    CBS/AP/ March 28, 2013, 5:26 AM
AP : "Master plan" underway to help Syria rebels take Damascus with U.S.-approved airlifts of heavy weapons

“Mideast powers opposed to President Bashar Assad have dramatically stepped up weapons supplies to Syrian rebels in coordination with the U.S. in preparation for a push on the capital of Damascus, officials and Western military experts said Wednesday. A carefully prepared covert operation is arming rebels, involving Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Qatar, with the United States and other Western governments consulting, and all parties hold veto power over where the shipments are directed, according to a senior Arab official whose government is participating. His account was corroborated by a diplomat and two military experts. Saudi Arabia and other regional powers have been arming Syria’s rebels for months, but the scale and coordination with the West — and the suggestion by the AP’s sources that the effort is linked to a plan for the rebels to try and seize Damascus — represents a potentially significant escalation in the civil war.”

San Francisco Arctic glaciers retreated at record levels in 2012, while summer snow melted in the region much more rapidly than it has in the past, according to a new report by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association (NOAA).

The findings, presented here Wednesday (Dec. 5) at the annual meeting of the American Geophysical Union, are part of the annual “Arctic Report Card,” which was assembled by more than 140 scientists to assess the state of the North Pole.

The report found that Greenland’s Arctic sea ice and glaciers were melting at a record rate and that sea-level rise has accelerated in the region. That has caused a population boom in lower-level organisms such as plankton, but has disrupted the life cycles of animals ranging from lemmings to the Arctic fox.

  • Ill. High School Soccer Coach Accused of Watching Players Sexually Assault Teammates

A soccer coach from a high school in Chicago has been at the center of a scandal after he was accused of allowing and watching players sexually assault team members, Chicago affiliate CBS 2 reports.

Michael Divincenzo, a soccer coach at Maine West High School, has been accused of not taking action after he witnessed students sexually haze team members, which became a ritual in the school for years.

An unidentified mother of a student has joined a lawsuit with several families against Divincenzo and the school and claims that her son was assaulted in September. According to the lawsuit, the soccer coach has been aware of these sexual attacks since 2007.

“I thought my son would be safe at school,” she told ABC’s WLS-TV. “You think when you drop off your son, it’s a safe place to be. But I feel like the coaches should have kept him safe on the soccer field, and they didn’t do that.” She added that the acts and the school’s lack of response brakes Illinois state anti-bullying laws.

“Multiple children could have been saved from the humility, indignity and emotional trauma and assault,” attorney Tony Romanucci said.

According to the lawsuit, the unidentified mother’s son, 14, and at least two other boys were sexually assaulted during soccer practice in September during school hours - and coaches knew about the hazing. The lawsuit goes on to say that older players held down the boys, pulled down their pants and underwear and sodomized them. The plaintiffs say that the hazing is part of initiation for becoming part of the school’s varsity soccer team. The complaint also claims that Principal Audrey Haugan knew about the attacks, or should have known, and that two soccer coaches witnessed the ritual and allowed it to continue.

“That behavior in today’s society is disgusting,” Romanucci said. “It should never be condoned. It should never have happened.”

The Daily Mail (U.K.) reports that the first incidents involving Divincenzo occurred in July where he allegedly told other players to sexually assault younger teammates. The coach, along with two other coaches, who are also teachers, and varsity coach Emilo Rodriguez, were transferred with pay while the school district investigates the incident. According to the newspaper, three other coaches have been let go and six students have been sent to juvenile court on hazing charges.

When a hazing incident occurred four years ago, a freshman’s pants were allegedly pulled down in the locker room. When the student’s mother reported the assault, the school did nothing

Extremely Rich Wall Street CEO Wants Americans to Work Longer
    Pat Garofalo
    Think Progress / News Report
    Tuesday 20 November 2012

Lloyd Blankfein — evidently taking a break from doing “god’s work” as the CEO of Wall Street behemoth Goldman Sachs — told CBS News’ Scott Pelley that he believes the retirement age needs to be raised because “in general, entitlements have to be slowed down and contained”:

BLANKFEIN: You’re going to have to undoubtedly do something to lower people’s expectations — the entitlements and what people think that they’re going to get, because it’s not going to — they’re not going to get it.

    PELLEY: Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid?

BLANKFEIN: You can look at history of these things, and Social Security wasn’t devised to be a system that supported you for a 30-year retirement after a 25-year career. … So there will be things that, you know, the retirement age has to be changed, maybe some of the benefits have to be affected, maybe some of the inflation adjustments have to be revised. But in general, entitlements have to be slowed down and contained.

PELLEY: Because we can’t afford them going forward?

BLANKFEIN: Because we can’t afford them.

Maybe working until a later age is fine for a Wall Street CEO whose net worth is $450 million. But it’s simply nonsense to assert that the retirement age needs to go up because Social Security is no longer affordable.

