Many of the trees I have photographed have survived because they are out of reach of civilization; on mountainsides, private estates, or on protected land. Certain species exist only in a few isolated areas of the world. For example; there are 6 species of spectacular baobabs, found only on the island of Madagascar. Sadly, the baobab is now one of the three most endangered species on the island.
The criteria I use for choosing particular trees are basically three: age, immense size or notable history. I research the locations by a number of methods; history books, botanical books, tree registers, newspaper articles and information from friends and travelers.

Bill Kayong, a dedicated land rights activist and member of the opposition party in Malaysia’s Sarawak state, was killed in a drive-by shooting while waiting at a traffic light in broad daylight on Wednesday.
Sarawak Criminal Investigation Department chief Dev Kumar told The Borneo Post that the case is being classified as a murder, but appealed to the public to avoid speculating on who might be responsible as the police conduct their investigation. He also asked for any member of the public who might have information about the assassination of Bill Kayong to come forward.

Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines on Monday agreed to designate a transit corridor for commercial vessels crossing a maritime zone hit by a spate of hijackings by Islamist militants in the southern Philippines.
Nearly 20 Indonesian and Malaysian tugboat crew have been kidnapped by the Abu Sayyaf militants this year, with Jakarta airing fears that the problem could reach levels seen off the coast of Somalia.
Alarmed at the frequency of attacks, port authorities in some areas of Indonesia, particularly Kalimantan on the island of Borneo, have stopped issuing permits to ships taking coal to the southern Philippines.
Indonesia is the world’s largest thermal coal exporter and supplies 70 percent of the Philippines’ coal imports.

Palm oil makes its way from the rainforests of Indonesia and Malaysia (and increasingly Africa and Latin America) into 50% of what we buy, from toothpaste to margarine. Linked to deforestation, habitat loss, fires and the displacement of communities, the production of palm oil has raised major concerns to date.
The palm oil industry is also a huge user of migrant labour, which bring problems of exploitation and discrimination. Here’s what we learned in a recent expert live chat on palm oil and migration.
#MH370: Two aircraft pieces found in South Africa and Rodrigues Island are ‘almost certainly’ from lost plane | National Post
▻http://news.nationalpost.com/news/world/malaysia-flight-370-two-aircraft-pieces-found-in-south-africa-and
Malaysia’s government said Thursday that two more pieces of debris, discovered in South Africa and Rodrigues Island off Mauritius, are “almost certainly” from Flight 370, bringing the total number of pieces believed to have come from the missing Malaysian jet to five.
[…]
Though the discovery of the debris has bolstered authorities’ assertion that the plane went down somewhere in the Indian Ocean, none of the parts thus far has yielded any clues into exactly where and why the aircraft crashed. Those elusive answers lie with the flight data recorders, or black boxes, which may never be found, said Geoff Dell, a specialist in accident investigation at Central Queensland University in Australia.
“It shows they’re looking in the right ocean — that’s about it,” Dell said.
The two newly identified pieces of debris were found in March. Malaysian Transport Minister Liow Tiong Lai said one is an engine cowling piece with a partial Rolls-Royce logo, and the other is an interior panel piece from an aircraft cabin — the first interior part found from the missing plane.

As many as 21 countries, including six in the African region and four of India’s neighbours - Bhutan, China, Nepal and Malaysia, could be free of malaria by 2020, the World Health Organisation (WHO) has estimated in a report published today to mark World Malaria Day. One of the goals of WHO’s 2016-2030 programme against malaria is to eliminate the disease in at least 10 countries by 2020. To meet this target, a country must achieve at least one year of zero indigenous cases by 2020.

