The Mediterranean crush

Du grand Harling.
The Mediterranean was born in a massive collision between North and South, when the African, Arab and Eurasian plates ground into each other—a process started millions of years ago and ongoing today. Mountains rose, volcanoes erupted, and a depression was formed, which was fated to become a crucible of civilizations. Contemporary Europeans, if they had it their way, would reverse this tectonic encounter, push back incoming continents, and turn the sea our world once revolved around into an ocean.
#méditerranée
A space intimately associated with much of what we Europeans cherish culturally—from the foundations of philosophy to the better sides of religion, through to the renaissance and its ensuing humanism—is now increasingly associated with terrorism and unwelcome migration. The estrangement between the two sides of the Mediterranean is catalyzing a wishful, paranoid and self-destructive retreat: as Europe’s heterogeneous societies play up the fear of the Other, they sow mistrust among and within themselves. The more Europe locks down in response to the fragmentation of the Arab world, the more it seems to break apart along its own myriad fault-lines.

Authorities in France and Italy are responding to a major oil slick after a ferry collided with an anchored containership in the Mediterranean Sea off the island of Corsica.
The collision occurred Sunday morning when the Tunisian roll-on/roll-off ferry Ulysses collided broadside with the Cypriot registered containership CLS Virginia approximately 17 miles (28 km) north of Cape Corsica.
The collision caused a breach of the containership’s hull measuring several meters and resulting in the release of bunker fuel.
An oil slick measuring 20 km long by several hundred meters wide has been observed moving to the northwest, moving away from Corsica, according to France’s Maritime Prefecture for the Mediterranean.
Photos show the bow of the ferry embedded in the starboard side of the containership, which is not loaded with any containers.

A #diversity Round Table — Observations

I love the Collision conference. I attend every year. As a fund manager, it is a great place to see old friends, meet new ones, gain market awareness, learn about ideas and problem sets and have numerous intellectually curious conversations.Collision facilitates an “investor summit” every year where investors select a couple of “round table” discussions to join, from a list of just over a dozen options (with topics ranging from how to be a better board member to crypto currency and geographic investment focus, etc.).I chose to attend the panel on “How to bring about diversity in the VC industry” and was rather surprised that this was the least attended session (only 9 participants versus an average of 20 for the other sessions) with only two male participants, and only 1 white male.I’m (...)
