La Knesset approuve la clause controversée de la nouvelle loi qui autorise Netanyahu à lancer des opérations militaires de masse en ne consultant que le ministre de la Défense

Le Parlement israélien a voté lundi en faveur d’une loi permettant au Premier ministre et au ministre de la Défense de décider d’entrer en guerre sans réunir le gouvernement, sur fond de tensions croissantes entre Israël et certains de ses voisins.

Cette loi, votée à 62 voix contre 41, donne la responsabilité au cabinet restreint de sécurité de décider d’une opération militaire ou d’une guerre sans se concerter avec le reste du gouvernement.

Mais un paragraphe précise qu’en cas de « conditions extrêmes », le Premier ministre et son ministre de la Défense, seuls, pourront décider d’une telle opération.

La loi ne précise pas quelles sont exactement ces « conditions extrêmes », ou qui les déterminera, en indiquant seulement que la décision s’appliquera, « si la question est nécessaire en raison de l’urgence ».

Le projet de loi initié par la ministre de la Justice Ayelet Shaked est un amendement d’une loi fondamentale qui, auparavant, donnait au gouvernement uniquement la possibilité de décider de lancer une opération militaire avec la présence de la majorité des ministres.

Présenté par Netanyahu depuis l’année dernière – le projet avait été rejeté plus tôt dans la journée par les membres de deux comités clés de la Knesset : Droit et Justice, et Affaires étrangères et Défense. Il a toutefois été soumis à nouveau par Avi Dichter, membre du Likud et président de la Commission des Affaires étrangères et de la Défense, lors des deuxième et troisième lectures d’un amendement plus large et a été voté dans ce cadre législatif plus large.

Cet amendement plus large permet au gouvernement de déléguer le pouvoir de déclarer la guerre dans des circonstances normales, ou de se mobiliser pour une opération militaire majeure, à un forum composé « d’au moins la moitié » de tous les ministres du Cabinet.

Il y a environ huit ans, Netanyahu et Ehud Barak, alors ministre de la Défense, avaient chargé le chef d’état-major et le chef du service de renseignement du Mossad de placer l’armée en état d’urgence, mais ces derniers lui ont répondu que cela était illégal car cette action n’avait pas été dûment approuvée et pouvait mener à la guerre.

Cependant, à de nombreuses occasions, des décisions de même nature ont été prises par le seul Cabinet de sécurité, un petit groupe de ministres chargé d’élaborer des politiques en matière de guerre et de paix, ou d’autres petits groupes de ministres.

Onze ministres sont membres du cabinet restreint de sécurité actuel sur les 22 ministres qui composent le gouvernement Netanyahu.

Un comité créé en 2016 sous la direction d’un ancien conseiller à la sécurité nationale, le major-général Yaakov Amidror, pour examiner le fonctionnement du cabinet de sécurité et la manière dont il informe et met à jour les ministres a recommandé de mettre la loi en conformité avec ce qu’il a dit être devenu la « pratique normale ». En juin de l’année dernière, le cabinet a voté en faveur d’une modification de la loi.

Ayelet Shaked a justifié l’amendement en expliquant devant le Parlement que « dans la situation sécuritaire actuelle, il faut pouvoir rendre plus efficace le travail du gouvernement et du Cabinet ».

Deux députés de l’opposition – Omer Bar Lev de l’Union sioniste, officier de réserve de l’armée israélienne ayant le grade de colonel et ancien commandant de l’unité d’élite Sayeret Matkal, et Ofer Shelah de Yesh Atid, commandant de compagnie de la Brigade de parachutistes de réserve qui a perdu un œil pendant la guerre du Liban de 1982 – ont averti les comités que le libellé de la nouvelle législation pourrait permettre au Premier ministre d’exclure les députés opposés à une opération militaire et de soumettre une telle opération à un vote en l’absence de ces derniers.

Ils ont également déclaré que permettre au Premier ministre et au ministre de la Défense de décider quand une situation est considérée comme « conditions extrêmes » leur donnerait le plein pouvoir de déclencher une guerre sans aucun contrôle.

Shelah a ensuite accusé les membres de la coalition d’avoir voté « contre leurs propres opinions, en matière de vie et de mort » à cause de la pression exercée par Netanyahu.

« Le mépris de Netanyahu pour tous ceux qui l’entourent et pour tout ce que nous avons appris au cours de nos nombreuses guerres a pris le pas sur la considération de nombreux membres compétents et expérimentés de la Knesset », a-t-il dit.

