Sunday, 25 February 2018:
In the evening hours, Israeli naval forces killed a Palestinian fisherman after opening fire at a fishing boat sailing in Gaza Sea. The shooting led to wounding 2 fishermen, who were arrested, and damaging the fishing boat. Mahmoud ‘Adel Abu Riyalah (19), from Gaza City, who was wounded in this attack said to PCHR’s fieldworker that, at approximately 15:30, Israeli gunboats chased a Palestinian fishing boat manned by Isma’il Saleh Abu Riyalah (18) and ‘Ahed Hasan Abu Riyalah (24). The fishing boat was sailing within 3 nautical miles off Gaza City shore when the Israeli naval forces heavily opened fire at it. As a result, Isma’il Saleh Abu Riyalah was hit with a live bullet to the head and then succumbed to his wounds, while Mahmoud Abu Riyalah was hit with a rubber bullet to the leg. Additionally, ‘Ahed Hasan Abu ‘Ali was hit with a rubber bullet to the leg and the fishing boat manned by all of them sustained damage. Mahmoud Abu Riyalah added that the Israeli naval soldiers forced them to take off their clothes, jumped into the water and swim towards the Israeli gunboat. They also arrested and questioned him and ‘Ahed Abu Riyalah, but released them at approximately 20:00 on the same day.

Church of Holy Sepulchre crisis: Israel burns its bridges with the Christian world

Decision makers have continually ignored the political, religious and diplomatic sensitivities when trying to solve problems that concern Jerusalem’s Christian community

The Church of the Holy Sepulchre in the Old City of Jerusalem is a place that runs to the beat of the Middle Ages and according to an uncompromising series of rules set in the mid-19th century. One of the unwritten traditions is a continual dispute between the three churches that run it: Catholic, Greek Orthodox and Armenian.

Knowing all this, the incident that occurred on Sunday was a historic event. The heads of three communities, the Greek Orthodox patriarch, the Armenian patriarch and the Catholic custodian of the Holy Land, met at the entrance to the church. They cleared the place of tourists and had the heavy doors shut. Large signs, printed up ahead of time, were hung outside with images of the church’s two enemies: Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat and Knesset member Rachel Azaria of Kulanu. At the top was written, “Enough is Enough.”
The protest came in response to two recent major steps. One was Barkat’s decision to end the municipal tax exemption for church-owned properties in Jerusalem and to put liens on the churches’ bank accounts for the tax debts. The second was a bill sponsored by Azaria that would allow the expropriation of lands sold by churches to private buyers. It was on Sunday’s agenda for a Knesset committee that decides whether or not the governing coalition will support legislation.

The churches’ action on Sunday shows that they are in an impossible situation, with pressure from all sides: Israel, their Palestinian faithful, church institutions, pilgrims and their sponsor countries (Jordan, Greece, Armenia and the Vatican). Decision makers continually ignore the political, religious and diplomatic sensitivities when they try to solve problems that concern the churches.

According to the churches, the agreement that had allowed the churches not to pay municipal taxes existed since Ottoman times, and British, Jordanian and Israeli governments have all honored it. They say the move to collect the taxes is part of Barkat’s fight against the national government and Finance Minister Moshe Kahlon over the city’s budget. Meanwhile, the mayor maintains that the agreement on taxes only applies to houses of worship and not commercial properties owned by the churches.

Between the taxes and the legislation put forward by Azaria, it’s the latter that has church leaders worried the most. According to the proposed law, the government would be able to expropriate land that had been church-owned and was sold to private real estate companies. The law discriminates against the churches compared to other institutions or private citizens. (A relevant question is what Israel would say if such a move was taken in another country for synagogue-owned property.) Furthermore, it would be applied retroactively.
The law would force the churches to pay for the failures of the Jewish National Fund and the Israel Lands Administration. To understand their missteps, one must look no further than the land deal in Jerusalem’s Rehavia neighborhood, which was developed in the first half of the 20th century. At the time, churches leased lands in Rehavia and other neighborhoods to the JNF for 99 years.

