GfK has released a new, completely overhauled digital map edition for all of Asia. The edition features coverage of 49 countries, ranging from the three BRICS nations Russia, India and China to smaller countries such as Bhutan. In addition to more granular coastlines, the digital maps depict the latest status of administrative and postal regions. Detailed, up-to-date digital maps are a prerequisite for accurate location-based market analyses.

China

Administrative: There have been adjustments to all administrative levels. The new map edition includes the latest boundaries for China’s 33 provinces, 343 prefectures and 2,879 counties.
Postal: Six-digit postcodes are available for China’s 50 largest metropolitan regions. This corresponds to 6,215 six-digit postcodes in the new map edition. The edition also includes comprehensive coverage of the country’s two-, three- and four-digit postcodes.
Topographic: The newly digitized maps feature substantially more detail in cities and along coastlines. Boundaries match the street/house level in cities for which six-digit postcode boundaries are available.

India

Administrative: For the first time, the India edition includes a map of the country’s subdistricts, which encompass 6,027 regions. In terms of the nation’s superordinate districts, 42 have been dissolved, 87 newly created and 51 newly named. All 707 regions received new IDs. At the federal state and union territory level, one state was divided, making 36 regions in total.
Postal: There have been only minor changes at the level of India’s more than 19,000 six-digit postcodes (PIN Codes). Exceptions are the states of Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata and Mumbai, which have been completely overhauled.
Topographic: Most changes in this category affect the various city map layers. In terms of India’s cities with more than 5 million inhabitants, six new ones have been added since 2014. As a result, there are now eight cities in this population bracket. Among cities with between one and five million inhabitants, eight have been added, making 38 in total. There have also been many changes to the smaller cities, reflecting India’s dynamic structural development with its more than 1.3 billion inhabitants.

If you browse through the latest headlines about the now month-long border stand-off between India and China, you might think the Asian rivals are teetering on the brink of an armed conflict.

The rhetoric is full of foreboding and menace. A Delhi newspaper says China is warning that the stand-off “could escalate into full-scale conflict”. Another echoes a similar sentiment, saying “China stiffens face-off posture”.

In Beijing, the state-run media has begun reminding India of its defeat in the 1962 war over the border, digging out old reports and pictures of the conflict. Global Times has been particularly bellicose, first accusing India of undermining Bhutan’s sovereignty by interfering in the road project, and then declaring that if India “stirs up conflicts in several spots, it must face the consequences of all-out confrontation with China”.

The latest row erupted in mid-June when India opposed China’s attempt to extend a border road through a plateau known as #Doklam in India and Donglang in China.

The plateau, which lies at a junction between China, the north-eastern Indian state of Sikkim and the Himalayan kingdom of Bhutan, is currently disputed between Beijing and Bhutan. India supports Bhutan’s claim over it.

India is concerned that if the road is completed, it will give China greater access to India’s strategically vulnerable “chicken’s neck”, a 20km (12-mile) wide corridor that links the seven north-eastern states to the Indian mainland. And since this stand-off began, each side has reinforced its troops and called on the other to back down.

Bhutanese Refugees

Where are the Bhutanese refugees? The refugee camps in Eastern Nepal have been home to an entire generation of Bhutanese of Nepali origin who were evicted from or fled Southern Bhutan in the early 90s.
Six years after the resettlement began, there are 26,000 refugees plus remaining in the camps. Of these, a majority has applied for resettlement. Many are keen on joining their families and friends abroad.
There are some refugees who think that resettlement deviates the focus from repatriation – a solution that many still cling to as their right, although it has been resolutely denied to them for so long. Then there are those who think that integration in Nepal is the next best alternative, given their historical and cultural ties with this country.
The Bhutanese refugees have been on life support for 22 years. What happens to those who cannot or do not want to access the durable solution of resettlement?

The island nation of Madagascar and the landlocked Himalayan nation of Bhutan might seem like charming tourist attractions. Travelers might want to think twice before visiting them, though. A recent Health Risk index by International SOS urges caution for visitors to those two countries, among other places.

The world map reprinted here is a reflection of more than 300,000 medical incidents which were reported in 2014 by companies to International SOS, which specializes in health care and emergency services to clients with business travelers overseas. Based on that data, a panel took into account threats of infectious disease, hygiene and sanitation, frequency of accidents and the availability and quality of the local health infrastructure to determine how risky a trip to a particular country might be.
