Technology products have changed the way we live, eat, interact, and commute. We shop through Amazon instead of going to physical stores. We order Uber or Lyft ride before leaving our home instead of trying our luck to get a taxi on the street. We use GrubHub to order delivery online. We make new friends through Tinder. We use Airbnb to find a place to stay when traveling. We search on Google when we have questions to ask. What changes our lives the most is the way we interact with one another. People often open their social apps like Facebook, Twitter, or WeChat first thing in the morning before getting out of beds. We often see people on their phones during social events. It is amazing to learn that more than 2.3 billions of people are using Facebook on a daily basis in 2019. Yet, (...)

Trustlines are the new IOUsThe concept of debt first appeared in ancient times in the form of barter exchange. Later, when a monetary system emerged, it became an integral part of the financial system, and new kinds of debt obligations came into existence. We can’t imagine our world without deferred payments, credits or ordinary loans. Nowadays all these ties and relationships are supported by centralized financial institutions — banks and governments. But, thanks to distributed IOU networks, things could change drastically in the near future. What is an IOU (I Owe You)?Imagine you loan $10 to a friend. Now you have your friend’s IOU on the sum. In other words, IOU, or debt obligation, is an unwritten (verbal) contract confirming that obligation. Now you can ‘spend’ a debt obligation of this (...)

In general, traditional user accounts can be substituted by public-private keys and addresses in blockchains. Traditional databases are subject to strong access control, almost all data is restricted to authenticated accounts. Moreover, account creation is also of a centralized model in traditional databases, by which a database administrator grants the user an account for access. With blockchains, conversely, key pairs are generated freely by anyone, without the need for centralized administration.? For applications that require some form of central (...)

Layer 3 development is the next step for blockchainBlockchain incompatibility has prompted the idea of “Layer 3.” Blockchain technology is one of the most over-hyped technologies in recent years. It suffers from serious teething problems, to say the least. After showing promise being able to overhaul the top-down model of relationships, implementable decentralized solutions in the real world are still a long way off. They are either not fully decentralized or poorly scalable due to low throughput and/or lack of compatibility with other blockchains. Hence, there really is no ecosystem that has adopted it en masse. With the ability to access a number of products and services instantly from any connected device, it’s no wonder it has become a mainstay of most households and businesses around the globe. Why decentralization still matters. An enhanced digital experience is largely powered by tapping into data — data that can help companies decode user preferences, shopping patterns, payment choices, and other related transactions that have simplified our lives. A major part of this was enabled by centralized services.