In the Rehavia sale, which is rocking the lives of 1,300 families, a private company bought the lease rights to 500 dunams (125 acres) of land in the heart of Jerusalem for 200 years for only 78 million shekels ($22.3 million). If the government had acted in a smarter fashion, it could easily have bought the rights to this land for a similar amount – small change considering the size of the area and its importance. It could have made part of the money back from residents and businesses extending their leases. But those in charge didn’t act, paving the way for private developers to enter the picture.
Once the 99-year lease is over, instead of having the JNF renew it almost automatically for a symbolic fee, the land will be transferred to the private company. Residents who live in buildings affected by the sale will need negotiate with private developers over what will happen to their homes, which have already lost as much as half of their value.
If the law passes, no one will want to do business with the churches, because who wants to buy land that can be expropriated tomorrow?
Anyone dealing with this law – including those who drafted it – knows very well that it has no chance of passing at the Knesset in its present form. It violates so many constitutional principles that it is a perfect case for being annulled by the Supreme Court. The law is intended to be a threat for real estate developers and speculators, so they reach a deal with the government. But in the meantime, the question is whether this is the way Israel wants to communicate with the Christian world.

On Wednesday morning 21 February 2018, official sources in the Palestinian Ministry of Health declared that Ahmed Abu Helou (19) succumbed to his wounds after being hit with a bullet to the head during a protest organized east of al-Bureij in the central Gaza Strip on 16 February 2018 and described his wounds as serious.

Mohammed Malik is born in Norway and originally has Pakistani parents. "My name was obviously the reason I was taken aside in passport control. But they deported me because I am a unionist. I was thrown out because I am affiliated with the LO, says Mohammed Malik. The experience at the airport was humiliating.

The LO Congress last year agreed with a large majority that LO should work for international economic, cultural and academic boycott of Israel. The Israeli Embassy in Oslo says it is not familiar with the deportation of Malik before FriFagbevegelse contacted it today. The Embassy now investigates why Israel deported Malik. According to the embassy it may take many weeks to get any answers.

FriFagbevegelse asked whether unionists in Norway’s LO are a danger to Israel’s security. "LO decided to boycott the only Jewish state in the world. One might assume that such an extreme decision can have consequences when it comes to prominent members of the LO, "Ambassador Raphael Schutz writes in a reply on e-mail to FriFagbevegelse.

In the end, they gave him a document from the Israeli Ministry of Internal Affairs, which states “a decision to prohibit entry is described in “the entry into Israeli Act”.

“They took pictures of me, gave me the entry ban and said that “you are forever refused to enter Israel,” says Malik. “The reason the entry in the entry ban was “to prevent illegal immigration.” - I asked them why they deported me. Two Gaza Youth Killed by Israeli Airstrikes– IMEMC News

Two Palestinian youth, both aged 17, were killed by Israeli airstrikes in the city of Rafah, in the south of the Gaza Strip.

According to the Palestinian Ministry of Health in Gaza, the two Palestinians, identified as Salim Sabbah and Abdullah abu-Sheikha , arrived to the hospital in serious condition.

Both of the young teens received life-saving treatment, but neither of them survived, the ministry said in a statement, according to Days of Palestine.

The two civilians, local sources said, were part of a group of six teens affected by an Israeli airstrike in an empty area in the city of Rafah.

In the statement, the ministry said that the other four were lightly wounded.

On Saturday, an explosive device detonated in an Israeli military jeep after crossing the Gaza borders in the southern Gaza city of Khan Younis, where four Israeli soldiers were wounded, including two who sustained serious injuries.

Several Israeli officials, including PM Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman vowed to take revenge for them.

Therefore, the Israeli occupation army launched about 20 airstrikes in different areas, including police and border guard stations across the Gaza Strip, claiming they attacked “terror posts.”

They noted that Tamimi was arrested in the middle of the night by well-armed soldiers, and then questioned by Israeli security officials without a lawyer or family members present. “This violates the fundamental legal guarantee to have access to counsel during interrogation,” said José Guevara, Chair of the Working Group on Arbitrary Detention.