L’Institut israélien pour la démocratie a soumis une série de réserves aux commissions au sujet du projet de loi, notamment en exigeant l’approbation du Premier ministre, du vice-Premier ministre et des ministres de plusieurs ministères clés et en suggérant de définir les activités militaires qui nécessitent l’approbation du Cabinet et celles qui ne le sont pas. Aucune des recommandations de l’institut n’a été acceptée.

Bien qu’ils se soient opposés sans succès au projet de loi à la Knesset, les partis d’opposition ont déclaré lundi soir au Times of Israel qu’il n’y avait aucun projet de recours contre le projet de loi devant la Haute Cour.

Cette loi est votée dans un contexte de tensions avec les Palestiniens alors que, depuis le 30 mars, des manifestations dans la bande de Gaza, le long de la frontière avec Israël, ont donné lieu à des affrontements avec les forces israéliennes dans lesquels 45 Palestiniens auraient été tués.

Par ailleurs, le ministre israélien de la Défense Avigdor Liberman a averti jeudi que son pays s’en prendrait à toute tentative d’“implantation militaire” iranienne en Syrie, après une attaque dans ce pays le 9 avril attribuée à l’Etat hébreu.

Tout en veillant à ne pas se laisser entraîner dans le conflit syrien, Israël a mené des attaques contre des positions du régime syrien ou des convois d’armes présentés comme provenant d’Iran et destinés au groupe terroriste chiite libanais du Hezbollah qui soutient le président syrien Bashar el-Assad.

Le Premier ministre japonais Shinzo Abe a rejeté mardi un transfert de l’ambassade de son pays à Jérusalem, comme l’ont annoncé les Etats-Unis, lors d’une rencontre avec le président palestinien Mahmoud Abbas à Ramallah en Cisjordanie occupée, a indiqué l’agence palestinienne Wafa.

M. Abe, qui effectue une tournée au Moyen Orient, a assuré au président Abbas que son pays n’avait pas l’intention de suivre l’exemple des Etats-Unis, qui ont décidé de transférer le 14 mai leur ambassade de Tel Aviv à Jérusalem, ce qui a provoqué la colère des Palestiniens, a ajouté Wafa. M. Abe a réaffirmé le soutien de son pays à la création d’un Etat palestinien indépendant dans le cadre d’une solution de deux Etats, a également indiqué Wafa.

Prague - Le ministère tchèque des Affaires étrangères a annoncé mercredi la réouverture en mai du consulat honoraire à Jérusalem, tandis que le président Milos Zeman a réitéré à cette occasion son souhait que Prague déplace dans cette ville son ambassade, actuellement à Tel Aviv.

Mais ce souhait ne pourrait être réalisé que si le gouvernement tchèque l’approuve, ce qui n’est pas acquis.

« La République tchèque a décidé d’ouvrir en mai un consulat honoraire à Jérusalem Ouest et avant la fin de l’année un Centre tchèque, également à Jérusalem Ouest », a déclaré le ministère, dans un communiqué.

Cette décision « n’a aucune influence sur l’accord final concernant Jérusalem », « La République tchèque respecte pleinement la position commune de l’Union européenne qui considère Jérusalem comme la future capitale des deux Etats, c’est-à-dire de l’Etat d’Israël et du futur Etat de Palestine », poursuit-il.

Ouvert au début des années 1990, le consulat honoraire tchèque à Jérusalem avait été fermé en 2016, en raison du décès du consul honoraire, a précisé à l’AFP la porte-parole du ministère tchèque, Michaela Lagronova.

Le président Zeman, connu pour ses positions pro-israéliennes, a redit mercredi soir qu’il voudrait voir l’ambassade de son pays transférée à Jérusalem.

« Je me souviens d’une rencontre avec le (Premier ministre d’Israël) Benjamin Netanyahu. Il m’a dit : si vous le faites (le transfert de l’ambassade à Jérusalem, ndlr), je vous donnerai ma propre maison », a affirmé M. Zeman, au cours d’une cérémonie organisée au Château de Prague, à l’occasion du 70e anniversaire de la création de l’Etat hébreu. The Supreme Court ruled Tuesday that thousands of victims of terrorist attacks overseas cannot sue a foreign bank under a U.S. law dating from the 1700s.

