The FTC has filed a legal challenge to try and block Microsoft’s plan to buy Activision Blizzard for $68.7 billion, according to a press release from the regulator. The lawsuit was filed today after weeks of back and forth between Microsoft, Sony, and regulators over competition concerns and the future of Call of Duty. The FTC argues that the acquisition would “enable Microsoft to suppress competitors to its Xbox gaming consoles and its rapidly growing subscription content and cloud-gaming business.”

Microsoft’s unprecedented $68.7 billion purchase of embattled video game giant Activision Blizzard has antitrust regulators sniffing the scene with eyebrows raised, prompting a response this week from the tech giant. Activision Blizzard’s Call of Duty series, it said, will continue to launch on Sony’s PlayStation consoles as well as on Xbox, while Microsoft’s Game Pass subscription service will bring franchises like Overwatch and Diablo to other devices, including phones, via streaming.

That latter point — repeatedly emphasized by Microsoft — glosses over an inconvenient fact: Game Pass is itself a platform, one that allows users to access a rotating selection of hundreds of games to download and play for a low monthly price. In spreading it far and wide, Microsoft is not performing some act of selfless magnanimity. Instead, it’s setting itself up to come out on top in the next video game console war, one in which apps and services win the day, not specific devices. (A U.K. regulator argued as much in a decision published Thursday, which amounted to the first real public challenge to Microsoft’s planned acquisition).

More than 10 million people have streamed games over Xbox Cloud Gaming, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella said Tuesday during the company’s third-quarter earnings call. Cloud gaming is a feature that’s only available as part of the $14.99 per month Xbox Game Pass Ultimate tier, so the figure shared Tuesday indicates that a lot of people are checking it out. It’s also a concrete stat in a field where there have been few — Google doesn’t break out numbers for Stadia, and any numbers shared by Nvidia for GeForce Now include people who have used a no-strings-attached free trial.

[…] It’s also worth noting that you can technically sign up for a month of Xbox Game Pass Ultimate for just a dollar and then cancel, and it’s unclear how many people who did that and streamed a game might also be counted in Microsoft’s figure shared Tuesday.

Ubisoft has switched off the online services for over 90 titles, including multiple entries in the Assassin’s Creed, Far Cry, Rainbow Six, Might & Magic, and Just Dance franchises.

The vast majority of the games affected are older releases for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Wii, and Wii U, although there are some that remain available on PC.

Ubisoft explained the online multiplayer services for all of the affected titles have now been shut down, but that all offline features remain available.

“Unlockable content (ULC) such as maps and skins will also be disabled, meaning that you will no longer be able to unlock them. On PC, ULC will no longer be available even if it has been redeemed previously. On console, the ULC will continue to be available unless you reset your saved game files.”

Sony has stopped selling its PlayStation consoles and software in Russia, becoming the latest major brand to withdraw from the country over the Ukraine war.

Sony’s decision is one of the video game industry’s most significant moves yet. Experts say the company has the biggest presence in Russia out of any console maker.

“PlayStation has the largest installed base, so if a company on the console side has a particularly hard choice from a purely financial angle, it’s Sony,” said Lewis Ward, head of gaming at research firm IDC.
