By law, all clinical trials on the European Union clinical trials register (EUCTR) must report their results, in the registry, within a year of completion. This site tracks which universities and pharmaceutical companies are doing this, and which aren’t.

GlaxoSmithKline pays $3bn for illegally marketing depression drug | The Independent
GlaxoSmithKline, the UK’s largest drug maker, tricked and bribed doctors into prescribing children with dangerous antidepressants, it was revealed last night.
The company will pay $3bn (£1.9bn) to settle a slew of charges in the US after admitting a multi-year criminal scheme to hide unhelpful scientific evidence, manipulate articles in medical journals and lavish gifts on sympathetic doctors.
The drug at the centre of the scheme, the blockbuster pill Paxil, which is branded Seroxat in Britain, has since been banned for use by children because it can make them suicidal.
What is already known?
An estimated 5 billion people do not have access to basic, safe surgical care.
The proportion of the population that can access, within 2 hours, a health facility with capacity to perform caesarean delivery, laparotomy and treatment of open fracture (the bellwether procedures) is unknown in sub-Saharan Africa.
What are the new findings?
The majority of the population in sub-Saharan Africa resided in areas within 2 hours of a major hospital that could theoretically carry out the bellwether procedures.
The estimated need for surgery in sub-Saharan Africa lies between 257.8 million and 294.7 million people.
The estimated burden in children under 15 years was 115.3 million to 131.8 million and had similar spatial distribution to the all-age pattern.
What do the new findings imply?
Sub-Saharan countries need to overcome barriers of access to safe surgery to reduce negative outcomes such as deaths.

Launch Window Diagrams - Casey Handmer
The image (raw data here) shows the delta-v required to get to any given planet, which can be translated into a total payload mass too.
I also factored the Earth to Mars launch windows by orbits that would return to Earth in the event of an aborted landing - which beats indefinite flight in space for a disappointed crew.
Newly released data shows the true extent of industrial fishing. More than 55 percent of the surface of the world’s oceans is fished, with China accounting for vastly more than any other country.
I campi fascisti

Accessibility to Cities - MAP
In the present study, we quantify and validate global accessibility to high-density urban centres at a resolution of 1×1 kilometre for 2015, as measured by travel time. The last global mapping effort to measure accessibility was for the year 2000, a time that predates both substantial investment and expansion of transportation infrastructure and an extraordinary improvement in the data quantity and quality of accessibility measures. The game-changing improvement underpinning this work is the first-ever, global-scale synthesis of two leading roads datasets – #OpenStreetMap (OSM) data and #distance-to-roads data derived from the #Google_roads database – which resulted in a nearly five-fold increase in the mapped road area relative to that used to produce the circa 2000 map. A major strength of the new roads data is its inclusion of minor roads (e.g., unpaved rural roads), which comprise a large proportion of roads in many low-resource settings and were largely absent or geographically inaccurate in previous roads databases. As such, the improvements in our accessibility map are most prominent in the areas where quality data are most needed for informing sustainable development policies and actions. To illustrate the far-reaching utility of our 2015 global accessibility map, we conduct exploratory analyses that enumerate geographic and wealth-based inequities in accessibility. We also show that shorter travel times to population centres in low- to middle-income countries is strongly associated with socioeconomic and health indicators (i.e., household wealth, educational attainment, and healthcare utilization), highlighting the vital role of accessibility in the pursuit of sustainable development worldwide. Beyond the socioeconomic and health domains, this work could be used to inform environmental and conservation efforts to balance infrastructure demands with ecosystem preservation.
À noter : “by freely distributing our data and code our design supports the construction of bespoke accessibility maps for specific policy or programmatic priorities (for example, travel time to healthcare facilities, schools, employment centres, or markets)”

#Population Estimation Service » Gridded Population of the World (GPW), v4 | SEDAC
The pes-v2 service accepts polygons that define areas of interest, and a string which selects a year from the set of 2000, 2005, 2010, 2015 or 2020 then returns population totals, land area, quality measures, and basic parametric statistics for the requested polygons based on data from SEDAC’s Gridded Population of the World version 4 (GPWv4) dataset.

New NGA global map advances R&D in geophysics and nonproliferation
A team of researchers led by scientists at the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency published a new map Sept. 1 that characterizes the Earth’s radioactivity and offers new and potential future applications for basic science research and nonproliferation efforts.
The Antineutrino Global Map 2015, or AGM2015, is an unprecedented experimentally-informed model of the Earth’s natural and manmade antineutrino flux.
The map uses open-source geophysical data sets and publicly available international antineutrino detection observational data to depict varying levels of radioactivity on Earth.
"The open access availability of these antineutrino maps represents the next generation of cartography and gives important insights into the basic understanding about the interior of our planet,” said Shawn Usman, NGA R&D scientist and lead author of the study.
The neutrino and its antimatter cousin, the antineutrino, are subatomic particles produced by stars of all types, including the Sun, as well as Earth’s atmosphere, supernovae, nuclear reactors, and radioactive materials.

The Earth2014 grids offer topography data with global coverage at 1 arc-minute (about 1.8 km) spatial resolution and may be suitable for applications such as global gravity modelling, particularly forward modelling, geo-visualisation (Fig. 1) and geophysical studies.
The High Resolution Settlement Layer (HRSL) provides estimates of human population distribution at a resolution of 1 arc-second (approximately 30m) for the year 2015. The population estimates are based on recent census data and high-resolution (0.5m) satellite imagery from DigitalGlobe. The population grids provide detailed delineation of settlements in both urban and rural areas, which is useful for many research areas—from disaster response and humanitarian planning to the development of communications infrastructure. The settlement extent data were developed by the Connectivity Lab at Facebook using computer vision techniques to classify blocks of optical satellite data as settled (containing buildings) or not. CIESIN used proportional allocation to distribute population data from subnational census data to the settlement extents. The population data have been developed for 18 countries: Algeria, Burkina Faso, Cambodia, Ghana, Haiti, Ivory Coast, Kenya, Madagascar, Malawi, Mexico, Mozambique, the Philippines, Puerto Rico, Rwanda, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Tanzania, Thailand, and Uganda. Defense Department : The War On Terror Has Cost $250 Million A Day For 16 Years
The report’s costs include only direct war-related expenses such as operating and maintaining bases, procuring equipment, and paying for and feeding troops. It most notably does not include the expense of veteran’s benefits for troops who serve in these wars or the intelligence community’s expenses related to Global War on Terror.
A 2011 paper from Harvard Kennedy School professor Linda Bilmes estimated the cost of veterans’ benefits as $600 billion to $1 trillion over the next 40 years. That number was based on 482,364 veterans who were receiving compensation for disability connected to service as of February 2011. Since then, the number of veterans receiving compensation for service-related disability has increased drastically.

The Cost of War for the U.S. Taxpayer Since 9/11 Is Actually Three Times the Pentagon’s Estimate
The Department of Defense reported earlier this year that it had spent around $1.5 trillion on conflicts, including putting troops on the ground in Iraq and Afghanistan, air raids in Syria and Iraq to battle the Islamic State militant group (ISIS) and a drone campaign and raids against extremists in Pakistan.
But that figure appears to underplay the real cost of war for the American taxpayer, at least according to the Watson Institute of International and Public Affairs at Brown University. It puts the total cost at $5.6 billion, or $23,000 per taxpayer.