For starters, Social Security can pay full benefits for decades without any changes at all. (Imagine the accolades that would received if any other federal program had guaranteed funding for that stretch of time.) One simple change, raising the cap on the payroll tax, can guarantee that the program will pay nearly full benefits for three-quarters of a century. In the meantime, Social Security is statutorily barred from adding one dime to the federal deficit, so cutting it doesn’t change the nation’s deficit or debt picture.

Raising the retirement age, meanwhile, adversely impacts those workers most in need of a robust social safety net. While a year or two of extra work may not seem like much to a Wall Street CEO with his cushy corner office, for a factory worker or janitor, it can mean real problems. Life expectancy is only increasing for wealthier workers in non-physical jobs. Poorer workers doing physical labor have not seen the same gains. Overall, raising the retirement age to 70 would “cut benefits for the average retiree by 19 percent.”

Arnold Schwarzenegger says he performed two same-sex weddings in his office while California governor but denies he supports gay marriage

Hollywood action hero Arnold Schwarzenegger has revealed he married two gay couples while he was governor of California.

The Terminator star told CBS News last night (30 September) that he married his former chief of staff Susan Kennedy, who he once dubbed a ’cigar smoking lesbian’.

’I performed the wedding in the office,’ the Austrian hard-man revealed to interviewer Lesley Stahl after she asked whether he went to Kennedy’s wedding.

’I married her in the office, in the governor’s office.’

However, while also admitting to performing a second same-sex wedding for an assistant in the governor’s office, the actor refused to go so far as openly backing gay marriage.

He said: ’I’m for that she gets the kind of wedding and the kind of ceremony that I had when I got married with Maria [Shriver].

’That she happens to love a woman, and I am a guy that loves a woman, that is two different things. It doesn’t make any difference. She should still have her ceremony.’

Dsepite being a Republican, Schwarzenegger says he has not yet decided whether to vote for his party’s presidential candidate, Mitt Romney, or pro-gay marriage Democrat Barack Obama.

However, he added: ’I believe in “love it or change it” rather than “love it or leave it.” I never will leave the Republican.’

Schwarzenegger is currently promoting his memoir Total Recall.

Israel asks Arab visitors to open emails to search - CBS News

    http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-501713_162-57446977/israel-asks-arab-visitors-to-open-emails-to-search

In a modern twist on Israel’s vaunted history of airport security, the country has begun forcing incoming travelers deemed suspicious to open their personal e-mail accounts for inspection.

JERUSALEM — When Sandra Tamari arrived at Israel’s international airport, she received an unusual request: A security agent pushed a computer screen in front of her, connected to Gmail and told her to “log in.”

The agent, suspecting Tamari was involved in pro-Palestinian activism, wanted to inspect her private email account for incriminating evidence. The 42-year-old American of Palestinian descent refused and was swiftly expelled from the country.

Tamari’s experience is not unique. In a cyber-age twist on Israel’s vaunted history of airport security, the country has begun to force incoming travelers deemed suspicious to open personal email accounts for inspection, visitors say.

Targeting mainly Muslims or Arabs, the practice appears to be aimed at rooting out visitors who have histories of pro-Palestinian activism, and in recent weeks, has led to the expulsion of at least three American women.

It remains unclear how widespread the practice is.

    http://www.alternet.org/story/155102/are_data-mining_and_advertising_stripping_language_of_its_meaning_?page=en

Advertising isn’t interested in political regeneration. The purpose is to nurture foolish thoughts, and the laziness of mind suckled at the silicone breasts of CBS and Disney counts as a consumer benefit. The postliterate sensibility is offended by anything that isn’t television, views with suspicion the compound sentence, the subordinate clause, words of more than three syllables. The home and studio audiences become accustomed to hearing voices swept clean of improvised literary devices, downsized into data points, degraded into industrial-waste product.

Ambiguity doesn’t sell the shoes. Neither does taking time to think, or allowing too long a pause between the subject and the predicate. In the synthetic America the Beautiful, everything good is easy, anything difficult is bad, and the customer is always right. The body politic divides into constituencies of one, separate states of wishful thinking receding from one another at the speed of light.

Jan Maas, author of the book Mad Women, which is about exactly what it sounds like, stopped by the Saturday edition of CBS This Morning to make the hosts feel bad for not wishing her a happy 80th birthday and to tell America how difficult it was to be an ad-woman in the 60’s. After gushing about how much she loved the show and insinuating, through the dancing glint in her eye, that she’s a crossword puzzle shark, she explained that Mad Men gets the mid-century Madison Avenue atmosphere about right, except for a few small details, such as the fact that sexual harassment was even more prevalent (and more aggressive) when she was working as a copywriter and lady copywriters all wore hats in the office. Fancy hats. As for the sexual harassment, Maas explains that married women like herself were sometimes put in super tricky positions when older office men pursued them. She says that, though she was dogged relentlessly by her creative director for two years, she was afraid to tell her husband for fear that he, a former marine, would shoot her boss (spoiler alert?) because bygone generations just did not fuck around.

A five-year-old girl from Charlton, Mass. burst into tears after a local library sent Police Sergeant Dan Dowd to her house to retrieve the child’s two overdue library books, CBS Boston reported.

