Martin Shkreli, directeur général de Turing Pharmaceuticals et KaloBios Pharmaceuticals, a été arrêté jeudi par le FBI dans le cadre d’une enquête pour malversations boursières datant d’une époque où il dirigeait une autre entreprise. Selon zone Bourse, l’homme d’affaires aurait utilisé des actifs du fond spéculatif MSMB capital management, alors en faillite, pour fonder Retrophin, sa société biopharmaceutique. À la tête de cette entreprise pendant plusieurs années, il a finalement été licencié en 2014 accusé par le conseil d’administration de se servir de Retrophin pour rembourser les dettes de MSMB capital.

Surnommé « l’homme le plus détesté du monde », Martin Shkreli s’était spécialisé dans le rachat de brevets pharmaceutiques peu coûteux qu’il revendait sur le marché beaucoup plus chers. En septembre, il avait choqué l’opinion publique en augmentant de 5.000% le prix du daraprim, un médicament prescrit dans le traitement de la toxoplamosme, du paludisme et de certaines infections du Sida. L’homme de 32 ans avait fait passer le prix d’un comprimé de 13,50 dollars (environ 12 euros) à 750 dollars, environ 691 euros.

Turing Pharmaceuticals AG’s decision to raise the price of a decades-old drug it company acquired by 50-fold was a “perversion of the system,” said the leader of one of the U.S. largest biotechnology companies and the incoming head of the drug industry’s lobby group.
The pricing decision by Martin Shkreli, Turing’s founder and chief executive officer, “dropped down a storm on the whole industry" that drugmakers don’t deserve, Biogen Inc. Chief Executive Officer George Scangos said Friday in a telephone interview. He called the move by Turing’s CEO “arrogant” and “naïve.”
Scangos is next in line to be chairman of the pharmaceutical industry’s Washington lobbying group, Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America, which has defended drugmakers this year as they’ve come under criticism for the price of medicine.

Americans are paying way over the odds for some modern cancer drugs, with pharmaceutical companies charging up to 600 times what the medicines cost to make, according to an independent academic study.

The United States also pays more than double the price charged in Europe for these drugs - so-called tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs), a potent class of cancer pills with fewer side effects than chemotherapy.