By a 5-4 vote, the court refused to revive lawsuits, dismissed by the lower courts, that sought to hold Arab Bank, which is headquartered in Jordan, responsible for attacks against foreign nationals in the Middle East. More than 6,000 survivors and relatives of those killed in the West Bank and Gaza claimed that officials of the bank were complicit in the attacks.

Beginning in 2004, the victims filed a series of lawsuits accusing the bank of helping to finance Hamas and other terror organizations. The legal action was filed in the U.S. and aimed at Arab Bank through its branch in New York. The lead plaintiff in the case before the Supreme Court, Joseph Jesner, lost his 19-year-old son to a suicide bombing in Tel Aviv.

El secretario general del partido español Podemos, Pablo Iglesias, pedirá este lunes mediante una carta al ministro de Asuntos Exteriores, Alfonso Dastis, que condene las injerencias del embajador del régimen de Israel en los asuntos internos de España.

“Nos parece gravísimo que un embajador se meta en la política interior de un país con intereses políticos (… Iglesias) solicitará amparo ante hechos intolerables”, ha anunciado la portavoz de Podemos, Noelia Vera, en una rueda de prensa tras la reunión de la dirección del partido.

Vera ha hecho las declaraciones después de que Daniel Kutner, el representante diplomático israelí en España, acusó el pasado martes a los diputados de Podemos de practicar una “política sistemática de boicot” contra Israel.

Kutner lanzó esa acusación luego de que los dirigentes de Podemos cancelaran el mismo martes una reunión con él en protesta por la violenta represión de las marchas palestinas por el régimen de Tel Aviv en la Franja de Gaza, que ha provocado una gran oleada de críticas en el mundo debido a la elevada cifra de muertos y heridos entre los palestinos.

Israeli jet fighters appeared over the skies of central Israel Thursday, alarming citizens as they circled low amid rising tensions in the Middle East, in what was later revealed to be an unannounced flyover rehearsal for Israel’s Independence Day celebrations. The army later appologized for causing the scare.

During the flyover, Israeli jets fired flares from a system designed to counter anti-aircraft missiles. For a layman watching, these could seem like missile fire from the fighter jets.

The IDF usually notifies the public regarding training drills involving increased military activity.

Calls from concerned Tel Aviv residents poured into police hotlines, prompting the Israeli Defense Forces to clarify it was a training drill. Many Israelis went on social media and criticized the fact that there was no early notice in the media - particulalry in light of Iran’s recent threats to exact revenge on Israel for the strike in Syria.

1. Israel’s killings were premeditated.

2. Israeli violence had nothing to do with “security.”

3. There were no “clashes.”
Again, I defer to Israeli propaganda. How many injuries to Israeli soldiers have even been claimed in the tsunami of apologetics pouring out of Tel Aviv this week? Zero. How much damage to Israeli property? Zero. How many Israeli civilians threatened? Zero. How many breaches in that precious “security fence”? Zero.

4. Israel targeted its victims for political reasons.
And yes, Virginia, there is a name for that sort of lethal conduct: the name is terrorism. Israel directed deliberate, deadly violence at Gaza’s civilians with the express goal of intimidating potential dissenters. It requires astonishing #chutzpah for the orchestrators of terrorism on such a scale to accuse their victims of being terrorists. But chutzpah is one thing Israel seldom lacks.

5. Israel commits its crimes because the U.S. lets it.
Like other bullies, Israel fights only where it cannot lose.

6. Mainstream media, and Jewish organizations, assist in the cover-up.
The proliferation of apologetics in mainstream media for Israel’s deadly violence has been so instantaneous, and so nauseating, that I will only sample the field briefly. Sticking to the liberal end of the spectrum, one finds Ha’aretz‘s #Amos_Harel lamenting that “Hamas…has found a more effective way of creating friction with the #Israel Defense Forces than firing rockets and carrying out attacks through its tunnels.” (How nasty of those Palestinians to get themselves killed just to ruin the mornings of some IDF brass!) In fact, Harel notes, the Gazans have proved so treacherous that “despite the large number of Palestinian casualties not a single rocket has been fired into Israel from the Strip.” What’s a besieger to do? The more lopsided its violence, the easier it is to hurt poor Israel’s feelings.

7. Israel’s #crimes will continue until we make it stop.

“Nothing New” is recordings Gil and I made in New York of songs he chose from his catalogue, just voice and piano, pure Gil. I realised that each song he had chosen was from a different album of his. He had carefully curated the selection, so the album serves as an excellent introduction to his previous output.