“I thought it was way overboard,” the girl’s mother, Shannon Benoit, said. “I closed my door, I looked at my daughter and she started crying.” According to the report, Shannon’s daughter thought Dowd was going to arrest her.

    http://studentactivism.net/2011/11/19/police-brutality-and-lies-at-uc-davis

Yesterday afternoon, after UC Davis police dismantled an Occupy encampment on their campus, making several arrests, a group of students sat down.

That’s it. They sat down in a wide ring around the officers, and bowed their heads. Some linked arms. Many did not. Officers were positioned behind the line and in front of them, and — video shows — were able to move past them easily in either direction.

    [..]

The chief of the UC Davis police department told the local CBS news that officers began spraying, in the station’s paraphrase, “out of concern for their own safety,” a claim that video and photos of the incident demonstrates to be completely false. She told the Sacramento Bee that officers “officers were forced to use pepper spray when students surrounded them,” that — and this is a direct quote — “there was no way out of that circle.” But video shows, again, that officers were moving freely throughout the incident. The officer who sprayed first, in fact (identified online as Lt. John Pike) was standing inside the circle immediately before he began spraying, and stepped past the students, out of the circle, in order to spray them

  • How Television Fuels the Class War
    http://www.turnoffyourtv.com/commentary/classwar/classwar.htm?t=1320733618

First, it must be noted that television is solely the domain of the rich and powerful. From its inception, ordinary citizens were not granted access. This can be clearly seen today through advertising rates which indicate that a 30-second commercial spot during NBC’s The Apprentice costs $163,000; during CBS’s CSI: Miami it costs $229,000; and during ABC’s Desperate Housewives 30 seconds costs $440,000 (stats from AdAge Factpack 2006). Most political candidates don’t have a prayer of winning public office without raising large sums of money to funnel into media advertising. Powerful corporations run media organizations and are monopolizing the industry at a staggering pace (see the essay Big Media 2007: For The Love of Money).

Television’s control by the upper class can also be seen through TV news which only covers the thoughts and ideas of powerful politicians or wealthy businessmen. On CNBC’s Wall Street Journal Report program in July 2006, billionaire George Soros told the show’s host that his opinions only have value on TV because he is rich. “I’m sitting here, you’re interviewing me because I made a lot of money. Right? That’s why you are interested in my views,” said Soros. “So you see if I were some university professor saying the things that I’m saying you probably wouldn’t be sitting here . . . We don’t care about the truth, sufficiently. If we are mislead by our leaders, we don’t really care that much . . . What we care about is success.”

And here’s the paragraph, buried in the middle of their piece, that should have stopped readers in their tracks:

“Or consider what American computer specialists are doing on the Internet, perhaps terrorist leaders’ greatest safe haven, where they recruit, raise money, and plot future attacks on a global scale. American specialists have become especially proficient at forging the onscreen cyber-trademarks used by Al Qaeda to certify its Web statements, and are posting confusing and contradictory orders, some so virulent that young Muslims dabbling in jihadist philosophy, but on the fence about it, might be driven away.”

[...] Just what kind of “orders” can they be posting “so virulent that young Muslims dabbling in jihadist philosophy, but on the fence about it, might be driven away”?

And even if our computer experts really were capable of turning wavering young Muslims back from the shores of jihadism — and personally I wouldn’t put my money on the Pentagon’s skills in that realm — what about young Muslims (or older ones for that matter) who weren’t on that fence and took those “orders” seriously? What exactly are they being “ordered” to do?

The Great Islamophobic Crusade - #CBS_News
    http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2010/12/19/opinion/main7166626.shtml

It reflects an aggressively pro-Israel sensibility, with its key figures venerating the Jewish state as a Middle Eastern Fort Apache on the front lines of the Global War on Terror and urging the U.S. and various European powers to emulate its heavy-handed methods.

Little of recent American Islamophobia (with a strong emphasis on the “phobia”) is sheer happenstance. Years before Tea Party shock troops massed for angry protests outside the proposed site of an Islamic community center in lower Manhattan, representatives of the Israel lobby and the Jewish-American establishment launched a campaign against pro-Palestinian campus activism that would prove a seedbed for everything to come. That campaign quickly — and perhaps predictably — morphed into a series of crusades against mosques and Islamic schools which, in turn, attracted an assortment of shady but exceptionally energetic militants into the network’s ranks.

Besides providing the initial energy for the Islamophobic crusade, conservative elements from within the pro-Israel lobby bankrolled the network’s apparatus, enabling it to influence the national debate. One philanthropist in particular has provided the beneficence to propel the campaign ahead. He is a little-known Los Angeles-area software security entrepreneur named Aubrey Chernick, who operates out of a security consulting firm blandly named the National Center for Crisis and Continuity Coordination. A former trustee of the Washington Institute for Near East Policy, which has served as a think tank for the American Israel Policy Action Committee (AIPAC), a frontline lobbying group for Israel, Chernick is said to be worth $750 million.
