#Cancellations and delays of new US datacenters have increased as the #artificial_intelligence boom runs up against a slate of issues, including supply chain snags, #energy #shortages and #tariff-induced restraints.

Grassroots opposition from local #communities has also derailed some plans, and some #investors have grown wary of datacenters amid fears of an AI #bubble.

Dozens of plans for datacenters were killed or delayed in December or January, according to reports from the #investment research firm MacroEdge and climate news outlet Heatmap. MacroEdge’s research identified 26 cancellations through January – up from one in October.

#Marine_protected_areas in #Tanzania boosted living standards in nearby communities over a span of nearly 20 years, a recent study in Conservation Letters found.

Near #MPAs, living standards improved, and there was a shift away from agricultural work, said study author #Julia_Girard, a Ph.D. student in #environmental_economics at the #University_of_Montpellier, France.

How marine reserves fare in conservation and community development is an important question for Tanzania, where 20% of the population is heavily dependent on #fisheries for #food and #income.

The country established five multiuse MPAs in the 1990s, which allow fishing with additional rules designed to promote sustainability. Scientists have identified MPAs where regulated fishing activity is permitted as powerful tools to help Tanzania and other nations protect 30% of their #oceans by 2030 without denying fishers their livelihoods.

To see how these MPAs have impacted local development, the research team surveyed 840 households in 24 #villages in 2021, asking questions about employment, fishing history, standard of living, and perceptions about the marine reserves. They then compared the data with the results of a similar survey conducted in 2003. This is one of just a few studies documenting the #long-term_impacts of #multiuse_MPAs on #local_development.

Ecovillages : why they rise above just being eco ?

Intéressant cette association entre #permaculture et vie communautaire autour d’#écovillages. On retrouve cette volonté de vie communautaire autour du mouvement de l’agroécologie (avec les Oasis en tout lieux par exemple).

Contrary to popular belief, competition is not the most important factor for the evolution of humans, but rather cooperation. For most of history, people did not live in isolated #family units as they do nowadays – for centuries they gathered in #communities for the very logical reason that cooperation is key to our survival. As intentional communities, ecovillages exemplify this age-old wisdom of mutually cooperative existence. Their raison d’être goes beyond the constraints of simple ecological existence , as they ask such questions as: “How can we become more humane ? How can we find solidarity in the market-driven world of competitiveness ? Compassion in the capitalist rat race ?”

Ecovillages rest upon the #permaculture ethics of earth care, people care and fair share. They embody a blend of 4 dimensions of sustainability: #social, cultural, economic and ecological. All 4 dimensions must be addressed in a holistic manner so as to attain sustainability. Mutual aid and cooperation pervade the #ethics of permaculture and are therefore inextricably interwoven into the very fabric of ecovillages.