In our early letters, Gil had picked up on my use of the word “spartan” to describe how our record could be. The Oxford dictionary defines “spartan” as showing “indifference to comfort or luxury”. Very Gil. “Nothing New” is truly spartan in that it is utterly sparse and devoid of anything that is not completely necessary. All it contains is Gil’s singing and piano playing.

Once I’d compiled and edited these songs, I made three acetates, and we screenprinted artwork at XL. I gave one of these three special copies to Gil’s son Rumal Rackley, sent another to Gil’s friend and keyboard player Kim Jordan in Washington DC, and the third went to Ms Mimi, who kept Gil’s house in order. This could have been the end of the process, but Rumal felt we should share this work with people - so here it is.

In 2001, Scott-Heron was sentenced to one to three years imprisonment in a New York State prison for possession of cocaine. While out of jail in 2002, he appeared on the Blazing Arrow album by Blackalicious. He was released on parole in 2003, the year BBC TV broadcast the documentary Gil Scott-Heron: The Revolution Will Not Be Televised—Scott-Heron was arrested for possession of a crack pipe during the editing of the film in October 2003 and received a six-month prison sentence.

On July 5, 2006, Scott-Heron was sentenced to two to four years in a New York State prison for violating a plea deal on a drug-possession charge by leaving a drug rehabilitation center. He claimed that he left because the clinic refused to supply him with HIV medication. This story led to the presumption that the artist was HIV positive, subsequently confirmed in a 2008 interview. Originally sentenced to serve until July 13, 2009, he was paroled on May 23, 2007.

In 2010, Scott-Heron was booked to perform in Tel Aviv, Israel, but this attracted criticism from pro-Palestinian activists, who stated: “Your performance in Israel would be the equivalent to having performed in Sun City during South Africa’s apartheid era... We hope that you will not play apartheid Israel”. Scott-Heron responded by canceling the performance.

Un jeune homme originaire de la métropole lilloise, âgé de 24 ans et employé comme chauffeur au consulat français de Jérusalem depuis plus d’un an, a été arrêté par les autorités israéliennes et placé est en détention administrative depuis environ un mois dans le plus grand secret.

Il sera présenté ce lundi devant un tribunal israélien a confirmé le ministère de la justice de l’état hébreu.

Le chauffeur en question, jeune volontaire international détenteur d’un passeport de service est suspecté d’avoir convoyé des armes de la bande de Gaza en Cisjordanie via la voiture diplomatique, les autorités israéliennes n’ont donc pas le droit de la contrôler.

Selon certaines sources le jeune homme aurait avoué avoir transporté à plusieurs reprises durant les trois derniers mois des dizaines d’armes.
Un jeune palestinien travaillant également au consulat de France à Jérusalem comme agent de sécurité est lui aussi détenu dans le cadre de cette affaire.

Une affaire prise « très au sérieux »
L’ambassade de France à Tel Aviv prend l’affaire « très au sérieux  ». Les autorités françaises traitent cette affaire en lien étroit avec les autorités israéliennes compétentes.

Ces charges s’annoncent « extrêmement graves » , selon l’ambassade, qui n’exclut pas la possibilité que l’agent ait été manipulé.

Une audience aura lieu ce lundi à la mi-journée, au tribunal de Beer Sheva, au cours de laquelle un juge annoncera les charges retenues contre l’agent consulaire.

The maritime border dispute between Lebanon and Israel explained

The comments made by Israel’s Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman at a Tel Aviv conference on January 31 sparked outrage in Lebanon. It brought the issue of the maritime border dispute between Lebanon and Israel back into the spotlight and managed to catch Washington’s attention once again.

Little was happening on this front after the change of Administration in the U.S. After a few months, Lebanese officials stopped announcing that a resumption of mediation efforts was imminent. Then, in October, the decision, by a Total-led consortium to place a bid for Block 9 (which includes a disputed area) in Lebanon’s first licensing round, rekindled interest once again in the topic. But the buzz was discreet, confined to experts and diplomatic circles, until it was out in the open when Liberman described Lebanon’s offshore tender as “very provocative” and urged international companies not to bid, about a month and a half after licenses were awarded (see our roadmap).