The experts also expressed concern about her place of detention - Hasharon prison in Israel - in violation of the Fourth Geneva Convention which states that the deportation of protected persons from occupied territory to the territory of the occupying power, or to that of any other country, is prohibited, regardless of the motive.

“Sadly, this is not an isolated case,” said Lynk. “Figures from Palestine show that Israel detains and prosecutes between 500 to 700 Palestinian children in military courts annually.

“We have received reports that these children are commonly mistreated while in detention, subjected to both physical and psychological abuse , deprived of access to lawyers or family members during interrogation, and tried under a military court system in which there are significant concerns regarding independence and impartiality, and which has a worryingly high conviction rate.” In this respect, the experts referred to various opinions on Israel adopted by the Working Group on Arbitrary Detention which have emphasized the right of children to be tried by a juvenile justice system rather than before military tribunals, in accordance with relevant international human rights law.

MADA reports 117 Israeli violations of Palestinian media freedoms since December

RAMALLAH (Ma’an) — The Palestinian Center for Development and Media Freedoms (MADA) released a report on Saturday saying that between December 2017 and the end of January 2018, the group recorded 117 violations against Palestinian media freedoms at the hands of Israeli forces.

MADA reported that there was a decrease in violations against media freedoms was recorded in January compared to December 2017, during which 89 violations by Israeli forces were reported against journalists (84 of which were assaults) during their coverage of protests against US President Donald Trump’s recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.

In January, MADA recorded a total of 31 violations against media freedoms in Palestine, mostly by Israel, as 28 violations were committed by Israeli forces while three violations were committed by Palestinian forces.

Despite recording a decrease between December 2017 and January 2018, MADA said that violations for January were high compared to January 2017.

As a scholar-activist working on issues such as sexual assault, Palestine, and anti-fascism, I am used to receiving abusive messages and being publicly maligned. Now, however, attacks on me have reached troubling new heights.

Last month, the Stanford Review, a rightwing publication co-founded by Peter Thiel and based on my university campus, wrote that I have helped set up an “organization [that is] undeniably a chapter of a terrorist group” and demanded my resignation. Their article was picked up by groups like JihadWatch, Campus Fix, Campus Reform, Fox & Friends, and other rightwing media outlets.

The organization I belong to is called the Campus Antifascist Network. We advocate for organized resistance to fascist violence on campus, and for educating our communities and others as to the nature of fascism today. We claim solidarity with a proud tradition of anti-fascism dating back to the early 20th century.

Today, we are seeing the resurgence of a wretched phenomenon we thought we had put behind us – McCarthyism, which involves “the use of tactics involving personal attacks on individuals by means of widely publicized indiscriminate allegations especially on the basis of unsubstantiated charges”.

Professors are more than hesitant about fighting back against accusations that emanate from organizations supported by the likes of Peter Thiel or Charlie Kirk, who founded Turning Point USA.

I don’t have the resources to bring a libel suit – I cannot out-lawyer a newspaper that has an ally in its founder and major contributor to the university, Peter Thiel.

The troubling question is: who does?

On the eve of the first day of the Armed Forces’ new major counter-terrorism operation in Sinai, authorities have restricted access to and movement within North Sinai, while residents of the peninsula’s main cities steel themselves for the new military campaign.

According to residents, authorities prohibited entry to and exit from Sinai starting Thursday night by preventing traffic coming through the Suez Canal and the Ahmed Hamdi tunnel. On Friday morning, authorities also blocked the main road linking North Sinai’s cities to one another, and cut off passage to and from the cities of Arish, Sheikh Zuwayed and Rafah.

Despite a sense of anxiety following the Armed Forces’ statement on Friday — in which the military announced the launch of a major operation aiming to “end terrorism” in the peninsula — the day progressed quietly in Rafah, Arish and Sheikh Zuwayed, save for sounds of explosions coming from desert areas south of each city and military aircraft flying over them during the early hours of Friday.

