territory following an upsurge in violence by Israeli soldiers and settlers, including 14 attacks on the society’s ambulances in just three days.

The society said in a statement that it was declaring a level 3 state of emergency and putting all its staff, teams and volunteers on standby.

The society decried Israeli violations of international humanitarian law, saying that over 72 hours, it had faced 14 attacks against its staff and vehicles “in a serious escalation of violations against PRCS, its teams and the humanitarian services they render.”

Most recently, the statement said that Israeli soldiers attacked one of the society’s ambulances while tending to injured Palestinians during clashes in front of al-Quds university’s Abu Dis campus earlier on Sunday.

Two days earlier, the statement said that Israeli forces attacked an ambulance in al-Issawiya village in occupied East Jerusalem, before they “proceeded to arrest an injured Palestinian from inside the ambulance.”

Separately on Friday, the windshield of another ambulance was smashed by settlers in Burin village in Nablus, preventing it from “discharging its humanitarian duty.”

The society said that on Saturday, five paramedics “were beaten up by soldiers in Jerusalem,” while Israeli forces also attacked an ambulance crew with batons in Jerusalem’s Old City.

QALQILIYA (Ma’an) — A suspected Israeli settler shot and critically injured a 6-year-old Palestinian near the occupied West Bank city of Qalqiliya, relatives said.

Yousef Bayan al-Tabib was standing on the side of the road when the settler reportedly stopped his car, shot the child in the stomach, and fled the scene, relatives of the boy told Ma’an.

The child, from the small Palestinian village of Izbeit at-Tabib — in Area C and around six miles east of Qalqiliya — was taken to the Qalqiliya Hospital for treatment.

An Israeli army spokesperson told Ma’an that the army had received reports of the attack and that Israeli forces had arrived on scene and were “investigating any indication that the attack happened.”

The occupied West Bank was rocked by settler attacks on Palestinians and their property on Thursday night and Friday after a fatal shooting attack was carried out by alleged Palestinian gunmen.

The attack left Israeli settlers Eitam and Naama Henkin dead in their car as they were driving in the Nablus area of the northern West Bank.

NABLUS (Ma’an) — Israeli settlers set fire to dozens of olive trees on Palestinian agricultural land near the Nablus village of Burin on Friday as tensions remain high in the occupied West Bank following the killing of two settlers and reprisal attacks on Palestinian villages.

A Burin village committee member told Ma’an that a large group of settlers torched dozens of olive trees on land belonging to Um Ayman Sufian and attempted to set fire to her home.

A local guard committee set up by villagers to ward off attacks managed to prevent the settlers from burning the house.

Mahmoud Musleh, director of public relations in the Palestinian Civil Defense, said that firemen managed to extinguish the fire before it reached other homes in the village.

Settlers also set fire to land east of Burin village, he added.

In the nearby town of Huwwara, settlers set fire to dozens of dunams of agricultural land, a spokesperson from Fatah said. Awad Najm said firefighters were en route to the scene.

SALFIT (Ma’an) — Three Palestinian medics were injured on Friday as Israeli settlers attacked an ambulance travelling from Nablus to Salfit, medical staff said.

Dr. Issa al-Imla from the Salfit governmental hospital told Ma’an that Dr. Samel al-Att, nurse Murad al-Qatuni, and anesthetist Samer Habash were injured when settlers threw rock at the ambulance near Kfar Tappuah settlement in eastern Salfit.

The ambulance was damaged and suffered a flat tire after the driver was forced off the main road by the stone-throwing.

Hundreds of Israeli settlers have carried out multiple attacks on Palestinian homes and vehicles since Thursday night in the aftermath of an earlier shooting which killed two settlers near Nablus.

Another ambulance was damaged by settlers in Nablus overnight, as Palestinian vehicles were set ablaze in both Nablus and Ramallah.

The ambulance was reportedly en-route to aid Palestinians suffering from tear-gas inhalation when settlers attacked it, damaging the windshield.

The occupied West Bank, especially the Nablus area, has been on virtual lock down since Eitam and Naama Henkin, both in their 30s, were shot by suspected Palestinian gunmen while driving on Thursday night between the illegal settlements of Itamar and Elon More.

NABLUS (Ma’an) — A Palestinian shot and critically injured by Israeli forces at a military checkpoint in eastern Nablus last week died from his wounds on Thursday, medics said.

Medical sources told Ma’an that Ahmad Izzat Khatatbeh , 26, died from his wounds after being shot three times in the shoulder, chest and abdomen at the Beit Furik checkpoint last Friday.

An Israeli army spokesperson said at the time that a petrol bomb was thrown at an Israeli army patrol in the area, near the illegal settlement of Itamar, with soldiers responding by shooting a Palestinian suspect and arresting another.

Khatatbeh’s death comes a day after mourners marched en masse during the funeral of 18-year-old Hadeel al-Hashlamon , who was shot dead by Israeli forces on Wednesday at a Hebron checkpoint.

Hadeel’s death had followed that of another Palestinian who was killed in a village outside Hebron by an explosive device he intended to throw at a military vehicle, the army said.

Some residents provided a similar account of the man’s death, while Palestinian security officials said the man, whom they identified as Dia al-Talahmeh, 21 , had been shot dead by Israeli forces.

Khatatbeh’s death Thursday brings the total number of Palestinians killed by Israeli forces since the start of 2015 to 26, according to UN documentation.

The number does not include Palestinian deaths caused by Israeli settlers.

Also contributing to the chaos is Fatah’s leader in the Gaza Strip, Mohammed Dahlan, who enjoys influence in the West Bank through his alliance with Shakaa and Tirawi. Dahlan has financial resources that allow him to buy loyalties within Fatah.