More than $1bn deposited in Malaysian prime minister’s account – report | World news | The Guardian
▻http://www.theguardian.com/world/2016/mar/01/more-than-1bn-deposited-malaysian-prime-minister-account-najib-razak
Deposits into Malaysian prime minister Najib Razak’s bank accounts ran to hundreds of millions of dollars more than previously identified by probes into state fund 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB), the Wall Street Journal has reported.
Citing two unnamed people familiar with flows into Najib’s accounts and a person familiar with one overseas investigation, the report said more than $1bn was deposited from 2011 to 2013, far more than the $681m earlier identified.
The paper said global investigators believe much of the $1bn originated with the state fund, known as 1MDB, but did not specify where the extra money came from or what happened to it.
The report contradicts a conclusion reached recently by Malaysia’s chief law officer.
Attorney general Mohamed Apandi Ali cleared Najib in January of any corruption or criminal offences, saying the $681m transferred into Najib’s account was a gift from a member of Saudi Arabia’s royal family and that most of it was returned.

The attorney-general’s office said the $681m (£479m) that Mr Najib received in his bank account was a personal donation from the Saudi royal family.
Critics had alleged the money came from state-owned investment fund 1MDB.
Mr Najib has consistently denied these accusations, but has faced pressure to resign over them.
Anti-corruption officials have previously said he received money as a gift from a foreign funder.
Attorney-General Mohamed Apandi Ali said in a press statement on Tuesday that the amount was a “personal donation” from the royal family in Saudi Arabia, transferred between the end of March and early April 2013.
He added that anti-corruption officials had met witnesses including the person they identified as the donor to confirm it.
“I am satisfied that there is no evidence to show that the donation was a form of gratification given corruptly,” he said, adding that evidence did not show the donation was used as an “inducement or reward” for Mr Najib to do anything in his capacity as prime minister.

US uses ASEAN summit to escalate confrontation with Beijing
By Mike Head
6 August 2015
The US administration and its allies are ramping up their threats against China, using the annual foreign ministers’ summit of the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) this week in Malaysia to accuse Beijing of “militarising” the South China Sea.
These allegations have intensified the tensions over these strategic waters that contain some of the world’s most heavily used shipping routes, raising the danger of triggering a US-China war, whether by deliberate provocation or miscalculation.

Saudi Arabia on Tuesday announced the formation of a 34-state Islamic military coalition to combat terrorism, according to a joint statement published on state news agency SPA.
“The countries here mentioned have decided on the formation of a military alliance led by Saudi Arabia to fight terrorism, with a joint operations centre based in Riyadh to coordinate and support military operations,” the statement said.
A long list of Arab countries such as Egypt, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, together with Islamic countries Turkey, Malaysia, Pakistan and Gulf Arab and African states were mentioned.
The announcement cited “a duty to protect the Islamic nation from the evils of all terrorist groups and organizations whatever their sect and name which wreak death and corruption on earth and aim to terrorise the innocent.”
Shi’ite Muslim Iran, Sunni Saudi Arabia’s arch rival for influence in the Arab world, was absent from the states named as participants, as proxy conflicts between the two regional powers rage from Syria to Yemen.

Asked if the new alliance would focus just on Islamic State, bin Salman said it would confront not only that group but “any terrorist organisation that appears in front of us.”

US President Barack Obama Calls On Russia To Change Its Approach To Syria To Defeat ISIS
▻http://www.ibtimes.com/us-president-barack-obama-calls-russia-change-its-approach-syria-defeat-isi
U.S. President Barack Obama Sunday urged Russia to rethink its approach to Syria to focus on the Islamic State group. Obama told a news conference before heading home from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations summit in Malaysia he thinks Russian President Vladimir Putin is realizing ISIS, also known as ISIL, “poses a greater threat to them than anything else in the region.”
“The question at this point is whether they can make the strategic adjustment that allows them to be effective partners with us and the other 65 countries who are already part of the counter-ISIL campaign. And we don’t know that yet,” Obama said.
UPDATED 1:20 p.m. EST: The Russian government issued a statement Sunday, rejecting U.S. President Barack Obama’s remarks and calling U.S. policy “irresponsible.” Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev blamed the United States for the creation and growth of the Islamic state.
“The Islamic State has become more entrenched, in part due to the irresponsible policy of the U.S. Rather than cooperating on the fight against terrorism, America and its allies began fighting the legitimately elected president of Syria, Bashar Assad. The reasonable policy in the Middle East, whether it is Syria, Egypt or Iraq, should consist in supporting the legitimate authorities which can ensure the integrity of the nation rather than continue to destabilize the situation. The misguided examples are clear: At some point the U.S. assisted in the strengthening of al Qaeda which led to the 9/11 tragedy. These lessons support the notion that the terrorist threat can only be combated together without separating the allies into supporters and outsiders.”

