Image courtesy: PexelsDrug addiction is a huge problem in the United States. From alcoholism to nicotine dependence to addiction to more serious #drugs like opioids, the health implications and human/financial costs are significant. According to Regis College, deaths related to heroin overdoses increased dramatically from 2010 to 2016. By 2016, synthetic opioids took center stage in overdose deaths, with heroin trailing. The opioid crisis has reached the point where now opiate overdoses are the number one cause of death in individuals under the age of 50.The healthcare costs of Illicit drugs alone exceed $11 billion annually, and overall costs including incarceration, crime, lost work, and productivity are $249 billion. Drug use is not just found in poor neighborhoods or among the (...)

Marijuana and Illegal DrugsOver 80% of employers think #marijuana contributes to poor quality job candidates, and as legalization continues on, it becomes a growing concern for business leaders everywhere. From increased operating costs, to workers compensation, to inebriated employees, a lot can go wrong in the workplace when illegal #drugs are involved.Workers who test positive for illegal drugs in their systems have on average a higher rate of both absences and terminations compared to colleagues. Business leaders who choose to drug test employees enjoy office environments with reduced insurance costs, high levels of health and safety measures, and even improved morale and communication. But not every business agrees on how effective drug testing is and some would even consider it (...)

▻http://www.berliner-woche.de/schoeneberg/soziales/die-uhr-tickt-wieder-fuer-potse-und-drugstore-d147534.html
Over a million children under the age of six are currently on psychiatric drugs in America – NaturalNews.com

... the situation only gets worse as kids get older, with 4,130,340 kids aged 6 to 12 taking some type of psychiatric drug.
True, it’s absolutely crazy. Doctors ought to be lined up and, well, have great violence done to them. No wonder the US has gone bonkers.
If you are going to smoke #cannabis, you may want to wait until the end of your #adolescence: all other factors (socio-economic, notably) being equal, neurocognitive impact of cannabis use is inversely correlated with starting age.

“The main objective of this prospective longitudinal study was to investigate bidirectional associations between adolescent cannabis use (CU) and neurocognitive performance in a community sample of 294 young men from ages 13 to 20 years. The results showed that in early adolescence, and prior to initiation to CU, poor short-term and working memory, but high verbal IQ, were associated with earlier age of onset of CU. In turn, age of CU onset and CU frequency across adolescence were associated with (a) specific neurocognitive decline in verbal IQ and executive function tasks tapping trial and error learning and reward processing by early adulthood and (b) lower rates of high-school graduation. The association between CU onset and change in neurocognitive function, however, was found to be accounted for by CU frequency. Whereas the link between CU frequency across adolescence and change in verbal IQ was explained (mediated) by high school graduation, the link between CU frequency and tasks tapping trial and error learning were independent from high school graduation, concurrent cannabis and other substance use, adolescent alcohol use, and externalizing behaviors. Findings support prevention efforts aimed at delaying onset and reducing frequency of CU”
"Drug use, they [the Nixon administration] thought, was the common denominator among the groups- low-income blacks, the counterculture & the antiwar movement - against whom #Nixon had unified “ignored America”. This is how ’War on Drugs’ started and the collateral damage is still ongoing today.

#Book: The Dark Net - Inside the Digital Underworld - Jamie Bartlett (2014)

In this book Jamie Bartlett explains why he thinks the dark net is becoming mainstream. He shows the shift towards a consumer centric attitude (customer service), where sellers build and care about reputation, customer reviews & grading. Prices go down, quality goes up. In order to appeal some even go as far as advertising “fair trade” organic cocaïne, straight from the Guatemalan farmer instead of the drug lords.
The dark net is going mainstream. #Aphex_Twin announced his last album directly on the dark net. Even #Facebook has a dark net .onion entry in order to be accessible via TOR.
Bartlett predicts that social media going to expand its foothold in the dark net.

Beyond the familiar online world that most of us inhabit—a world of Google, Facebook, and Twitter—lies a vast and often hidden network of sites, communities, and cultures where freedom is pushed to its limits, and where people can be anyone, or do anything, they want. This is the world of Bitcoin and Silk Road, of radicalism and pornography. This is the Dark Net.
In this important and revealing book, Jamie Bartlett takes us deep into the digital underworld and presents an extraordinary look at the internet we don’t know. Beginning with the rise of the internet and the conflicts and battles that defined its early years, Bartlett reports on trolls, pornographers, drug dealers, hackers, political extremists, Bitcoin programmers, and vigilantes—and puts a human face on those who have many reasons to stay anonymous.
