Edward Bulwer, Lord Lytton, THE COMING RACE,1870

My host then proceeded to question me as to the habits and modes of life among the races on the upper earth, more especially among those considered to be the most advanced in that civilisation which he was pleased to define “the art of diffusing throughout a community the tranquil happiness which belongs to a virtuous and well-ordered household.” Naturally desiring to represent in the most favourable colours the world from which I came, I touched but slightly, though indulgently, on the antiquated and decaying institutions of Europe, in order to expatiate on the present grandeur and prospective pre-eminence of that glorious American Republic, in which Europe enviously seeks its model and tremblingly foresees its doom. Selecting for an example of the social life of the United States that city in which progress advances at the fastest rate, I indulged in an animated description of the moral habits of New York. Mortified to see, by the faces of my listeners, that I did not make the favourable impression I had anticipated, I elevated my theme; dwelling on the excellence of democratic institutions, their promotion of tranquil happiness by the government of party, and the mode in which they diffused such happiness throughout the community by preferring, for the exercise of power and the acquisition of honours, the lowliest citizens in point of property, education, and character. Fortunately recollecting the peroration of a speech, on the purifying influences of American democracy and their destined spread over the world, made by a certain eloquent senator (for whose vote in the Senate a Railway Company, to which my two brothers belonged, had just paid 20,000 dollars), I wound up by repeating its glowing predictions of the magnificent future that smiled upon mankind—when the flag of freedom should float over an entire continent, and two hundred millions of intelligent citizens, accustomed from infancy to the daily use of revolvers, should apply to a cowering universe the doctrine of the Patriot Monroe.

In June 1858, when her husband was standing as parliamentary candidate for Hertfordshire, she denounced him at the hustings. He retaliated by threatening her publishers, withholding her allowance and denying her access to their children. Finally he had her committed to a mental asylum, but she was released a few weeks later after a public outcry.

Bulwer-Lytton’s works were well known in his time. He coined famous phrases like “pursuit of the almighty dollar”, “the pen is mightier than the sword”, “dweller on the threshold”, “the great unwashed”, and the opening phrase (incipit) “It was a dark and stormy night”. The sardonic Bulwer-Lytton Fiction Contest, held annually from 1982 to 2024, claimed to seek the “opening sentence of the worst of all possible novels”.
Bulwer-Lytton’s works had an influence in a number of fields.
Bulwer-Lytton’s most famous quotation is “The pen is mightier than the sword” from his play Richelieu:
beneath the rule of men entirely great, the pen is mightier than the sword
He popularized the phrase “pursuit of the almighty dollar” from his novel The Coming Race,[46] and he is credited with “the great unwashed”, using this disparaging term in his 1830 novel Paul Clifford:
He is certainly a man who bathes and “lives cleanly”, (two especial charges preferred against him by Messrs. the Great Unwashed).
The writers of theosophy were among those influenced by Bulwer-Lytton’s work. Annie Besant and especially Helena Blavatsky incorporated his thoughts and ideas, particularly from The Last Days of Pompeii, Vril, the Power of the Coming Race and Zanoni in her own books.[48][49]
Bulwer-Lytton’s name lives on in the annual Bulwer-Lytton Fiction Contest, in which contestants think up terrible openings for imaginary novels, inspired by the first line of his 1830 novel Paul Clifford:[50]
It was a dark and stormy night; the rain fell in torrents – except at occasional intervals, when it was checked by a violent gust of wind which swept up the streets (for it is in London that our scene lies), rattling along the housetops, and fiercely agitating the scanty flame of the lamps that struggled against the darkness.
Entrants in the contest seek to capture the rapid changes in point of view, the florid language, and the atmosphere of the full sentence.[51] The opening was popularized by the Peanuts comic strip, in which Snoopy’s sessions on the typewriter usually began with “It was a dark and stormy night”.[52] The same words also form the first sentence of Madeleine L’Engle’s Newbery Medal–winning novel A Wrinkle in Time. Similar wording appears in Edgar Allan Poe’s 1831 short story “The Bargain Lost”, although not at the very beginning. It reads:
It was a dark and stormy night. The rain fell in cataracts; and drowsy citizens started, from dreams of the deluge, to gaze upon the boisterous sea, which foamed and bellowed for admittance into the proud towers and marble palaces. Who would have thought of passions so fierce in that calm water that slumbers all day long? At a slight alabaster stand, trembling beneath the ponderous tomes which it supported, sat the hero of our story.
Several of Bulwer-Lytton’s novels were made into operas. One of them, Rienzi, der Letzte der Tribunen (1842) by Richard Wagner,[53] eventually became more famous than the novel.[citation needed] Leonora (1846) by William Henry Fry, the first European-styled “grand” opera composed in the United States, is based on Bulwer-Lytton’s play The Lady of Lyons,[54] as is Frederic Cowen’s first opera Pauline (1876).[55] Verdi rival Errico Petrella’s most successful opera, Jone (1858), was based on Bulwer-Lytton’s The Last Days of Pompeii, and was performed all over the world until the 1880s, and in Italy until 1910.[56] Harold: The Last of the Saxon Kings (1848) provided character names (but little else) for Verdi’s opera Aroldo (1857).[57]
Theatrical adaptations
Shortly after their first publication, The Last Days of Pompeii, Rienzi, and Ernest Maltravers all received successful stage performances in New York. The plays were written by Louisa Medina, one of the most successful playwrights of the 19th century. The Last Days of Pompeii had the longest continuous stage run in New York at the time with 29 straight performances.[58]
In addition to his political and literary work, Bulwer-Lytton became the editor of the New Monthly in 1831, but he resigned the following year. In 1841, he started the Monthly Chronicle, a semi-scientific magazine. During his career he wrote poetry, prose, and stage plays; his last novel was Kenelm Chillingly, which was in course of publication in Blackwood’s Magazine at the time of his death in 1873.[13]
Bulwer-Lytton’s works of fiction and non-fiction were translated in his day and since then into many languages, including Serbian (by Laza Kostic), German, Russian, Norwegian, Swedish, French, Finnish, and Spanish. In 1879, his Ernest Maltravers was the first complete novel from the West to be translated into Japanese.[59]
In Brisbane, Queensland, Australia, the suburb of Lytton, the town of Bulwer on Moreton Island (Moorgumpin) and the neighbourhood (former island) of Bulwer Island are named after him.[60][61][62] The township of Lytton, Quebec (today part of Montcerf-Lytton) was named after him[63] as was Lytton, British Columbia, and Lytton, Iowa. Lytton Road in Gisborne, New Zealand, was named after the novelist. Later a state secondary school, Lytton High School, was founded in the road.[64] Also in New Zealand, Bulwer is a small locality in Waihinau Bay in the outer Pelorus Sound, New Zealand. It can be reached by 77 km of winding, mostly unsealed, road from Rai Valley. A weekly mail boat service delivers mail and also offers passenger services. In London, Lytton Road in the suburb of Pinner, where the novelist lived, is named after him.
Portrayal on television
Bulwer-Lytton was portrayed by the actor Brett Usher in the 1978 television serial Disraeli.

