Let’s get started:There’s a huge learning curve for any experienced developer looking to break into the world of decentralized applications (dapps) for the first time.Building with blockchains is hard — from deciding which platform to build on top of to learning the intricacies of each smart contracting protocol… There is a lot of ground to cover for new developers. And even after learning the ins and outs of core Ethereum tools — solidity, truffle, infura — you still have to solve for usability hurdles.Luckily, there are a number of tools that have been shipped over the last couple of months to take on some of these challenges for you. We’ve compiled this list to help you understand which projects are solving different web 3 UX challenges.Hopefully this will give you a better picture of usability in (...)

Looking at our centralized cousins to improve #blockchain games. With the beginning of the Lunar New Year, we thought it would be a good idea to share a few ideas and suggestions for everyone in the community to keep in mind and discuss, whether you are a developer, investor, or merely an interested blockchain user. We will present examples of troubles faced by mainstream games and share what we think #dapps should either avoid repeating or seek to improve in order to make decentralized technology more appealing to the mass-gaming market. This is by no means a perfect guide to dapp success or a criticism of the current dapp market; it is merely a presentation of events with our generic interpretation. Like any new technology, #blockchain has had its fair share of growing pains. Around the world, this new market has suffered setbacks, many of its own making. From regulatory instability, to investors shorting the market, to dropping token values, all the way to poor technology performance, many of these pains are self-inflicted. What many fail to see — or hear — is that the biggest hurdle facing our industry is a communication issue. As the saying goes, “You can lead a horse to water, but you can’t force it to drink.”Decentralized applications (DApps) have been regarded as one of the biggest potential uses of blockchain technology as they open a whole new world of consumer and business focused products that utilize smart contracts to create new functionality never seen before.Towards the end of (...)

As an experienced crypto wallet developer, we offer a white label wallet solution for different #blockchain projects. Many companies that have their own token or decentralized app have reached out to us with the request to create an in-app wallet for them recently.Even more companies that we know — our partners/friends/people we drink beer with at conferences — complain that “building your own ETH wallet is a drag”, especially when the services you provide are not related to wallets/payments at all. Of course, we could take is as a challenge — build a WL wallet for all needs. Much has been said about the state of decentralised applications (dApps) recently. Most has been negative, stating that #dapps have, in general, not lived up to the promises from the halcyon visions outlaid in ICO whitepapers. Have these commentators been too quick to judge? Or, are they right and dApps are but a fickle endeavour? Well the truth, as usual, probably rests somewhere between both camps. Perhaps, at this point in time, we should remember the old adage that Constantinople wasn’t build in a day…It took AirBnb almost four years to crack 1m users, Uber similar and the digital freelancing platform UpWork took nearly twenty years, three mergers and tens of millions of dollars to get where it is today. Most of these dApps have only been around for less than a year. Also, although a (...)

sourceJust as user-friendly software was necessary before computers became adopted for mainstream use, dApps (more specifically, real-time dApps) are the software that run on the #blockchain and will help launch it into mainstream use. Remember, there were computers being used before Windows and a a graphical user interface were around, but it was far more difficult and the number of folks using those computers were far lower. The blockchain and distributed ledger technologies (DLT) are currently in their infancy and they don’t have super user-friendly software yet to help the general public interact with them. But taking into account that a reported 84% of companies are looking into the blockchain, if you’re a programmer then real-time dApps are probably where your career is heading. (...)

Blockchain — the Train AnalogyThe smoke is Proof of WorkFor some time, I have been tinkering with definitions of technical concepts to understand them personally to explore ways in which I can expand their use cases and applications. I believe that the key to mastering a technical concept is to having a somewhat localised version, a close to home definition. For that, stories often come in handy in breaking down technical concepts. What is a blockchain? Here’s Wikipedia’s definition.A blockchain, originally block chain, is a growing list of records, called blocks, which are linked using cryptography.[1][6] Each block contains a cryptographic hash of the previous block,[6] a timestamp, and transaction data (generally represented as a merkle tree root hash).Well, what’s then the parallel (...)

The Three Barriers to Mainstream #blockchain Adoption We Need to Be Talking About Now

With growing attention on blockchain technology, more people are developing opinions about what the future of the technology will really look like. Skeptics often cite a few core barriers to blockchain adoption. For example, you can pretty regularly find issues and theories around blockchain energy, regulation, and scaling in the headlines. But these barriers are actually common problems to new technology. And while there’s no guarantee that these challenges will resolve themselves, I think solutions will be found. I’ve seen how the blockchain community is eager to tackle these high-profile issues and move the technology forward.Alongside these “big” issues are others that are sometimes overlooked, at least by more mainstream media. How to reconcile #ethereum’s call for decentralization and users’ need for support services? On Ethereum, private keys are used to access accounts, sign messages etc. Once you lose access to your private key, you lose access to all funds stored with that account. How is that different from losing a credit card pin code? It is you can’t ask the bank to give you a new code, because the bank doesn’t exist on Ethereum. Your funds are still credited to your address on the #blockchain, but there is no way for you to withdraw them.Accounts and [DApp-] services on the Ethereum blockchain aim to be decentralized, and no one is safekeeping access codes on your behalf.A service storing your private key in its database would be able to access your funds at any moment — just like a bank — and this is (...)

When I asked the on-site local sustainability worker who the users were, she told me that some farmers who needed to use the app were “70 years old, don’t check their email and can’t use the current Excel spreadsheet system”.I was stunned. How were we supposed to build a blockchain app for a 70-year old farmer who can’t even figure out Microsoft Office?Challenges like this will only grow more common, as at least 80% of people in the world do not know what blockchain is.