The military spokesperson had stated on Friday that the operation started with the bombing of militant ammunition storehouses in north and central Sinai.

Residents said that the shelling targeted locations close to Egypt’s border with Palestine. A local on the Palestinian side of the border city of Rafah told Mada Masr that the explosions could be heard clearly in the city and residents saw smoke close to the borders from 7 am to 8 am.

It was the hunt for the elusive purple carrot that started it all.

A much-missed taste of home during a spell abroad, the powerful sensory memory led Vivien Sansour, founder of the Palestine Heirloom Seed Library, on a quest to rediscover the local variety during one visit home to the West Bank.

Farmer after farmer was interrogated, false leads led to dead ends, and it seemed a distinct flavour of Palestine might have slipped quietly, devastatingly, into extinction - until a chance encounter at a market stall.

“I asked this farmer,” Sansour recounts, “if he had purple carrots, and he said ’not really…’. But then he lifted part of a tablecloth, and there was a box of purple carrots. It felt like we were doing a drug deal! He said ’I can’t give it to you, somebody has ordered it.’ So I said: ’Give me at least a couple.’ I went home, put them in the ground, and later we collected the seed.”

Near-extinction was, Sansour found, a threat also facing a huge range of other local vegetables - unique varieties bred by Palestinian farmers over thousands of years for their ability to thrive in the their particular geologies and climate.

As her personal collection of seeds grew, her Facebook posts brought passionate responses. “What was just a few jars became a bigger conversation, and when people would call me wanting seeds I thought, ’why don’t we have a national seed library?’”

1 Palestinian killed, dozens more injured with live ammunition during Israeli raid in Nablus

NABLUS (Ma’an) — A young Palestinian man died on Tuesday night after succumbing to wounds he sustained earlier in the afternoon during clashes with Israeli forces in the al-Jabal a-Shamali area of Nablus City in the northern occupied West Bank.

Head of the Al-Najah Governmental Hospital in Nablus told Ma’an that Khaled Walid Tayeh , 22, from Iraq al-Tayeh village near Nablus, died of a critical gunshot wound to the chest.

Israeli forces had raided the al-Jabal al-Shamali as part of their manhunt for the Palestinian teen suspected of stabbing and killing an Israeli settler on Monday.

Locals told Ma’an that forces surrounded a building in search of the suspect, 19-year-old Abd al-Karim Adel Assi, a Palestinian citizen of Israel. Israeli forces surrounded two houses in the area, one of the suspect’s family and another home allegedly belonging to Assi’s friends.

During the raid, clashes erupted between Palestinian youth in the area and Israeli forces, who heavily fired live ammunition, rubber-coated steel bullets and tear gas at youth.

The Palestinian Red Crescent said that 110 injuries were reported during the raid: 32 of them with live bullets, 26 with rubber-coated steel bullets, 51 with severe tear gas inhalation, and one youth who was run over by an Israeli military jeep.

HEBRON (Ma’an) — A Palestinian teenager was shot dead by an Israeli security guard on Wednesday following an alleged stabbing attack in an illegal settlement north of Hebron.

Palestinian officials identified the slain Palestinian as Hamzeh Youssif Zamaareh , 19, from the town of Halhoul north of Hebron.

The Israeli army said in a statement that a Palestinian stabbed an Israeli security guard in the Karmei Tzur settlement near Halhoul before another guard shot him dead.

The injured guard was taken to hospital and was reported as only being lightly injured.

Official Palestinian Authority (PA)-owned Wafa news agency reported that Israeli forces raided the Zamaareh family home following the incident, causing clashes to erupt with residents in the area. No injuries were reported.

On Tuesday the 19th of December 2017, 17 year old Ahed Tamimi was arrested from her family home in Nabi Saleh by the Israeli army under the cover of darkness. Ahed is one of over 300 Palestinian children in Israeli military detention. Her mother, Nariman Tamimi was arrested later on the same day when she went to inquire about her daughter. On Thursday the 11th of January 2018, Mohammad Tamimi, Ahed’s cousin, was arrested from his home in Nabi Saleh. 11 days later, his brother Osama was also arrested on his way home from work. All of them remain incarcerated and have been subjected to sleep deprivation, emotional abuse and inhumane interrogation.