The dispute unfolded in December 2010, when Cyprus and Israel signed a maritime border agreement that was denounced by Lebanon because it encroached on parts of its Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). On July 10, 2011, the Israeli cabinet approved a map of Israel’s northern maritime border, and two days later, the Israeli mission to the United Nations submitted a list of geographical coordinates for the delimitation of the northern limit of Israel’s territorial sea and EEZ. Some of the points defined in the Cypriot-Israeli agreement and submitted later to the U.N. overlap with the Lebanese EEZ.

Haaretz met with deported asylum seekers who were left with no papers or work permits; they can’t even enter refugee camps as they have no status. One option is to risk death and head for Europe

KAMPALA, Uganda – It’s around noon in Uganda’s capital Kampala. The streets are bustling and traffic is heavy. Meles looks out of place, and he certainly feels it. “I don’t have a future here,” he tells Haaretz. “I have no hope, no job. My life is ruined.”
He’s a relative newcomer here. He has been here for around two and a half months and says it’s just a matter of time until he’s on the road again. “I’m already 31 and prefer to try my luck elsewhere rather than live this way, God willing,” he says, pointing upward and not at the two crosses on his chest. “This time I’ll be lucky.”
The last time he tried his luck nearly a decade ago he deserted his unlimited military service in the Eritrean army and started walking north. Ultimately he reached Israel, where he lived for more than seven and a half years, from the beginning of 2010 until last November. Then he was forced to “leave voluntarily.”

In addition to the threat of prison if he didn’t leave, there was the $3,500 that Israel gave and the laissez-passer document, ensuring him legal status in a third country and the right to work. There were also verbal assurances that things would be all right – that he’d be able to make a living and integrate into his new country.
Soon after Meles landed at Uganda’s Entebbe Airport, he discovered there wasn’t much substance to the assurances, not even a way to contact the government clerk who sent him there. And regarding the documents, someone in Uganda was there to take them away from him as soon as he landed.

Haaretz has heard this story repeatedly from former asylum seekers in Israel who went to Rwanda (and from there took a circuitous path to neighboring Uganda), and from those whose airplane ticket took them straight to Entebbe. Haaretz met with more than 15 of them in Kampala and spoke with several others by phone. No Israeli official contacted them once they had left Israel, or took any interest in them once they had reached Africa.
Meles has no documents and no job, and has no status in Uganda letting him work. He has spent some of the $3,500, and it looks like the rest will be gone soon. He regrets that he didn’t opt for the Holot detention center in the south.

“It would be better to be in jail in Israel, where at least I would get food,” he says, adding that he advises asylum seekers still in Israel not to accept the offer of passage to a third country.
Meles’ Hebrew is excellent, an indication that he adjusted well during his seven and a half years in Israel. He worked three years for one employer and four years for another, the owner of a grocery store near Tel Aviv’s Carmel Market. From the very beginning he tried to obtain legal status in Israel.
When he arrived at the Saharonim detention facility in 2010, he gave details about his travails. He repeated them a month later when he left Saharonim and was granted a temporary visa. And he repeated them five years later when he submitted an asylum request. Like many others, he never received an answer on his request, but around that time he was told that his residence visa would not be renewed.

Yasin al-Saradih’s doomsday weapon is now lying in the yard of his home on Dmitry Medvedev Street in Jericho, draped with Palestinian and Fatah flags. It is the rim of a car wheel with a pipe coming up from its center. Altogether, 25 kilos of iron, which the proprietor of the bicycle store on Moskobiya Street in the center of town usually puts outside on the street to hold a parking place for his clients. Saradih, who was 36 years old, hoisted the device onto his shoulders and ran toward the Israel Defense Forces soldiers who had invaded his city in the middle of the night, between Wednesday and Thursday last week. Soldiers raid Jericho, the most tranquil town in the occupied territories, almost every night on a pretext of “carrying out arrests.”
The same pattern was repeated last week: A few dozen soldiers from the religiously observant Lavi Battalion had entered the city center – perhaps to demonstrate a presence, perhaps to maintain operational vigilance, perhaps to haze local residents or maybe as part of their training. As far as is known, they didn’t arrest anyone. They only killed Saradih, the first fatality inflicted here by the IDF in almost 15 years.
If quiet Jericho can be ignited, too, then why not? The access road to the city is now littered with stones and scorched tires, between the casino and the hotel, two silent monuments to former dreams of peace – “Jericho first.”