Time to split...
As the reality of the war became clear, members of Vril were increasingly frustrated by attempts to use their revealed technology for killing machines. Around Christmas time 1943, an important meeting of the Vril-Gesellschaft took place at the seaside resort of Kolberg. Maria Ortic and “Sigrun” presided and discussed the urgency of the Aldebaran Project. They feared that the war chaos posed a danger to their ultimate goal of using the vril-engine’s time-warp potential to reach their benefactors on their Aldebaran planet. The mediums had received precise information about the habitable planets around the sun Aldebaran and had already planned a trip there.
A few weeks later, at a January 22, 1944 meeting between Hitler, Himmler, Kunkel (of the Vril Society) and Dr. Schumann the Aldebaran Project was discussed. When tethered, the anti-gravity engine produced a time-warp field. The Vril had been told that this would enable them to travel faster than the speed of light. They had conveyed specific details on how to achieve this. So specific, in fact, that a test flight was conducted.
The Vril were allowed to use Vril-7, a large-capacity disc, 45 meters in diameter that had just been built and tested. According to reports, the first test flight in the “dimension channel” took place in the winter of 1944 with the craft tightly tethered. In this way the vril-engine could be used as a sort-of stargate. It was a sobering experience, just short of disaster. The Vril 7 returned after the “flight” looking “as if it had been flying for a hundred years”. The outer skin was damaged in several places. For sure, these problems would have to be addressed before the “real” trip to Aldebaran was made or the passengers would not survive.
[Above:] Vril 7 at the Brandenburg testing grounds. The woman in the foreground is the Vril Gesellschaft medium “Sigrun” who has been authenticated in other WW2 photos standing in front of Fw 190 fighters. She not only supervised the construction of Vril-7 but she was also its pilot.
Vril’s medium “Sigrun” made frequent trips to the facility to oversee construction and testing of the Vril 7. In 1944, a group of engineers approached her with a request. They wanted to know if the Vril Triebwerk engine could be adapted to one of their projects — the Arado E.555 strategic bomber [right]. They were abruptly told, “No” and returned to their conventional designs. Sigrun was actually insulted because the entire purpose of the Vril discs was aimed at peaceful space flight.
In early March of 1945, the Thule society received a letter, signed by Maria Orsich, making reference to the trip to Aldebaran. It seems some of the Vril group had already made the trip and had decided to stay. The letter ends with, “neimand bleibt hier” — no one has remained here. But did they really go to another planet?
Many people now believe that Aldebaran was a red herring. The real destination was the Utopia that was being established in the Antarctic — New Swabiland. This was the raison d’etre for the racial purity and breeding programs. This is where the 100+ submarines that Allies counted “missing” were sent, along with countless cargo ships.
During the occupation of Germany, at the beginning of 1945, Americans discovered photographs of the Haunebu II and the Vril I crafts as well as of the Andromeda device — the 300 foot cigar shaped craft — in the secret archives of the SS. But their most precious find were two prominent scientists, Viktor Schauberger and Wernher von Braun, who were ushered into the US under the now unclassified Project Paperclip.
It’s no wonder that a certain American air and space developer is reported to have confessed before he died, “If the public ever learns that we have had this technology all these years, they will never forgive us for keeping it secret.”
Some Vril images... What do they mean?
[Above:] Conspiracy theorists often attempt to show that the same Thule and Vril designs appear in contemporary UFO photographs. They say this proves the Nazis escaped with the craft before the War’s end and explains why we see UFO craft so often.
I like to think there is a group of humans, somewhere, who have worked so diligently to improve their genetics, creating a superior and more healthy body and mind. Looking at our world today, it seems a goal beyond reach.
It is said that the Vril energy can repair a body’s DNA, allowing one to revert to the healthiest state of youth. The medium “Sigrun” was supposedly 140 years old and never aged. Lot’s of things are possible when you can manipulate time.
If any Vril women are reading this, I’m all packed.
But wait... there’s more!
Consider that the Vril time machine/anti-gravity device used a rotating drum of mercury, in a unique state called “red mercury”... and that Vril energy can rejuvenate living tissue... now look at this story (December 2011), presented as found:
