“Dynamicland” is composed of more modest materials. It’s neither VR, nor AR—just R. Like the early computers of the 1940s, Dynamicland is a computer the size of a room, but without the typical trappings of digital hi-tech. Post-its, magic markers, scissors, and staplers are the primary technologies programmers work with here, augmented by projections cast onto paper and tables. The room looks like a typical co-working space: bright couches, Ikea-hued tables, whiteboards. But the computer, here, is the room; its “smart” ceilings are embedded with cameras that process the visual data that constitute Dynamicland’s computer programs.

États-Unis : «le business des migrants»
La frontière entre les États-Unis et le Mexique est poreuse. Les Sud-Américains fuient les cartels, mais sont désormais attendus de pied ferme par la police américaine. Et un business s’est développé.
Dans l’Amérique de Donald Trump, c’est un nouveau western qui se joue. Thomas en est une des victimes. À sa cheville, ce Mexicain porte un bracelet électronique. « Quand les gens voient ça, ils croient que je suis un criminel. Mais je ne le suis pas. » En effet, Thomas est arrivé du Mexique il y a 26 ans, il a pénétré sur le territoire illégalement et en a payé le prix fort. « J’ai dépensé 8 000 dollars en tout, pour le téléphone, la caution, les frais de justice », confie-t-il.
Son avocat, lui, déplore la politique actuelle du gouvernement. Il dit qu’Obama mettait en prison les sans-papiers délinquants, mais pas les gens honnêtes comme Thomas. Depuis Trump, tout le monde part en prison selon, lui.
L’État soutient les centres pénitentiaires
Car en Amérique du Sud, beaucoup fuient la misère et les cartels. Aux frontières, la police attend avec un rituel bien rodé : prison, contrôle judiciaire, caution et expulsion. Les réfugiés sèment les dollars.
Et à des milliers de kilomètres de là, en Virginie, la société Libre a trouvé le filon : cibler les migrants en prison et se porter comme garant pour les faire sortir. Et une fois dehors, ces migrants portent un bracelet électronique, pour ne pas qu’ils s’enfuient. C’est donc le cas de Thomas, le Mexicain.
Le chiffre d’affaires de la société Libre s’élèverait à 30 millions de dollars.
Le business réalisé sur le dos des migrants est florissant. Deux groupes privés se partagent le marché des prisons privés : #GEO_Group et Core Civics. Plus la politique vis-à-vis des migrants clandestins est répressive, plus leurs prisons sont occupées, plus leurs bénéfices augmentent. En 2017, #GEO et #Core_Civics, toutes deux cotées en Bourse, affichent des chiffres d’affaires cumulés de quatre milliards de dollars.

RESOURCE CRISIS: How to destroy a civilization

Mathematical models may be a lot of fun, but when you use them to project the future of our civilization the results may be a bit unpleasant, to say the least. That was the destiny of the first quantitative model which examined the future of the world system; the well known “The Limits to Growth” study, sponsored by the Club of Rome in 1972. This study showed that if the world’s economy was run in a “business as usual” mode, then the only possible result was collapse.
This kind of unpleasant results is a feature of most models which attempt to foresee the long term destiny of our civilization. Not that it should be surprising considering the speed at which we are wasting our natural resources. Nevertheless, whenever these studies are discussed, they generate a lot of criticism and opposition. It is the result, mainly, of emotional reactions: there is nothing to do about that, it is the way the human mind works.
But let’s try to put aside emotions and examine a recent study by by Motessharry, Rivas and Kalnay (MRK) on the destiny of human society that became known as the “NASA funded model” after a note by Nafeez Ahmed. The model has attracted much criticism (as usual) but it is worth looking at it with some attention because it highlights some features of our world which we should try to understand if we still think we can avoid collapsing (or at least mitigate it).
The MRK model has this specific feature: it divides humankind in two categories, “commoners” and “elites”, assuming that the first category produces wealth while the second doesn’t. In some assumptions, it turns out that the elite can completely drain all the resources available and bring society to an irreversible collapse, even though the resources are renewable and can reform the initial stock.
I think this is a very fundamental point that describes events which have happened in the past. As I noted in a previous post, it may describe how the Roman Empire destroyed itself by excessive military expenses (we may be doing exactly the same). Or, it may describe the collapse of the society of Easter Island, with a lot of natural capital squandered in building useless stone statues while putting a high strain on the available resources (the story may be more complex than this, but its main elements remain the same)
So, it looks like elites (better defined as “non productive elites”) may play a fundamental role in the collapse of societies. But how exactly can this be modeled? The MRK model does that using an approach that, as I noted earlier on, is typical of system dynamics, (even though they do not use the term in their paper. Not only that, but it is clearly a model in the style of those “mind sized” models which I had proposed in a paper of mine. The idea of mind sized models is to avoid a bane of most models - of all kinds - that of “creeping overparametrization”. Since, as a modeler, you are always accused that your model is too simple, then you tend to add parameters over parameters. The result is not necessarily more realistic, but surely you add more and more uncertainty to your model. Hence, the need for “mind-sized” models (a term that I attribute to Seymour Paper)........

Pour mériter la mention de « blog » un site doit permettre l’interaction - si possible le trackback et au moins le commentaire. Un site statique est fort pratique, mais ce n’est pas un blog... A moins d’abandonner les commentaires à un service tiers et perdre ainsi son indépendance.
Mof, un blog c’est avant tout une suite d’articles réguliers, présentés du plus récent au plus vieux (= log, journal). Et c’est tout. Le fait qu’il y ait des commentaires ou pas n’a aucune incidence, un blog c’est pas forcément fait pour discuter, mais avant tout pour publier du contenu, dans un ordre daté.
Justement, je suis persuadé que l’essence même de la publication est la participation à une discussion - fut-elle sous-entendue... Même un blog purement statique, sans fonctionnalité de commentaires, participe à une discussion. Je déplore donc que le trackback ne soit pas plus pratiqué - le maillage des articles les enrichit mutuellement. De même, j’espère qu’un protocole tel que Salmon (►http://www.salmon-protocol.org) parviendra à redonner une unité aux discussions éclatées dans les réseaux décentralisés.