The Tamimi family and the village of Nabi Saleh are targets of a political campaign that aims to crush their resistance to the Israeli settler colonial regime. The Free the Tamimis Campaign calls on Palestine’s allies, comrades and supporters around the world to take action and demand the release of Ahed, Nariman, Mohammad and Osama, as well as all Palestinian prisoners.

United states: Pro-Israel Democrats are in denial of Pew poll showing favorability tanking

Last week Pew released a bombshell survey showing that the progressive base of the Democratic Party is now far more sympathetic to Palestine than Israel. “[N]early twice as many liberal Democrats say they sympathize more with the Palestinians than with Israel (35% vs. 19%).”

That finding is now getting pushback from Democrats who support the strong Israel-U.S. relationship. They worry that the issue is becoming politicized: that the Republican Party is becoming the address for Israel support, so before long Democratic candidates for office will distance themselves from Israel. And Israel will be under real pressure to change its Jim Crow foundations.

The Jewish Democratic Council of America said the poll is faulty.

Finally, a poll released by Pew did a faulty job of measuring American support for Israel, especially within the Democratic Party. While Democrats and Republicans generally disagree on certain Israeli policies, such as Israel’s settlement movement and the Kotel agreement, overall support for Israel remains strong. Just as Americans can question and criticize the Trump administration while still loving their country and remaining patriots, so too can Americans criticize Israeli policies and its leaders.

This is not very convincing: The Council links a study done 14 months ago by Shibley Telhami showing that 60 percent of Democrats support imposing sanctions on Israel over settlements, and 55 percent of Democrats regard Israel as a burden on U.S. foreign policy. It’s only gotten worse since.

Writing “How Not to Measure Americans’ Support for Israel” at the Atlantic, establishment Israel advocates Tamara Cofman Wittes and Daniel Shapiro can only offer a semantical argument against the poll: Pew misframed the question so that the surveyed conflate “Israel” with the “the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.” And nobody likes the conflict– so Israel suffers.

Israeli soldiers killed, Saturday, one Palestinian, injured at least eight others, and abducted four, in addition to demolishing a room and a barn, during a massive invasion into Burqin town, west of the northern West Bank city of Jenin.

The Palestinian Health Ministry has confirmed that, on Saturday evening, the soldiers shot Ahmad Samir Abu ‘Obeid , 19, with a live round in his head, in Wadi Burqin, west of Jenin city.

The young man suffered a very serious injury, before medics rushed him to Jenin Governmental Hospital, where he died from his wounds.

The Ministry added that the soldiers also shot two young Palestinian men with live rounds in their legs, and six others with rubber-coated steel bullets, in addition to causing dozens to suffer the severe effects of teargas inhalation, after the army attacked locals, who protested the invasion.

The army also abducted four young Palestinian men, and demolished a room and a barn, in addition to causing damage to several structures and cars, before withdrawing from the town.

The WAFA Palestinian News Agency reported that the invasion was carried out by twenty-two armored military vehicles, and two bulldozers, and added that the soldiers invaded and ransacked many homes, and used K9 units in searching the properties, causing anxiety attacks among many Palestinians, especially children.

After the army withdrew from the town, hundreds of Palestinians marched in Ahmad’s funeral procession, while chanting against the ongoing Israeli military occupation and escalation and for ongoing struggle until liberation and independence.

The Ramallah-based Palestinian Authority (PA) has just bought a private jet for Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, Israeli media reported on Thursday.

“The PA has purchased a luxurious $50-million private jet to be used by Abbas,” Israel’s Channel 12 reported.

According to the broadcaster, the aircraft — set to be delivered “within weeks” — will be stationed in the Jordanian capital, Amman, for the Palestinian president’s personal use.

Funding for the plane was reportedly provided by the PA ($20 million) and the Palestinian National Fund ($30 million).