This negatively affects the refugee camps in Nablus, especially the Balata camp. Fatah’s armed wing, Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades, has been intervening in the camps and leading armed clashes since early this year. The brigades are affiliated with the parties to the conflict, and they and unidentified parties exchange accusations and threats.

  • Israeli Terrorists, Born in the U.S.A. - The New York Times
By SARA YAEL HIRSCHHORNSEPT. 4, 2015

    http://www.nytimes.com/2015/09/06/opinion/sunday/israeli-terrorists-born-in-the-usa.html?smid=tw-share&_r=0

Jerusalem — ON July 31, in the West Bank village of Duma, 18-month-old Ali Dawabsheh was burned alive in a fire. All available evidence suggests that the blaze was a deliberate act of settler terrorism. More disturbingly, several of the alleged instigators, currently being detained indefinitely, are not native-born Israelis — they have American roots.

But there has been little outcry in their communities. Settler rabbis and the leaders of American immigrant communities in the West Bank have either played down their crime or offered muted criticism.

It’s worth recalling the response of the former prime minister Yitzhak Rabin to another heinous attack two decades ago, when an American-born doctor, Baruch Goldstein, gunned down dozens of Palestinians while they prayed in Hebron.

“He grew in a swamp whose murderous sources are found here, and across the sea; they are foreign to Judaism, they are not ours,” thundered Mr. Rabin before the Knesset in February 1994. “You are a foreign implant. You are an errant weed. Sensible Judaism spits you out.”

The shocking 1994 massacre was, at the time, the bloodiest outbreak of settler terrorism Israelis and Palestinians had ever seen. Less than two years later, Mr. Rabin himself would be dead, felled by an ultranationalist assassin’s bullet.

Suddenly, a group of American Jewish immigrants that had existed on the fringes of society became a national pariah. A former president of Israel, Chaim Herzog, labeled the United States “a breeding ground” for Jewish terror; the daily newspaper Maariv castigated American Jews who “send their lunatic children to Israel.” One Israeli journalist even demanded “operative steps against the Goldsteins of tomorrow” by banning the immigration of militant American Jews.

    But tomorrow has arrived.

After years of impunity for settlers who commit violent crimes, Israel’s internal security agency, the Shin Bet, has now supposedly cracked down by rounding up a grand total of four youths believed to be connected to recent acts of settler terrorism — three of whom trace their origins to the United States.

The agency’s “most wanted” Jewish extremist is 24-year-old Meir Ettinger, who has an august pedigree in racist and violent circles. He is a grandson of Meir Kahane, a radical American rabbi who in 1971 immigrated to Israel, established the Kach party and served as its lone Knesset member until it was banned in 1988. (Kahane was assassinated in New York in 1990, but his career laid the groundwork for ultranationalist and antidemocratic parties in Israel.)

Another is Mordechai Meyer, 18, from the settlement of Maale Adumim outside Jerusalem. He is the son of American immigrants who claimed he simply wanted to study the Torah and have an adventure in the West Bank. Another American settler, Ephraim Khantsis, was detained for threatening Shin Bet agents in court. The fourth, Eviatar Slonim, is the child of Australian Jews.

Mr. Ettinger, Mr. Meyer and Mr. Khantsis join a long list of settler extremists with American roots. A Brooklyn-born settler, Era Rapaport, played a prominent role in the car-bombing of the mayor of Nablus in 1980. In 1982, a Baltimore transplant, Alan Goodman, opened fire at the Dome of the Rock, killing two Palestinians and wounding 11. That same year, a former Brooklynite, Yoel Lerner, was jailed for leading a movement to overthrow the Israeli government and blow up the Temple Mount.

These days, rabbis like the St. Louis-born Yitzhak Ginsburg, who heads a yeshiva in the radical settlement of Yizhar, are inculcating the next generation.

Today, according to American government sources and several other studies, an estimated 12 to 15 percent of settlers (approximately 60,000 people) hail from the United States. This disproportionately large American contingent — relative to the total number of American-Israelis — has joined secular, religious and ultra-Orthodox Israelis, and other more recent immigrants. Few of them live in extremist hilltop outposts; a majority live in suburbanized settlements near Jerusalem, but they are considered among the most highly ideological.

RATHER than quoting the Bible or rhapsodizing about a messianic vision, they tend to describe their activities in the language of American values and idealism — as an opportunity to defend human rights and live in the “whole land of Israel” — often over a cup of Starbucks coffee in their boxy aluminum prefab houses or in the mansions of settlement suburbia. To them, living in the West Bank is pioneering on the new frontier; it’s merely an inconvenience that they’re often staking their claims on private Palestinian land. And for a fanatical fringe among them, this Wild West analogy has extended to indiscriminate violence.

  • Israeli forces shoot dead Palestinian at southern Nablus checkpoint

NABLUS (Ma’an) — Israeli troops shot dead a young Palestinian man in the northern West Bank on Monday after he allegedly attempted to stab an Israeli Border Police officer, the Israeli army said.

An Israeli army spokeswoman alleged that the Palestinian man approached Israeli Border Police officers at Tappuah junction, known to Palestinians as Zaatara military checkpoint, asking for “medical assistance.”

The spokeswoman said that he then pulled out a knife and attempted to stab an Israeli officer.

She said that he struggled with the officer, before other officers opened fire on him.

The spokeswoman confirmed that he had been killed. She added that the police officer was lightly injured.

Palestinian witnesses said that Israeli forces closed the checkpoint to traffic as large numbers of troops deployed in the area.

Palestinian security sources told Ma’an that the victim did not have an identity card on him.

They said that Israeli forces took his body to a nearby military base in Huwwara.

They said that the body would be delivered to his family after he is identified.