The footage from the security camera that documented the events on Moskobiya Street does not make for easy watching. Saradih is seen running along the street, the tire rim on his shoulders. A soldier steps out of an alley and shoots him from point-blank range. Saradih collapses immediately after the shot, and then soldiers swarm around him, and beat and kick him all over his body. This one kicks him, another rams him with his rifle butt – they’re venting their anger, the soldiers from Lavi, the battalion that ostensibly stands for morality and lofty values.

Then they drag Saradih into the alley, like a carcass in the market. One of them continues kicking him in the head. A lynching, there’s no other word for it. Finally the soldiers are seen putting him in a military vehicle. It’s not clear how long he lay there without being given any medical aid. He may have bled to death in the vehicle.

This week we visited the spot where it all happened, together with Aref Daraghmeh, a field researcher for the Israeli human rights organization B’Tselem, who arrived at the site a few hours after the killing. He says that no bloodstains were visible at the scene of the event. Perhaps that’s why the IDF claimed initially that Saradih died from tear gas fired by the soldiers. The autopsy, however, showed that he died from a gunshot – or possibly from the combination of being shot, undergoing a vicious beating and not being given medical assistance in time. The Military Police are still investigating.

Sources in the IDF told us this week that the soldiers maintain that they didn’t know a bullet had struck their victim (even though he’d been shot from close to zero range and immediately fell to the ground), and that’s why they kicked and punched him all over. The army medical team that examined Saradih also failed to notice the gunshot wound, the sources reported.
It’s odd: The autopsy performed at the Institute of Forensic Medicine in Abu Kabir, Tel Aviv – whose results were not officially publicized – revealed an entry wound and an exit wound caused by a bullet, and also bloodstains on the victim’s hip and lower abdomen, as well as on his clothes.
The army, however, stated that he died from tear gas inhalation. The soldiers also claimed that Saradih tried to snatch the weapon of one of them after he was shot, though there is no support for this in the video footage. They also say they found a knife on him.
The IDF Spokesperson’s Unit issued the following statement to Haaretz this week: “In the wake of the incident, and because the terrorist died after he had already been detained by IDF soldiers, a Military Police investigation has been launched, in which framework the circumstances of his death are being examined. An autopsy was also performed on the terrorist’s body. In parallel, a full operational debriefing of the event is continuing.”

When the troops reached Jericho, after 1 A.M. on Thursday, a few dozen young people – about 50, according to the IDF – confronted them and began throwing stones. Only a few dozen meters separate the site of the deadly incident and the Jericho police station. But as usual, as per the occupier’s demand, Palestinian police officers were compelled to remain out of sight inside the station until things calmed down and the soldiers had gone.
A second tire rim stood on the road in front of the bike shop this week, to ensure a parking place for customers. Nearby booths were buckling under the abundance of the fruits and vegetables that paint the streets in a panoply of colors, a uniquely Jericho sight.
Before the soldiers killed Saradih, they entered the house at the far end of the same alley from which they burst out. This is the ornate, colorful home of five Barahama siblings – four sisters and their brother, all of them unmarried – and their father, Mahmoud, who’s 86. A few big white, mangy street dogs roam about in the yard.
The brother, Mohammed, arrived home after midnight that Thursday morning, and made himself a cup of coffee, Hanan, one of the sisters, tells us this week when we visit. They heard noise and then the troops arrived and entered the house, it’s not clear why. Some members of the household were sleeping. Mohammed asked the soldiers not to make noise, because their father is very ill. The soldiers searched the house and left. Naturally, they didn’t explain to anyone what they were looking for and why they appeared so late at night. “The soldiers themselves don’t know why,” one local resident suggests.
A few minutes after the soldiers departed, Mohammed saw them standing over someone who was lying on the ground at the other end of the alley. He and his sisters didn’t realize that it was their cousin, Yasin Saradih. They hadn’t heard the shot.
Medvedev Street. Opposite the victim’s home is the Russian museum that was dedicated by the prime minister of Russia, Dmitry Medvedev, when he visited the city, on November 11, 2016. The street’s name, previously Al-Jumeisi (Sycamore), was changed in honor the dignitary’s visit. A mourning notice for Yasin Saradih, who lived on the street, has now been affixed to the marble plaque commemorating the dedication. On the other side of the street is a branch of the Cairo Amman Bank.
A magnificent, ancient sycamore stands at the end of Medvedev Street, in the center of a well-tended lawn. In the absence of any other passers-by, a souvenir hawker tries desperately to interest us in the story of this amazing tree. Biblical tradition has it that this is the very same tree that Jericho tax collector Zacchaeus, who was a short man, climbed up in order to see Jesus when the latter passed throughthe city. Zacchaeus was hated in the city, because he was thought to be a collaborator with its Roman occupiers, but to everyone’s astonishment Jesus chose to stay in his house, the Book of Luke (chapter 19) relates.
Three palm trees grace the tiled courtyard of the one-story house where the bereaved family is now sitting in a circle, on plastic chairs. Their grief at the loss of Yasin is compounded by the fact that Israel has to date refused to return the body. No one can explain what prompted Yasin to hoist the tire rim onto his shoulders and run toward the soldiers. He had never been arrested. A promising soccer player on the local Al-Hilal team, his career was cut short by two incidents in which he was shot in the leg by Israeli soldiers, once in 2000 and again in 2004. The large memorial poster that hangs in the courtyard shows him in the team’s red uniform. Despite his wounds, he remained an active member of the club. During the past few years, Yasin had worked for a relative who has a store that sells dates. He never married.
The bereaved mother, Subbaiah, is 70. She has one surviving son and seven daughters; Yasin was the youngest. Her eyes are dry, she shows no outward emotion. But when we ask if she’s seen the video footage, she breaks into bitter tears. She watched the footage once, later on the same day Yasin was killed, but has not been able to bring herself to view it again. It broke her heart to see the soldiers beating her son as he lay helpless on the ground. She initially thought the soldiers had arrested him and taken him away. No one told her at first that her son was dead.
Dawn broke and he still hadn’t returned. At 6 A.M., Subbaiah went to the home of her cousins the Barahamas, to find out what happened to Yasin. He’ll be back, they told her, he’ll be back: The soldiers took him. It wasn’t until that afternoon, 12 hours after the soldiers killed Yasin, that she learned the horrific truth, from a relative. Her son Ismail says he had already heard what happened at 7 A.M., when he was at work, but didn’t dare tell his mother.
On the last evening of his life, Yasin was in good spirits, Subbaiah recalls. He went to friends around 8 o’clock to watch a soccer game on television, as he often did. She never saw him again. What made him charge at the soldiers? That will probably never be known. His mother still cannot grasp why the soldiers kicked him and why they didn’t summon an ambulance to take him to the hospital.