Possible BUK missile parts found at MH17 crash site - CBS News
▻http://www.cbsnews.com/news/possible-buk-missile-parts-found-at-malaysia-airlines-flight-17-ukraine-cra
Dutch prosecutors have said for the first time that they have found possible parts of a BUK missile system at the site in eastern Ukraine where Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 was brought down last year, killing all 298 people on board.
In a joint statement with the Dutch Safety Board (DSB) on Tuesday, prosecutors said the parts “are of particular interest to the criminal investigation as they can possibly provide more information about who was involved in the crash of MH17.”
They are examining several parts of the possible BUK missile system that could be linked to the downing of the plane, and they will enlist the help of international experts to establish if there is a connection.
Prosecutors have previously said they are treating a missile strike as the most likely scenario for the downing of Flight MH17, which crashed over territory held by pro-Russian rebels in July 2014 while en route from Amsterdam to Malaysia, but Tuesday’s announcement was the first time they had described possible physical evidence of a missile.
However, they cautioned that the conclusion cannot yet be drawn “that there is a causal connection between the discovered parts and the crash of flight MH17,” the statement said.

Inside the #Bangladesh brothels where Rohingya girls are suffering
One of the brothels we visited was run by a Rohingya woman who married a Bangladeshi man. The huts made of bamboo and plastic sheets had four sex workers inside per day, serving both Bangladeshi and Rohingya men. I met with a girl whose name I can not mention for security reasons; I’ll call her Sumaiya to protect her identity.
Sumaiya told me she got into sex work out of desperation after her abusive husband left her. She said she does sex work to survive. “The food handout is not enough, when my kids cry for rice where will I get it from? I’m only doing this to support my family. I feel bad doing it but I have to survive somehow.” She sees two men per day for 20 minutes who give her $2-6. She usually sees Rohingya men as clients, but on occasion Bangladeshi men appear. Those men raised her suspicion, as she has seen Rohingya girls being trafficked from the camps into the main city center.

The problem for Obama is that, while he wants this deal to get done, he also wants to hand the keys to the White house over to another Democrat in 2017. Not forcing them to take a position on a controversial issue in the midst of primaries could be helpful in that regard.
According to Jeffrey A. Bader and David Dollar, both senior fellows at the Brookings Institution’s John L. Thornton China Center, that means the closer the finalization of the trade deal inches toward the beginning of next year’s primary season, the dicier things get.

The Netherlands, Malaysia and three other countries want a UN tribunal to be set up to try those responsible for the downing of the Malaysia Airlines flight over Ukraine last year, a senior diplomat said Wednesday.
Malaysia is expected to present a draft resolution to the Security Council next month on setting up the tribunal, said the diplomat, who asked not to be named.
“They are looking for agreement to establish a UN tribunal that would be the way to hold accountable,” he said.
[…]
The five countries of the Joint Investigation Team — Australia, Belgium, Malaysia, the Netherlands and Ukraine — met last week in New York to discuss the proposed international court.
The diplomat said the countries were mindful of the need to “avoid a Russian veto” and that careful negotiations would be required on the wording of the resolution setting up the court.
Malaysia is hoping that the council will adopt the measure on July 22 to mark the one-year anniversary of the first resolution passed just days after the tragedy.
There is also concern that the resolution should be adopted before the criminal investigation is completed in the coming months, the diplomat said.
