Enhanced rationality in autism spectrum disorder

Challenges in social cognition and communication are core characteristics of autism spectrum disorder (ASD), but in some domains, individuals with ASD may display typical abilities and even outperform their neurotypical counterparts. These enhanced abilities are notable in the domains of reasoning, judgment and #decision-making, in which individuals with ASD often show ‘enhanced rationality’ by exhibiting more rational and bias-free decision-making than do neurotypical individuals. We review evidence for enhanced rationality in ASD, how it relates to theoretical frameworks of information processing in ASD, its implications for basic research about human irrationality, and what it may mean for the ASD community.

Keeping Self-driving Decisions Simple: Starsky #robotics’ Behavior Planning

When people ask me what I do for a living, the shortest answer I give is: I help build safe autonomous trucks. I’ve been working on the behavior planning layer of Starsky Robotics’ autonomous driving stack for the last two years. Put simply, I develop software that allows our trucks to make good decisions, and I work with the rest of the team to show that the system is doing the right thing.Starsky Robotics’ Autonomous Truck“Behavior planning” is a bit of an unusual term, even within the industry, so let me first explain what we at Starsky mean by it. The behavior planning layer is responsible for the high level decision making of the truck, which we take to be decisions that have a few seconds or more lead time, like lane changes, taking an off-ramp, or pulling over to the side of the road (...)

Decision-Making: The Most Undervalued, But Most Important, Skill in Software EngineeringChess, in general, is the process of making decisions (Photo by rawpixel)“The average person makes an eye-popping 35,000 choices per day”It may come as a surprise to many, but the most important skill in software development is not how good your coding skills are or how much you know about machine learning and data science. It’s decision-making!Decisions, DecisionsDid you know that the average person makes 35,000 decisions each day? About 227 of these are on food alone. Our rapid advancement of technology has us continuously surrounded with an overwhelming amount of information. If that’s not enough, we’re also bombarded with “smart” notifications.Software Development & DecisionsWhat does this have to (...)

On the path of #business and life, opportunities come about that can lead us in all sorts of directions. It is up to us to decide which path to take, and sometimes, you have to take risks and venture into the unknown in order to truly find the proper path for you. For example, Ashley Scorpio left an accomplished career as a political aide in Canadian Parliament to work in startups, and now she is a top executive at one. The decentralized artificial intelligence application, Effect.AI, made the decision to migrate off the NEO #blockchain and move their operations to EOS instead. Investor Geoff Lewis evaluates up and coming technology companies for his job and figures out which ones will be successful and cause the most disruption for the better. Vera Kopp already had a veteran career as (...)

    Bring Uncertainty Back

We need to bring uncertainty back to risk measurements.Suppose I ask you to measure the wingspan of a Boeing 747. Right now, wherever you may be, with the knowledge and tools you have on hand. You may say this isn’t possible, but Doug Hubbard has taught us that anything can be measured, once you understand what measurement is. With that mental hurdle out of the way, you can now measure the wingspan of a Boeing 747.There are two different approaches to this in modern business.Option 1: Think about the size of a passenger jet and say, “Big.”Technically, this answers my question. There’s a problem with this answer, however — it’s neither precise nor accurate. In everyday language, the words precise and accurate are used interchangeably. In areas of science where measurements are frequently used, (...)

My dad gave my new son a book of fun pen/marker doodles. I’m using them in posts. As a product manager, it is your responsibility to make sure that the best possible decisions get made…not to necessarily make those decisions.Sometimes you’ll have the best idea, especially when it comes to areas requiring deep domain knowledge. Most of the time, you won’t, nor will you necessarily be the best arbiter/judge of ideas. To elicit better ideas — to make better decisions — the talented people on the team (you included) will need context, data, space, opportunities to iterate on and improve ideas, tactics for reducing cognitive bias, and access to facilitation/decision-making frameworks. You may even be called on to break a tie occasionally, though it is better to establish an open-to-all framework that (...)

I thought I’d share chapter one of my soon to be released book, The Decision Checklist: A Practical Guide to Avoiding Problems.“Formal education will make you a living. Self-education will make you a fortune.”  — Jim RohnWe probably make hundreds, if not thousands, of little decisions every day. We make decisions about what to wear in the morning, when to brush our teeth, what to eat for breakfast, whether we’re going to order a grande mocha or a tall soy latte at the Starbucks drive thru, where to park our car, whether or not we’re going to stop and chat with a co-worker in the office. And that’s all before we even sit down at our desk! If you’re a business leader, knowledge worker, or entrepreneur, then #decision-making is a major part of your job. What goes through your mind when the #startup you work for runs out of money? My eyes are looking over a spreadsheet of names and numbers representing our employees and their salaries. A big red number constantly fights for my attention:$25,000.That’s the amount we needed to reduce our monthly burn rate by. To put it in perspective, that’s 40% of our payroll expenses. At this point we’re out of options — there’s no more wiggle room anywhere else. We’ve already cut everything else we can think of including parking, food, and benefits. We’re even getting rid of our physical office (a significant reduction of $2,500 a month), opting instead to work out of coffee shops where we can.Payroll is the only variable we have left. It’s tough. Just a year ago we were riding high on our success and opportunity. We (...)

As a CEO, your biggest leverage is in decision making. In fact once you cross the early stage of a company, the two most important (and frequent) things you end up doing are — decision making and communicating. So, if the decisions you take can make or break your startup, how do you take the right decisions?Basis my learning over the last 5 years, I have realized there are 3 key attributes of decision-makingImpact — how many lives it touches, till how long will it affect, does it significantly #impact the key metrics etc.Complexity — both in terms of gathering the data you need to make that decision and once decided the effort that goes into executionReversibility — if you end up taking the wrong decision how easily can it be undone, if at all. While you are evaluating each decision against these 3 (...)