The latest news on this subject is that casino magnate Sheldon Adelson is offering to pay for construction of a U.S. embassy in Jerusalem. Such an offer constitutes a sort of bonus to show Adelson’s satisfaction with how his earlier large financial contributions to Trump’s campaign helped to buy President Trump’s decision to move the U.S. embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. This move was a personal goal of Adelson, based on his personal affinity with Israel exceeding any affinity he has with the United States. Looked at from the standpoint of U.S. interests rather than private interests, the move was a huge mistake. It isolated the United States and was a major blow to any remaining hope for a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Given these prevailing attitudes and given the penury being forced on the State Department, perhaps a future step in the privatization of U.S. foreign policy will be the selling of naming rights. Maybe the building to be erected in Jerusalem will have a sign in front identifying it as the “Sheldon Adelson Embassy” or, along the lines of most naming rights deals, the “Las Vegas Sands Embassy."

Mohammed Malik is born in Norway and originally has Pakistani parents. "My name was obviously the reason I was taken aside in passport control. But they deported me because I am a unionist. I was thrown out because I am affiliated with the LO, says Mohammed Malik. The experience at the airport was humiliating.

The LO Congress last year agreed with a large majority that LO should work for international economic, cultural and academic boycott of Israel. The Israeli Embassy in Oslo says it is not familiar with the deportation of Malik before FriFagbevegelse contacted it today. The Embassy now investigates why Israel deported Malik. According to the embassy it may take many weeks to get any answers.

FriFagbevegelse asked whether unionists in Norway’s LO are a danger to Israel’s security. "LO decided to boycott the only Jewish state in the world. One might assume that such an extreme decision can have consequences when it comes to prominent members of the LO, "Ambassador Raphael Schutz writes in a reply on e-mail to FriFagbevegelse.

In the end, they gave him a document from the Israeli Ministry of Internal Affairs, which states “a decision to prohibit entry is described in “the entry into Israeli Act”.

“They took pictures of me, gave me the entry ban and said that “you are forever refused to enter Israel,” says Malik. “The reason the entry in the entry ban was “to prevent illegal immigration.” - I asked them why they deported me. They would not inform me, he says. He would like the Israeli authorities to explain this.
